My business associate has just emailed me warning me not to come. She is very pro-active anti Thaksin lobbyist and often has a tendancy to 'overexagerate' things. This is an extract of her email to me today : RE: Bangkok trip in April Pls postpone your trip to Bangkok due to unstabilised situation in Thailand. Airport will not close according to Thaksin 's Protester, I do not count on these people. Thaksin 's mob closed many street in Bangkok last Thursday 2nd April, 2009. They block the streets lead to Hostpitals, the traffic throughout Bangkok was paralysed til 3.00 am in the morning. They will do again after Songkran and they intend to block the street until the Prime Minister resign. I feel so sorry for my country, we do not have royalty Army, Policeman. These peopel have so much respect in Thaksin (because of his money), they want Thaksin to return. I hope today the Prime Minister will come up with strong (a concrete) measure to stop this situation, and arrest Thaksin and his people as soon as possible. Any members living in Thailand care to let me know their views on the situation. I've paid for my flights so I've no choice but to come. My first week is R & R on the suk so all I need to be able to do is get from the airport to my hotel on S4 and be able to wander the streets between there and Emporium.

Sounds like you're staying in Dynasty Grande. According to my wife who monitors the situation on skype with her sister for hours every day, there is no plan with the mob to surround the Dynasty Grande, so you should be fine.

This time it looks bad. I have canceled my planned trip next week. Not a sanook time to go to LOS. I see many Govornments published travel warnings to their citizens urging them to cancel planned vacations and for those in Thailand to stay away from any gathering places (which is not legal now anyway given the emergency state). LOS is turning into LOT (land of tears).. very sad to see.... This is last thing Thai economy needed now.. investors will stop plans or pull out, tourists wont go, Bhat will go back to 50 per US$? A very bad situation for the simple Thai people whom just want to make a living and just want to have some sanook from time to time. Dirty politics is everywhere.... just recently in the UK a plan to spread fallse rumors on the oposition leader and his wife has been exposed. You can be sure it would have gone through without such exposure (and of course UK PM Brown dismissed his "advisor" for this, someone needs to pay you know... ). So if such things happen in the UK what do you think that Thailand is all land of saints (LOS) ? Stay away and stay safe..... Ap.-

Well, your business associate's fear (and yours to some extend) is something that is increasingly wrong with this world. We, the western people who have it all, are getting more and more ruled by fear. The fear of losing "it". Whatever that "it" maybe. We tend to lose perspective totaly. And that makes the loonies amongst us get to the top. "Ooow, there is a beard in a cave in Afganistan. I (a dirtfarmer in backward Montana) am afraid of that beard. Let's vote Bush and his politics of fear." Well, what happened to the USA is history now. The USA is almost history for that matter, and pulling the world with them down the drain. Ok, big intro for this question, now your answer. Thailand is not Ruanda or some other banana republic in dark africa where one tribe is going slauhtering willy nilly through the streets, killing everything on their way. It is a handfull of people that are being paid by Thaksin to make some noise. Ok, given they maybe a big handfull, but thailand is a longway away from Ruanda. So what could happen to you? You could end up staying a day or 2 longer in LOS. What do you lose? Nothing much I guess. You may even be insured for the lost time. What does canceling your tickets cost you? It sounds that is much more than having a CHANCE of losing a day. Just do not go wandering around big groups with the same shirt while wearing an opposing color. But if you must, then do not try to draw attention on your self by pulling something like gun from your pocket. Use your brain and behave sensibly, then you will be ok. Who was it that said : "We only have to fear fear itself"?

You are right! Never surrender to "it" because you may loose "it". The best way forward is not to give in to fear, even if it may you loom stupid (and eventually costs you your death). The example to follow is that of those French who last week had their sailboat taken over by pirates: they never gave up and kept going. Below excerpt from news on the case (taken from two different sources). * French ignored advice and sailed towards Somalian waters after saying "The pirates must not be allowed to destroy our dream." PARIS (AFP) — A French couple who set sail for Zanzibar with their three-year-old son were repeatedly warned to avoid the Somali coast before their boat was hijacked, officials said Tuesday. Somali pirates seized the Tanit yacht on Saturday, the third French sailing boat to be hijacked in a year. Chloe and Florent Lemacon had left France in July last year with their son Colin, then two years old, aboard the 12.5 metre (42-feet) Tanit and picked up another couple along the way. "The crew was repeatedly warned by French authorities of the risks they were facing by sailing off the Somali coast, especially with a smaller sail boat," said foreign ministry spokesman Eric Chevallier. "It is difficult to understand why these warnings were not heeded," he said. Writing on their Internet blog two weeks before the hijacking, the Lemacon couple said they had started sailing with the lights off to avoid detection. "We are in the middle of the piracy zone, but so far there is nothing to report." "The danger is there and has indeed become greater over the past months, but the ocean is vast. The pirates must not be allowed to destroy our dream," they wrote. ....... According to the BBC, President Sarkozy's office released a statement saying a French sailboat, seized Saturday off the coast of Somalia, was the target of a French commando raid Thursday. According to the release, two pirates and a hostage were killed in the operation and three others taken prisoner. WAY TO GO!
