There are special seats on busses which custom, and rules, dictate must be given to monks, elderly, officials, disabled. Most people vacate these seats as required. In my example, the monk was sitting doewn the back. To start kissing infront of a man who has taken a vow of celibacy ... these people buy tourist guides just to look the part, or what??

Under the circumstances you have posted, then I would have be polite and asked her to move because she was sitting in reserved seats. If that did not work, then I would've been a little more verbally aggressive, but not rude. If that failed, then I would've given up my seat and stood right infront of her seat and would've continued to grill her on her lack or ediquette.

the same situation can be witness at 6 pm when the National Anthem is played. no matter where u are, JJ market, Siam Square , any places with live radio broadcast. everything comes to a stand still, people phause to observe and respect the Thai National Anthem!!
its certainly a proud moment for the Thais!!

I told her she couldn't sit next to a monk, so she moved. It was her friends kissing right in front of him which was worse.

Thanks to all for kicking off this thread. In the original example, the lady was sitting in a seat on the boat designated "Monks Only." When the monk (politely, according to the story) pointed this out to here, she flew off the handle and refused to move. I think that is "mariat mai dee mahk mahk" but that is just MHO.
I recall one day in December I was on the Sky Train heading to Nana (my TGF had gotten off at an earlier stop to go to "skoon" ). The train was filling up, and a Thai lady, purse and bags in hang, walked on and stood in front of me. I smiled, stood up, and offered her my seat. She seemed genuinely surprised, smiled graciously, said "Thank you" in English, and sat down. This had an interesting ripple effect on the faces of the other Thais in the car, and brought out a few smiles. A few other farangs were sitting in seats nearby and seemed oblivious (while other equally package-heavy Thai ladies stood). IMHO, this is a basic courtesy, and I would do it anywhere.

For reasons I can't quite fathom, I'm always oddly moved by the National Anthem before movies. My TGF is a big fan of "action" or "scary" movies (not a big fan of "romantic" movies -- hmmm, maybe a message for me there) so we've hit the theaters a lot. I notice everyone yaks up a storm before the film, but clams up and stands up right away when the music starts.

For those with Thai friends incountry, what is their response to seeing other farangs attempt to correct a "fellow" farang's bad behavior? Is this considered a loss of face for the "correctee" (or the "corrector" ) and is this something a Thai would ever do to another Thai?
