It is also used now to try to foil terrorists. Even within the US, all financial institutions must report any cash transaction over $10,000 to the federal government.

I did, That is what I figured as well... Thanks for the info.

You may carry more than $10K in and out of the country in cash but you must declare it to the Feds if you are exceeding the $10k amount.

I have carried lots in and out and never had a problem.

How can anyone possibly spend more $10,000 in BKK in two weeks?

This question might call for a new thread!!

You need to qualify it though by saying that the spender cannot buy anything substantial (automobile, motorcycle, house in Isaan, water buffalo, etc.)

This should just be the fun fund.

I don't plan on bringing that much... but that sort of thing is good to know though. I am looking forward to this upcoming trip. To be honest, after reading some of the posts here, I get a little aprehensive on coming... I mean I am but maybe second guessing a little. Maybe, I am just thinking of the unknown and it gets in my brain.

However, I am thinking about my trip and if I should do 5 days in BKK, 5 days in Pattaya, and then end up in BKK for the last 5 days or so...

BKK is very safe compared to any comparable sized city in the West and it is unlikely you will have any problems. It does help your experience if you read the forums first about logistics (such as getting a taxi at the airport) but even then, the worst that can happen is that you may end up paying $15 for a limo to your hotel (instead of $7 for a taxi).

Picking the right hotel or serviced apartment is probably the most important thing that you need to do in advance (besides getting a passport).

You have to be a little more careful in Pattaya, but Thailand is probably safer than where you live now. Don't be intimidated by the language, because if you know English you will have no problems.

I just received my passport and I have been to much of a chicken to start my shots so I may just take my chances. Who know's? I am now bringing a buddy of mine along and man is he excited. He parties harder then anyone I know and that may be a bad thing in BKK. He's not beligerant but can cause trouble. He is a pretty big guy. Think of a mexican sumo wrestler. The weird thing is that he is telling me that he is afraid to apply for a passport because of a court no-show for a misdemeanor from way back in '98. Anyone know what he should do or is he pretty much f***ed? Anyone go through a situation like that or any suggestions would be appreciated. If he is f***ed then I may just push my trip up a little and come before New Years as planned.

Good move - any of the diseases you would have received shots for are far preferable to a tiny prick on your skin from the needle. Think of it this way: If you get sick, you'll have to face a HELL of a lot of needles, and a disease that stays with you for the rest of your life, and can potentially incapacitate you.

The alternative is to get your shots, get 5-6 shots in your arm, and some follow-ups a month and six months later, and you are pretty much immune for life, for most of them (Tetanus requires a refresher every six to ten years).

Being 'chicken' is not being very smart.

Be careful in your choice of travel companions - they can make the difference between a good trip, or one where you end up baby sitting your buddy. If he's a troublemaker, I'd advise that you reconsider, especially if he drinks a lot, and gets in trouble.

My nephew's been going once with a buddy of his who's a total loser, starts drinking at 10 in the morning, totally drunk by night time, doesn't recall what he did the night before, and always out of money. My nephew ended up spending most of his time babysitting, or worrying where the other guy was, and the portion of my trip that I spent with them was mostly a bloody waste.

Pull his court information on the misdemeanor, and have him take care of it and clear it (will require a court appearance). There's no other way, except hire a lawyer (which only costs more money, and achieves the same, but might be an option if you buddy has money and is a chicken). Get it fixed. This isn't rocket science.

Apart from that, the worst that will happen is that his passport will be denied, but chances are it won't (unless he's got a felony, or child support he skipped out on).

Everything you need to know about disease and vaccinations in SEA:

http://www.cdc.gov/travel/seasia.htm#vaccines

Note that if you are a blood donor you may not be able to donate if you have traveled to some parts of LOS, Malaysia, Indonesia, Cambodia, or Vietnam (based on Malaria or Dengue outbreaks).

But what the hell it is not just LOS, the last time I tried to donate they told be I was barred for life because I spent too much time in the UK:
