Yep okay I hear ya Thug. Don't really know how they work out the rankings, but a little hard to fathom, except they try to remove the emotional feeling of who is better.
Agree about Rooney. He's done. And if England were to advance and do well, how can you take out the player who did the job and replace him with an out of shape Rooney. Doesn't make sense.

FIFA rankings are based on actual results played in actual games, so to a certain extent your rank is based on the quality of the teams you play. As the USA has most recently played in the World Cup qualifiers against the likes of Guatemala, Honduras and bloody Cuba, as well as a bunch of friendlies against other no-hopers, their ranking is artificially high.
Frankly, I'd rank them around 10-15th.
Not a bad side, but a country mile off the pace of the better teams.

FYI, FIFA World Ranking calculation per Wikipedia:

Seems to me (without doing the math) that the generous rankings of the US and Mexico are due in part to their performance at the last World Cup (Mexico had wins over Croatia and Ecuador and tied Italy, US tied Korea and beat Portugal and Mexico) and over-weighting of World Cup preliminary and continental championship matches (as Scobie mentioned).

Interestingly the Czech Republic (twice runners up but a long time back) & the Netherlands who are 2nd & 3rd in the world rankings don't get a mention in FIFA seedings top 8???
Yes, I know the Dutch normally choke but does FIFA know anything?

I believe there is some carry over from the 2002 Cup results which affects the seedings for the 2006 Cup, so Holland not being a participant in '02 has hurt them this time.
