Quote: from cyborg on 10:11 pm on Feb. 11, 2006 OK guys... What about a Thai man that marries a Falang lady? Would he likely feel the obligation to pay SS to her family? This is a serious question. Wouldnt there be the same cultural obligation?? Or would this be one of those situations where it would be decided to conform to the Falang customs.....conveniently?
It would largely depend on where they are living, I would assume. If the farang woman's family has been in Thailand for a long time and embrace the culture as much as possible, then I'd say "yes". The Thai man would probably pay sin soht. If it was a Thai man living in America with an American woman, then he would definitely not pay sin soht as it isn't an American custom. And Slowx was right in saying that it isn't very common for a Thai man to marry a farang woman. I only know of one case and this woman is half Thai/half American. SirTitus

My advice is not to get too bent out of shape over the “sin soht” question. It is perhaps worth noting that those of us who have gone through the process are not the ones who have issues with it now – despite our feelings about it initially. As Sir Titus says - you marry the girl you marry the family. And if you take her back to farangland then its only common sense that the family are going to want to have enough money to "rescue" her and fly her home if they have to. As to what do you get for your money? Well, speaking for my own in-laws the shift was quite subtle but very definite - this girl is now my wife first and their daughter second. Or as another member once said "What do you get? You get a person." As to understanding each others culture and systems – try explaining to any Thai person that the ex-wife got the lot during the divorce settlement and that your Court and Government system supported that outcome 100%. Enjoy.

I concur 100%,, it has been a sticky point with my Thai wife that not only did I loose 70% of my property but I also have to pay AU$1,200 per month maintenance for my 2 boys.Very difficult for them to understand a government department that was set up and is essentially run by Lesbian femin-Nazist men haters. But that is the way it is here in Aus. Cheers

The USA divorce system seems similar to OZ. Most states (divorce is governed by state law in the USA) are community property states - which means the ex-wife gets 1/2 of all the community property. Plus, the guy often pays child support as well. I asked two Uni girls about sin sot. Both have western boyfriends (one US and one Canadian). They are both "good" girls, in that they know nothing about the P4P scene except that Nana and Soi Cowboy are "bad" places. Both have been to the USA. The first Uni gal (hi-so master's student in the Physical Sciences at Chulalongkorn) said that sin sot was absolutely necessary, and that it showed respect to the girl and her family. I pointed out some of the arguments in Stickman's "The Case Against Sin Soht - And Other Reasons Not To Give Thai Women Money" By Camuschula that has been referenced. She understood the gist of the article, but insisted that sin sot was mandatory. In fact, she even gave me a figure: "I like sevens." What do you mean, I asked? 7,777,777bt. A bit South of $200,000USD. She said, of course, her family would give the money back to her. I pointed out that some families keep the money. She said that she understood that, but that her family would give it to her. The second Uni girl (Senior, English Major, also Chula) also said that sin sot was mandatory. She didn't care about the amount - just so that it showed respect for her traditions and her family. Her family is quite well off (they own a house in BKK and 5 houses in their own hometown). Father is important in the local political structure. I have visited with her family both in BKK and in their hometown. Given her family's economic status, I said to her "your family will give the sin sot to you, right?" Her response was interesting: "Maybe not." She was serious. So, from my extremely small sample size, well-educated Thai girls from economically well-off Thai families still expect Sin Sot.

of course she's not interested in the amount, cause she's not the one who has to fight tooth and nail to get the damn money, silly girls and just look how well off the family is, and they still expect more, it's just plain greedy this is how these families get wealthy, taking everything they can get, and giving NOTHING back JMHO

Don't see how you think communal i.e 50% is the same as 70%. Either way,, It was a bargain to be rid of the bitch. As for sin soht I paid around 300,000 BHT with agreement 200,000 would come back. This was on top of the gold necklace ( 3 baht) and gold bracelet ( 2 bht). Best investment I ever made. My wife is university educated and NEVER a bar-girl,,from Isaan and parents very poor,,,,, Father was a Teacher but gambled away everything. So where did the returned 200,000 BHT go,,,, I built a house for him on some land I own in home town.

AHH Local,3 strikes and your out. Am I the only married man that likes a bit of variety now and then ( I doubt it). In fact numerous members of this board are married. University was in Mahasarakarm city and not super expensive ( Uncle also helped and has always treated her as his daughter also). The land IS IN FACT in their home town and yes I most certainly do own it,,, relatively simple to set up a company with me as the only director that has the authority to actually make any decisions. ( 2,400 sq metres lake-side land ). I suppose if you want to be pedantic the "comapny" actually owns it,, but as I am the only director with the power to authorise changes ( sell, build on, divide etc) then in reality yes I own it.
