Yes I remember my first time in 1981. There was never any mention of money. Just a meal and perhaps the odd T Shirt.
Though I was very young and handsome then.
I don't think you could get away with that these days !.

Way back in the early 70's when I was first here, on a military base outside Ubon called Utapao, the going rate was bt100 for a bar girl, and that included a room for the night. There was a curfew then so the room was more important than the girl to go with it if you were out past midnight.
Last romp at 6am, and back to base by 7am for work. There was not even a thought about a tip either. The one bad thing was the possesiveness of the girls.
If you slept with one, then she thought she was yours the whole time you were stationed there, and some pretty violent incidences happened if someone was caught butterflying. Not all of them were like that, but the majority were. They'd wait outside the gate for you to get off work.
We lived off base, and the only way to get away from some of them was to move back on base for a few months. My friend had one that followed him to Germany when he got transfered. That was a big shock when the third day he was there she was waiting outside the gate for him...lolol.
The exchange rate was bt20 to the dollar though, and fixed, so it was a bit expensive at $5US long term, but Airmen had money, a whole $550 a month. Cigarettes were $2.30US a carton, and Jack Daniels was $3.70US a fifth, almost a liter.
Mamasan would buy cigs, and JD from us for $10 a carton, or bottle. She sold cigs in the bar for $3 a pack, and JD at $3 a shot. There were much cheaper drinks available, but when you got drunk a few shots of JD were usually bought. When you were out of cigs, and half drunk there was no problem paying rip-off prices for a pack if it was past curfew.
She became very wealthy from black marketing, running girls, and money exchange for $100 bills. She gave double the going rate in MPC (military pay certificates) for $100 bills. You'd have your check sent home then the wife/mother/relative would mail $100 bills back to you. No one messed with military mail.
Except for the war it was a fun time. Doing your job in relation to the war going on could become pretty intense very fast being so close to the Laos/Cambodian border, and having to cross it as part of the job. The girls, and refreshments were the only short escape from the activities, and any price charged at the time would have been payed.
If the girl wasn't on her knees unzipping at the A-frames when you stopped, then she in all likelihood didn't make any money that night. You had to know she really was interested in her work, and wasn't going to waste any time....afterall there was a curfew.

Not trying to be pedantic here but U-tapao is not outside Ubon Ratchatani.
U-Tapao is located between Pattaya and Sattahip/Rayong and is probably around 300 clicks from Ubon.
The Air America pilots I know called Ubon airport, surprisingly, "Ubon".
That 20 baht to the dollar is spot on.
