I thought there is an option that you can rush/get back quicker for your passport. Did you apply the passport at the post office?

Yeah, dont exchange alot money at airport..also check the correct amount there too.
Here are couple links for exchange rate:
http://www.superrich1965.com/app/our_rates.aspx
http://www.siamexchange.co.th/index.php
Dont exchange at the banks for at the malls either b/c their rates are lower..some banks require ID/passport.

For CC, you have to pay overseas fee (3% ??). I think only the one that you pay annual fee and the one from Capital One that you dont have to pay overseas fee.
Of course for the hotel, you have to use your CC for reservation and security deposit...but I always pay cash when I check out.

... a few notes on BKK ground transportation... seems minor, but can be a constant aggravation until you figure out what is expected:

... always keep no less than 4 or 5 THB 20 notes onhand when you get into a taxi... taxis drivers smell tourists like bloodhounds and routinely appeal that they have no change, hoping you will just give them the THB 100 note and be off.

... a THB 500 or THB 1,000 note is beyond most vendors ability to easily make change for, excepting 'formal' shops and such... keep lots of THB 100 and THB 20 notes, breaking your THB 1,000 notes throughout the day.

... while tipping taxi drivers is not expected, rounding the fare up to the nearest THB 5 or 10 THB is normal... a THB 20 tip would be generous, unless you are making a THB 200-300 trip.

... delighted by your newbie freshness, many taxi drivers will tempt you with all kinds of special insights... there is no special deal or special place a taxi driver (or, any stranger on the street) can offer you that you want... waste of time and potential rip-off pricing.

... if the taxi gets on a toll road, you are expected to pay the toll... generally, as you enter each toll booth.

... for taxis FROM the airport, you are expected to pay the meter rate, plus a THB 50 airport surcharge fee at the end of the trip, plus road tolls as above... for taxis TO the airport, there is no airport surcharge fee.

... your distinct newbie scent might prompt taxi drivers to explain that their taxi meter is out of order and offer to negotiate a taxi fee... be assured that it will be 3-5 times the meter rate...give them one chance to turn the meter on... if they don't, just walk.

... there is no reason - as in none - for you to get into a tuk-tuk... ever... fun as they appear, they are uncomfortable, noisy, hot, put you at eye-level to bus exhaust pipes, sit stuck in traffic just like cars, and set you up for myriad scams (gem scam, tailor scam, massage scam, and on, and on, and on).

... the BTS and MRT are the best ways to get about town... period... urge you to select a hotel proximate to a BTS station, and organize your trips during high traffic periods br BTS or MRT.

... quickly check the flow of traffic before getting onto a taxi... during BKK's notorious peak hour traffic, what might appear as a bit of congestion could actually be a parking lot... they are easily confused... if in doubt, get yourself to a BTS or MRT station, reschedule to go at a later time, bring a newspsper and prepsre for a long and frustrating drive, or bag the trip altogether.

It may be more convenient to get yourself a week pass for the BTS, as you will most likely be using it a lot - if you don't intend to, you should be. It's very convenient.

Carry a BTS (and MRT) map with you, to get your bearings (haha -- BTS joke).

Wow, what the heck...

I'm me, I'm not Blonk, enough said.

I got an email on Friday afternoon, that says my passport was approved and is in the mail... The email said 6 days for the thing to come by "priority mail"... Sigh. But they did say approved, so I thought email was enough to trust, and started some things that I put off until I got the passport.

I decided to get the vaccination first. Luckily I live near a clinic, and they took me in as a walk in, and I got Hep A, B, tetanus, and Typhoid. 400 bucks.

Got home, started buying the airline ticket that I mentioned with the great price. It was Emirate Airline, and my credit card blocked the charge (I think because it was from UAE, welcome to paranoid America!). So I called the credit card, and finally proved I was who I said I was, and they removed the block. Because I am deaf I have to use a thing called Relay service, and lets just say it takes a f***ing LONG time to do a routine call... I had to answer a LOT of questions. I go back to the Emirate Airline site, and they won't accept my charge again... I called the credit card AGAIN, and this time they said it wasn't them. Go back to EA's site, and the price is gone. Went 400 dollars up. Looked like I literally caught them removing the "sale" while ordering the second time... Sigh. So for now, waiting until next week for the next round of "surprise deal" the airline f***ers do. Needless to say, I am not pleased with airlines.

Got in contact with Tim while dealing with the credit card thing (multitasking), and he was great, and told me to check out Darjelling. Seems nice and I am going to grab it when I can, but now I gotta wait until the dang airline thing is fixed up until I can make the hotel reservation. Sorry, Saucytim. But I will use his Thaidiscounthotel.com site, seems like a good thing to me.

So, passport and vaccination, good. Airline and hotel (for now) bad. Will work on the last two on Monday or Tuesday, when the airlines do their game all over again. Am I forgetting anything?

By the way, before this flame war started, Daffy and Magnum both gave some nice and intelligent advice. Thanks for mentioning getting 100 and 20 Baht notes, that especially was something I hadn't thought about. And the BTS map is a good idea, thanks.

Please bear in mind that Hep A and Hep B require multiple shots, spread certain times apart, or else you're not immunized. Be absolutely sure to make the follow-up dates!!!!

Airline deals are dependent on proximity to your departure date - the closer to the date you get, the more the price goes up.

Then again, my travel agent always manages to get me tickets 48 hours before departure same price or cheaper than online deals - that's because travel agents (especially Chinese ones) have access to bulk ticket prices.

If there's a sort of China Town in your cry, go there, and check out pricing of 1-3 Chinese travel agents. You may end up with surprisingly low pricing.

In terms of getting a good overview of available flights, use

Hipmunk.com

Just take a look. You'll find out why I'm a fan.

Do you plan to use a phone while in Thailand ? Do you currently use a smartphon, like an iPhone?

Daffy, thank you for the concerned reminder to head back for the follow up. I knew about it and planned to do it, but heck, after reading your message, I went to the calender program on this computer and put an appointment in to TRIPLE remind me not to forget. Thanks.

Thank you for Hipmunk. I have been using Kayak, Yapta, and skyscanner, but I will add Hipmunk because it does currently show one set of cheaper tickets than the other... ANA... Does anyone have experience with ANA? If it was JAL, I would be all over it in a second. But I have no knowledge about ANA.

I did go to Chinatown here in D.C., and it was a total bust. The ONE agency I found refused to acknowledge this white boy, denied even being a travel agency. So, went to this other area that has some ethnic stores. Found a Thai Grocery store, and the very nice mamasan inside gave me two numbers to call, but I thought I had a great deal with Emirate so I didn't call them. Guess I will follow up on them now. Thanks for reminding me.

And last, the phone thing. I have this guy very nicely advising me via the message system here on BTF, and he too brought up the phone idea. The thing is, I am deaf, and don't use phones like you guys do. In fact, I don't even own a phone in the house, I am totally phone free (my yearly call is made on my computer). I don't really know if a phone is worth me getting in Bangkok.

And last, we didn't pick up the mail yesterday, and when we did today, what would you know... There my passport was, all new and official looking. So, passport is in my hand, and Bangkok is now officially my designation for February. Woot!

ANA is really nice, much better compared to United. All the flight attendants are females, and much more pleasant compared to the United crew.

Achmed the dead terrorist knows what he is talking about, ANA is very nice, similar to JAL, Korean Airlines, etc. If you have a choice not to fly to LOS on an American airline, take it.

Curious about your non-phone usage. Does this mean you don't text either? These days I probably use my phone more to text than talk.

Forget making phone calls - its all about texting, or emailing, these days.

Since you are deaf, that's wht I thought my be the most useful to you, to use a smartPhone (well, iPhone, really) to assist you with your communication with the girls - most of the girls I know text exclusively, and writing might be the best lingua franca for you, considering your situation.

It's actually really good that you don't have a phone - yet. This way you don't have the problem of having an incompatible phone, and can (if you want) pick one up in Thailand on your first day or two (the phone will work in the US upon your return).

There are several advantages to you in getting yourself an iPhone (or another smartPhone, though I'm biased to the iPhone), aside from the texting angle.

- larger touch screen, pull up a notepad app, and write out what you want to say if the girl doesn't understand you.
- text her, live, while talking to her. Sounds weird, but it's fun.
- text to speech, baby, text to speech.
- pull up any of a plethora of Thai dictionary apps that use common phrases, display them on the screen, and some even 'speak' them in Thai.
- built-in maps and gps, and you're never lost. I usually pull it up to show me nearby ATMs, or BTS stations, if I'm in an area of town I'm not too familiar with.
- iPhones and smartPhones have web browsers built-in, and that means... Immediate access to BTF! Gives you this great source right at your fingertips.

The list goes on, but making phone calls is the least thing you'd use it for.

There's a burgeoning used iPhone market, where you can get a recent model iPhone 3GS for around $200-$300 (or the latest iPhone 4S for $750). I help you, but I haven't sold iPhones in Thailand since 2008, when it was the first generation iPhone, though I can point you towards helpful resources.

The best way to get hooked up is by picking up a TRUE sim card ($3/100 baht) and topping it up with about a $30 'refill' of credits - you'd then use that to sign up for the unlimited 3G Internet plan, and you're set for the duration of your stay. After you're done, just throw away the sim card, and sign up with a plan back in the US (if you want to, by then) - or sell the phone on eBay, and probably make some profit

Either way, it's something worth considering, as I think it will bring you many advantages.
