55 C-oz,  many things about TPE may surprise you !! Was talking to an wine importer in Bangkok a while ago, told me that his most popular import from Aus. was Roxbourg chardonay [ a good drop - and not cheap] - I know as used to have my own private case kept at the "Flower Drum" in little burke in another lifetime ! -  Anyway, I complemented him and his customers on the choice - he said, oh they dont know anything - they just ask me to send them the most expensive wine i have - and that was it !   TIT.   Re wines, yes, Villa supermarket near soi 33 not bad i guess, and also Central, chidlom, quite a fair range - but nothing great.  $250 + for Hill of grace !!  Another fav was the first Vic wine in a BLUE bottle,  - came from Avoca or somewhere, a merlot from memory, was great at the time, till it became trendy -  St.Hugo's also not a bad Cab Sav .... -   So yes, whilst living in LOS great, still look forward to Cup week in Melbourne when i can make it !

tpeye,
The blue bottle - your probably referring to"Blue Pyrenees Estate", if I am not wrong. Its a Victorian wine, a blend (fine but not the best )and usually about AUS30.00.

My choices,
Henschke - a great range
Parkers Estate - First Growth
Mount Mary - another superb range
Moss Wood

Plus a few lesser known ones of great value, with great taste:
Langmeil - Freedom
Glaetzer
Howard Park
Cullen
Lakes Folly
Pipers Brook
Redbank - If you can wait the time
Yeringberg

Ahh   Blue Pryenees, that was it -   used to drink a fair bit of Jamiesons Run also, which was OK at the price - remember having a huge session with a couple of the channel 7 footy commentators one afternoon - which was brilliant as then they had to go call a night game 555

TPE and Craigoz, Ý Ah, Hill of Grace. ÝI sell wine in the US and we move it for $160 wholesale. Ýí96 vintage. ÝOuch! ÝLately, Iíve been enamored with wines from Paringa (shiraz, cab, merlot) and Yalumba (Barossa shiraz and viognier).

DF, you are probably right about the importer/distributor problem. ÝIf the distributor doesnít have it, the restaurant canít get it (easily). ÝMany times a distributor wonít carry a wine because they say there is no market for it, but there canít be a market for it if itís not available. ÝWe see this all the time and have increased our company's market share significantly by picking up ìspecial requests.î

Griffin, Another similarity btwn Thailand and the US. Ýìallthough most of them don't hav e aclue what they are buying and drinking as long as it is expensive!î ÝI canít count the number of times a day I listen to some rich a**hole tell me how s/he enjoyed her/his 2000 Bordeaux or Napa Cab the previous night. ÝSure it will be great,  . . .  in ten years. ÝName dropping in the wine business must surpass all fields. ÝItís really laughable. Ý

Rimbaud,

If you want Ouch, try "Three Rivers - Barrossa".
You guys over there in the USA have f_cked the price of it and some others like it, so I can't even afford to drink what I have in storage.

Compared to TR , HOG & MM are steals. Lets hope you leave the Henschke and Mount Mary alone for a while. I presume you mean USD 160 Ýfor HOG-96, equivalent to AUS 250. Average bottle shop price in Oz or was last time I visited.

You dont need to pay high prices for good wines, just know which ones taste good to you, not to anyone else. Each person has his own taste and the high priced value of a bottle does not necessarily mean its good - just that they didn't make a lot of it. "Supply and Demand forces in action"

Craigoz,

I couldnít agree with you moreóon all counts. ÝThe US has ruined the wine pricing structure (though letís not forget your Japanese neighbors certainly have helped). ÝThe Cali wine Indus got import duties/tariffs raised on most all import wines so they could justify raising their prices. ÝThe last six to eight years has been madness in pricing. ÝCaymus Napa going from USD 25 to 50 in one vintage (please!! 100% markup??). ÝNow that we have a huge wine glut and are enjoying our third year of recession, wine prices are dropping like crazy, except some a**holes like Caymus (Though I recently saw their national sales rep schlepping a bag of Caymus, desperately trying to get placements with their once allocated wine. ÝIt's about time those crooks started working again).Ý

ìYou dont need to pay high prices for good wines, just know which ones taste good to youî is a refrain I sing daily at waitstaff trainings, wine tastings, and wine dinners. ÝPeople are starting to relax a bit here and trust their palates more, so the message is beginning to get across. ÝHowever, marketing and advertising still rule America. ÝThatís why there are so many ninnies drinking Kendall Jackson Chard. ÝPersonally, Iíd rather suck on a wood chip.

I know of the legendary Three Rivers, but never had the luck to try it and doubt I will since there are only about 50 cases made each year. ÝGot any of the í93? ÝYou could probably take early retirement with enough of that one. ÝAnd yes, that HOG was 160 USD, but I meant wholesale, so in a wine shop: USD 240. ÝRestaurant could easily ask and get USD 320, even in this sad market. ÝOf course, if you are in Vegas or LA, that restaurant price could exceed $500.

Rimbaud,

Correct and some of those responsible for the stupidity of the price hikes also come from HongKong.

I know its a bit of the track of the thread but just a short, a true one-

I went to the Henschke cellars one year to taste/ buy some stock and asked for thee bottles of HOG. I was politly told that their was a one bottle limit, so I asked why.

1. The Staff Response (as I was told) : Several months prior a bus load of Asian (I am told from HK) tourists rolled up at the cellar door and to the surprise of the cellar staff, each wanted to buy 2 bottles of HOG. They sold between 50-60 which was of great surprise to them seeing they only sold and average of 6 per week, before they realized!!!

A staff member walked out into the carpark only to see a gentleman collecting all the bottles from the tourists (seems he had paid them each $10 to make the purchase for him, plus the cost of the bottles). He was calmly sticking them into the boot of his car. They enquired and he said he was from HK, so I am told. Apparently there was a very large premium markup between the $220 AUS cellar door price and the price in HK restaurant.

Unfortunately in Australia under law, " a Sale is a Sale if freely made" and they, the staff had no way of demanding it back.

2. My Response: Do I look Asian??????????? after a few Australian expletives giving my opinion of the HK gentlemen, just to demonstarte that I was a true Aussie?? Crude & Vulger. Also the spare tyre beer belly - wrapped in a singlet top, shorts and thonges, helped the look. "No I left the stubbie outside, as I thought it would be in bad taste if I took it into the wine tasting area Ý

3. Her (Staff Response): Ok Sir (f_ck?? she called me called Sir after that outburst) - you can have 2 Bottles and if you would like to drive out the car park and come back again you can have another one. That makes Three.

4. My Response: Thanks Love and I'll see you in 5. Two separate sales on the CC.

The rest of it you can blame on that arsehole "Robert Parker", the f_ckwitt (from the USA) who visits our wineries and rates wines like the 1996 TR with 100 points(out of 100).
No c*** can get his hands on a bottle in the local market, let alone afford to buy one after that, as it then becomes 100% auctioned or exported once he has been there.

All this is making me thirsty - tonight kick back and kill a Henschke Cyril 1990
