In Sukhumvit? Manhattan Hotel is the best bet IMHO.

JR and HS, have booked a tower wing room for 3 nights for $27 US a night. Including breakfast. I agree it has an ideal location, and is girlfriend friendly. Made it a 2 adult booking so that I don't have to pay any surcharge for bringing in BG's. After that I will probably head to Pattaya and find a place there.

MickyK1971, That's a pretty good price. I believe they will even give you a breakfast coupon for you potential companions. I kind of forgot to mention that you will have to work on getting a queen size bed. Ask right away when checking in. They mostly have singles. They told me to check on the queens or whatever they call it and the next day I asked early morning and they moved me to the bigger bed room. This is the same problem that you could get if you had gone to Manhattan also, in regards to bed sizes. If this is your first time in Bangkok, try to get your bearings straight if you arrive late at night. It's not a big deal safety wise, but can be a little frustrating not finding your hotel. Like many of the hotels suggested here, they aren't exactly right on Sukhumvit. There is a big courtyard and car park with many businesses on the right that you have to walk by to get to Sukhumvit from the hotel. There are many internet cafes and regular thai massage places along this strip. If you walk to the Soi from the hotel instead you just hang a left on it to go to Sukhumvit. I'm not sure if this makes sense, but think it will when you get there. I think the Grand President many people talk about is very near the Ambassador on the same soi.

HS Thanks for your info. Have been to BKK before and am familiar with the Sukhumvit surroundings, although my memory has faded a bit during time. Luckily for me I arrive in the morning around 10.30. Will have all the time in the world to get settled in. Besides I am taking a cab to bring me to the hotel. Figure that 250 Baht is not to much for creature comfort and easy travel to the hotel. Cheers and CU around. MickyK

I have a feeling it will be more than 250 Baht at that time of the day. Traffic won't be so nice as late night and the meter will run. But after a long flight, it's easier with a taxi. I would probably go with the 100 baht Sukhumvit bus at that time, because I am a cheap charlie when it comes to myself.

HS Took the Sukhumvit bus the first time and it is oke. But this time I have a very large suitcase and my laptop with me, and I don't want to lug it around on the streets to the hotel. You're probably right about the taxi fare. Last time, I took a taxi from Sukhumvit soi 3 to the airport and it was somewhere in the neighbourhood of 220 Baht. But that is without the airport surcharge and late at night. So I expect to pay 350 Baht and can live with that. Cheers, MickyK

Fine post. Definitely have a look at a map or two before arriving and visualize directions. Walking distances and time you just have to learn. Also the new guy shouldn't count on some landmarks on their first night out. That food court with the yellow umbrealls you passed on your way out at midnight might be long gone when you stagger home drunk at 3AM, etc. GP aka Gland President is about as far again from the Amabassador driveway on Soi 11 as the driveway is from Sukhumvit and also on the right side. Was a decent place to stay a few years ago but my info is dated.

HS and VJ, I have this map from Nancy Chandler about Bangkok. It has many smaller maps on a big foldable piece of coated paper. All the major area's are on this. Used to have it in a side pocket of my trousers (cargopants) and used it a lot. Best buy recommendation from me. For the newbies around, the map is sold everyware. Just step into a bookstore and they have it, price is around 140 baht. Cheers, MickyK

Just a quick comment on the GP - a year ago, I would have given it an unqualifed recommendation, but they seem to have taken their popularity to heart a bit too much. Still, I like the location better than the Ambassador (quieter), and their is NO guest hassle. Also, the rooms are MUCH nicer and better equipped - TV, CD, stereo, microwave, full size refrigerator, dishes, etc. Longer terms get better rates: 27,000/month last year. Try to get an upper floor in Tower III. Breakfast is good, but not worth the 100 baht/day. (Or 150, if it's not included in the room price) Take the shortcut to Took Lae Dee in Foodland, Soi 5, and eat better for the money. Many posts on this hotel - UTFSE haam sup
