my business asscociates are telling me that Thaksin is planning a military take over of the present government in early July. He's getting in before he is brought to book for his acountancy errors.
I am not one for politics usually and over the years have listened to my chums talking about government issues and only really taking note with tax issues. Coups have come and gone, but I've always been in UK when they happen so never experienced the event or is it non-event.
I coming to BK for most of July, and that this time i'm told getting around may be a bit difficult with air, road & rail networks under close control, cars being searched etc.
I dont want to be a scare -monger although I am more concerned that my mongering might be impeeded.
Have any members experienced Bangkok when a coup is taking place. I dont expect marshall law with curfews to be put into place, just really want to know if all the dens if iniquity will carry on, regardless of the situation.

The last coup was the "cutest" I have ever experienced or heard of.
Been in a Sukh. restaurant that night and the owner told us to "better go home because there are tanks are in the streets..." We did and arriving at home we followed BBC as long as it was there... Next day was a bit quiet all over BK, but after that things went back to normal or even funny very quick and tourists and fotografers and coyote dancer started to conquer the tanks... Well it doesn't necessarily have to be that easy next time...
Large parts of the army were against Thaksin, I doubt he is able to mibilize the other part (his part) for a coup nowadays. If he is, we might see some profound trouble in LOS... But in that case they always have the king who can interefere and end all violant clashes...

Yeah, I thought the military was NOT friendly to Thaksin, so I hardly see that as possible - and why would Thaksin want to push over his own nominee

Good Lord. Is this what we have come to? Someone hears a rumor that this poor, benighted little country is going to be slammed with yet another military coup and the only thing he worries about is whether the whorehouses will still be open when he swans through on his annual debauch.
Absolutely pathetic. No wonder Thais generally view foreigners here as not much more than pond scum.

If a coup takes place, I doubt very much it will be pro-Thaksin.
But the army is more divided than it would appear at first sight and a second coup may well be more bloody than the first one.
Anyway, the only result of the first coup and the parliamentary election that followed, apart from the dismal mismanagement of the country by both coup-makers and elected rulers, has been to highlight how divided the country is and how uncertain its future is, particularly as two of the untouchable pillars of the current system of influence and power near their end of life.

I can only relate what I was told yesterday over the phone.
Something about judges being sent cookie boxes stuffed full of cash so that Thaksin's court case gets thrown out. However one judge, she told me his name but I cant recall it, has gone public and reported it to the newspapers.
Now, my contact was one of those who marched against Thaksin, held up plackards in one of the squares(I'm sorry to be so vague and Im ending up like one of those who starts rumours with no substance). But my contact is a factory owner and involved in local politics so I beleive what she tells me.
She did say that there will not be any anti Thaksin rallies as she believes he will get his come-upance in court.
She mentioned that various generals have had financial gifts bestowed on them so it MAY get nasty.
I love Thailand, I love the people and I have lived the Issan life for a few years-its tragic that so much money has been milked from the countries coffers when there are people living in poverty.

If Thaksin were to come back in power the level of corruption would be incomprehensible..
he would feel absoluty untouchable and greater than he already feels..
I hope to buddha that never happens, although mrs atl would probably support it
