So if a Falang were to marry a Thai he must submit totally to Thai customs at the expense of his own? In my country many of us find the idea of Sin Sot (Which appears to be the purchase of a wife) to be an abhorrent concept. Is it so out of line for us to expect some sort of observance of our customs when marrying? Possibly a compromise? I think I already know the answer......

So you expect your BG and her family to be conversant with western culture and traditions from what? Their education? Or their glimpses of western culture from Channel 3? I am sure that if you could speak Thai you might be able to make them understand that in the West we expect parents to be independent of their children and that their children will not be responsible for them in their old age. You could perhaps go on to explain to them why you drive a BMW but you think it is best for them if they dont even own a motorbike. One thing I will guarantee is that they are even more confused about your culture than you are about theirs. At the end of the day you should consider this. They clearly consider the sin soht very important to them. If you get away with not paying it remember that you have probably upset and hurt them and their worldview. If that is something you want to do to you parents in law that is fine but it would seem a pretty bad starting point for a marriage.

Abrak makes a good point about trying to explain to a Thai about how we do not support our parents in their old age in the West. It's a hard concept from them to understand. There is no governmental or social help for people in Thailand who do not (or cannot) work. Old age pensions from your work are also extremely rare in Thailand. Most old people in Thailand have no choice but to rely on their children to support them. It's a simple fact of life here. You marry the woman, you marry the family. We must understand this explictly before we get into a serious relationship with a Thai woman. If we are not comfortable with this, then I guess the best solution is to find a woman whose parents are already dead! Cyborg: It isn't as clear cut as submitting to Thai customs at the expense of your own. You still retain your own customs and culture when you live in Thailand (I mean, how could you not? They are a part of us). However, the customs and culture of Thailand are overwhelming when you actually live here. It takes time but eventually you change and begin to incorporate some of these ideas into your own way of doing things. You can't live in a foreign country without that country's culture rubbing off on you. So the ex-pat in Thailand finds a compromise in himself. Naturally, we will tell our Thai wives that we don't do this or that back in Farangland. Depending on the wife, they'll understand that (or not) and accomodate you (or not). Personally, I have no problem with paying Sin Soht... as long as I am paying the proper amount of money. It is important to respect the culture of the country you are living in. To not pay is a huge insult to your wife and her family. SirTitus

OK guys... What about a Thai man that marries a Falang lady? Would he likely feel the obligation to pay SS to her family? This is a serious question. Wouldnt there be the same cultural obligation?? Or would this be one of those situations where it would be decided to conform to the Falang customs.....conveniently?

My friend is "marrying" his TGF in her village, near Surin in 2 weeks. She's 22 and, as far as her father and extended family are aware, has not had bf's (Thai or farang) before. He's in his 40s, never married and not rich by any Western standards. He is living here, not a tourist. She's 22 and the only daughter. He has no problem in paying sin sod. If the "marriage" works out, then he's happy to be part of the family and he sees sin sot as no different to paying for the wedding and associated costs in the UK. His GF has been working in a go-go bar for 5 months. Her family do not know this although the village suspect it. Marrying a farang and receiving sin sot is "proof" that she is not a BG, in their eyes. My friend is not bothered about her job and is even happy for her to continue after the "marriage" as they will need the income. He trusts her and she is honest about her customers (mainly Japanese). I'm his friend - what should I advise him?

damn, why didn't I think of this before, he could afford other lady's sin sot payments with the income from wife #1, then from both #1 & #2's income, he could get a #3, build a friggin' harem why don't you ?

Great idea, Oaktoad. Imagine. This guy's friend (who likes sharing his wives with Japanese men; maybe he can work out an orgy---or like in the bukkake movies!) will slap his own forehead and say Why didn't I think of that, marvelous business acumen! Only thing is he'll have to pay all those sin sohts... But on the other hand he's saving money on barfines.
