I couldn't and wouldn't argue the point about whether the better team won or lost. I didn't watch the game.
I am merely saying, with a game of this importance, they should play until a winner is decided and not decide it in the manner in which they did.
Sudden death, sudden victory...whatever you want to call it.

I think I will have to disagree with you on this one, it is true however that the debate over the penalty shoot out is still fierce, but as we all know footy that is soccer is a low scoring game and after 120mins of play even the fittest professionals tire significantly which is highligted by the number of cramps on the pitch.
If you continue to play a sudden death scenario you reach a situation where the game if decided by mistakes through fatigue rather than superior play, defeating what should be the essence of a sporting contest, and quite possibly creating a farcical situation. If two teams play and they are evenly matched then a draw is the correct result and in a tournament format then penalties which should theoretically be a 50 / 50 situation seem a correct way to resolve the situation.
Of course american footy and basketball are quite different in that they are both much higher scoring games for a start making the likelyhood of a tied situation much less probable, and certainly for the football much less likelyhood of fatigue due to very little running ( despite each man carrying 250 kg of pillows) so some sort of shootout really is never going to be neccessary. Also penalties are at the least exciting and an excellent way to get rid of the english and their hooligan fans.
As for cricket, well if it lasted any less than 5 days how would any englishman have time to get drunk.
Anyway may I congratulate you on your physical resemblance to sven, have you also just resigned from a £5 million pound a year job doing f*** all, and did you shag ulrika?

The New England Patriots won all three Super Bowls by 3 points — two of them with last second field goals by Adam Vinatieri.
But still, it is a shame to see a team eliminated from a tournament played only once every 4 years because the goalkeeper on the other team guesses "left" or "right" correctly more often. I saw two World Cup games and both ended that way.
There are never shoot-outs in the Stanley Cup playoffs (ice hockey), although they are used in the regular season (casual fans like it). But ice hockey is a different (and much faster and more physical) game than soccer.
The guy I was watching the game with is a huge soccer fan and suggested playing quarters instead of halfs and allowing much more liberal substitutions (to get fresh legs and to create certain matchups) would make for better play, less injuries and maybe more scoring chances.

Another idea to break TIED games,,, 10 minutes each way with 9 men,, no result 10 each way with 7, then 5, etc etc. Has some merit.

The English goalkeeper needs to learn how to read body language. The Portuguese goalkeeper was correct on each kick. It's a shame England played most the game a man down and to loose it because your goalkeeper is unable to read kickers.
Anyway congratulations to England for advancing so far.
I hear the English manager at Toxic threw a royal fit and refused to serve any Portugal fan! Sore looser that English manager.

In 3 1/2 years of living in Thailand I dont remember ever seeing a tourist from Portugal...and I was in alot of bars 
England didnt bring the A game to this cup and I cant help but blame Sven for not getting his troops prepared...but Rooney ultimatley cost them this match.
they still had the coolest kits LOL!

Will....by the time you get back I'll be on a two week all expenses paid trip to the UK.
I don't wanna go there, it's a dump with shite weather, but it will be nice to leave Thailand for a while, man needs a break......
