Turist,

Some of this may be of help, but I donít get to LOS that much now (used to live there) and I may be out of date for some things.

Hotels

Street 1 Lodge,  Sukhumvit Soi 1   fax 655-1891 about 650 Baht (used to be ok Iíve been told but my information is a bit out of date)

From a previous thread (say thank you to thaiprivateeye)

ìNothing wrong with the majority of cheaper hotels, but the key is of course location, strongly suggest you stay in the region between Sukhumvit road, Soi's [side streets] 1 to 21, - think plenty of Hotel reviews on the site, ! small place worth a look maybe "Premier" on the corner of Soi 8, about 650 Baht per night, $US 15,  clean, safe, friendly staff, no hassles with girls, and has TV with English channels, bath, Hot water, Air-con ñ a lot of places in a similar vein, as long as you arrive during the day, take a taxi, or the airport bus,  into the area, best to say to the "Ambassador" - as its right in the middle of this region, and all cabbies know it, and then from there, just walk around and ask at different places.î

Other ways to save money ñ

Donít fall in love with the first TG you go with sheíll probably spot you as a LOS cherry and take you for a bomb!! 5555

Eat the local food in the shop houses (just make sure your ready with antibiotics if your system ainít up to it).

Avoid - Tuk  Tuks unless you are very sure of the price before starting the journey.

If you use your Visa card then take cash from the ATMís with it (Landmark hotel outside ATM used to be reliable). If you use the visa for purchases you will probably be charged more than the instant interest you are charged on cash withdrawals.

Avoid taxis outside Patpong.

Avoid Patpong (personal opinion).

Keep perspective on what you are being charged for all things, donít be too much of a Cheap Charlie, if you count every cent (Baht) you will spend all your time worrying about money instead of enjoying the wonderful country (plus the Thais get fed up with Cheap Charlieís and just walk away from you).

Other Things
Learn at least the basics of Thai ñ hello, thank you, counting, where is the toilet (after the shop house meal and your delicate European guts this may be essential!!!) etcÖ

Shop around a few of the local travel agents for tours up North some of them are really good (Elephants, hill tribes, etcÖ)

Do not speak of or act in a disrespectful manner to the King, any of the Royal Family or any images etc of them.

Stay calm, shouting at Thais will get you nowhere, count to ten, smile and explain again what, you want, are looking for or whatever.

Number one thingÖÖ. enjoyÖÖ.enjoyÖÖÖenjoyÖÖÖ..

Hope it helps and maybe some of the other guys will correct things where Iím out of date (or wrong).

Great Rob;
You mensioned at least 2 tropics I haven't even thought about, and I hope it's okay I ask a bit more about them.

VISA
Would you exchange all your THB-mony before you leave for BKK?
Can't I trust every bank in BKK (they got banks right, lol), I mean every ATM, My plan was to bring some THB and then get the rest from the ATM's so that I don't have too much laying at my hotel box. (Hotel boxes is 100% safe I hope), but is this a bad idea. THB is expensive to exchange in Denmark because our banks steals too, noooo hehe.

Local travel agents.
That sounds nice, I wanna ride an elephant (not a fat woman, but the animal you know, and not in the pervert sence ) They annonce a lot of expensive trips like that on the Internet, but not with a local travel agent I should mean. Could someone tell me how to find one who will let me ride an elepanth

And a new odd one:
Does all toilets have paper?

And a nother
I think I found my place to stay. If it isn't nana condo then it wil probably be this:

147-149 Sukhumvit Road, Soi 22 Prakanong

Family run place with a nice courtyard. Quiet and friendly. To find it, go down Sukhumvit Soi 22, take the third alley on left, walk down this alley to the end and down the end on the right is Srinuan Apartments. It's a bit hard to find, as the sign is only in Thai. A small, simple, partly furnished air-con room is 300 baht per night with toilet, small cupboard, small balcony but no TV. Bigger rooms go for 400 baht. Also rents out rooms for 5000 baht per month. Quite a number of farang residents. A real gem if you can find it! Guest friendly.

Turist,

Ask away with the questions, but as I said before I'm a bit rusty on information so hopefully the other guys will help out where they can,

Visa & Bankcards

If you have an international bank card which you can draw down from while overseas then use that in any ATM machine in BKK, (ATM's that indicate that they take the international card) none of them will rip you off. Your Visa card draw downs should be held back until late in the vacation but it may be worth making one withdrawal at the start to make sure it works!

Taking money to BKK, its personal choice, I always take US $ (clean undamaged $100 notes), they are easy to change. I always change $100 when I get to BKK airport, I never obtain Thai Baht from my starting country regardless of which country I'm starting from. For the rest of my money exchanges I use whatever the best rate is in one of the small exchange shops in Sukhumvit (used to be a good one in Sukhumvit Soi 11) but really the difference in exchange rates is so small its hardly worth the effort. Always check your cash at the exchange window and never change too much at one time.

The best old favorite is traveler chequeís (American express ones are insured and exchangeable in most places in the world). But they are a hassle in terms of you must go to a bank stand in line etc but they are super safe and if stolen you can get your money back (as long as you have a record of all the numbers of the chequeís stolen).

What is the international systems used in your country for ATMís, name it on the thread and maybe someone can let you know if itís accepted in LOS.

Travel Agents

Used to be ok ones in Soi 3 near Sukhumvit Junction (same side as Hospital), also some on Soi 4 just down from Nana plaza, prices??? No idea.

To ride an elephant just go to the Crocodile farm near BKK (can get a tour bus from travel agent) look at the crocís, play on the shooting range (45 caliber Colt automatics) then get a short ride on an Elephant. Up north you will spend hours on the back of an elephant (good fun except when they blow their nose over their shoulder straight into your face!)

Toilets

They can be pretty disgusting many of them sell you toilet paper at the entrance door, I save my main events in the toilet for the 4 or 5 star hotels public toilets (there is always one nearby to duck into).

Hotel

The ones you have chosen sound fine, donít expect too much and you wonít be disappointed, you will get a much better standard in Pattaya for the same money.

Hope itís of some help and as I said beforeÖÖÖ enjoyÖÖÖ.

- It's of great help, believe that, and as long as someone takes the time to answer my (at sometime stupid i'm sure) questions I will keep on asking because I feel it's making my trip better and better the more tips/hints/triks etc. I get. But please believe that when I get back from my 1 month trip I will not forget this forum, and help any way I can!

As said (by me) before I know you khrab's are living AND ACTING like kings. You gentlemen have often argued about the right amount of tips, payment and soo forth when bringing a girl home. But what about the amount of drinks? I'm sure you all got a magical amount of drinks you give your choosen one before arguering the price, and I would like to draw on your experience!  That is, how long does it "pay" to give a girl a drink?

(before I exquse (lol the spelling again) my spelling again I would like to know how hard it is to read what i'm writing?, after all, when I don't know how to spell a word I spell it like it is pernaunsed (wrong spelling again) - It's getting a bit emberrasing (?) sounding like a teenager!!!

Turist: For a non-native speaker of English you are doing pretty well in my opinion; don't worry about it. I don't think it's difficult to understand you.

I will leave it to others to answer your question about drinks in detail but I will simply say that only buy as many drinks as you need to to get to know a girl enough to make your choice. For some folks they might just see a girl they like and choose her immediately -- no drink purchase required. For others (like myself) they want time to talk to the girl first. Then a drink or 2 or more is necessary and/or appropriate.

You don't have to be rich to have fun here. You seem to have a good attitude; that and some reasonably smart behavior (and a little bit of money) is often enough to have a FABULOUS time in LOS.
