Turist,

Couple of points I would like to make to help you:

Blattsucker said:
"And about food, I think you can multiply your budget by 5. Because eating from roadside stalls is maybe what the Thais do (and you in Denmark) but if you have seen them I think 90% of us white people would not eat there if you put a flamethrower on a stall to kill the germs. So if you don't eat pussy, why should I expect you to eat roaches."

This is well off the mark! (though the rest of his post was good).

Some of the best food going in Thailand is from the stalls, I think you would find most people (white included) who have spent a reasonable amount of time in Thailand partake of and enjoy the food stalls produce and the many good Thai shop house restaurants, obviously use common sense but a good guide is if there are many people eating at a stall (especially Thais) then it is good (safe) food.

BigDUSAís last post about money management and care was spot on.

If you must use your Visa card use it to withdraw money from the ATMís.

Generally if you use common sense in all situations you will be fine and if you get ripped off it will be for a minimum amount.

If you look for, or believe some one offering, an unbelievable bargain you will get in trouble.

Relax and enjoy!!!

Hi Rob,

I have 2 things to say about my food comment.

First I said "..... if you have seen them .... " So I only meant that they LOOK unhealthy, not ARE unhealthy. Granted, my statement was not very powerful in this meaning.

Secondly, Turist is from Denmark, which is like my country (Holland) a VERY clean country. If you want to sell some food from a roadside stall here, it takes about 5 minutes to have the foodgestapo breathing down your neck. 5 minutes to test your shit. And 1 second to close you down because you are a health threat. On a nice summerday your fooditems will look like a petri dish experiment in 30 minutes. I think you would agree that Holland has noway near thai temperatures.
I have never seen a health inspection in thailand so we can assume things are not tiptop over there.

And your point that thais eat it, so we can eat it, is a certain one way ticket to heaven / hell (take your pick).
That they are immune to there own germs does not mean we are. (Never heard about the spaniards exterminating allmost the entire american indian population with the common cold?)

I personaly have eaten in cambodia (which is a cesspitt compared to thailand) but I was thinking of poor whitey who was afraid of eating pussy and started this topic. Some of you stay in 5 star hotels, some in 0 star. Same goes for food. And I put Turist more on the safe side of the foodchain. And I was only talking about roadside stalls, not about restaurants.

So what you or I would do is not realy an issue here. This is Turists topic so it is up to him what to eat. I only give my side of the information and would like nothing more than to be corrected. But I think you would be fighting an uphill battle on this one.

If we tell him you can live on 10 B a day for food. Are you going to send him a check when he is starving in his last week???? Better safe than sorry I would say.

I have seen these stalls off of the Soi's along Sukhumvit.  I couldn't read all the Thai but I could read the prices.  Less than 30B for almost anything on the menu.  And then I saw their "3 bucket system" of cleaning dishes.  One bucket has soap suds + uneaten food particles, the second has mostly murky water, and the third has seemingly clear water.  The dishes go into bucket 1, then to bucket 2 then to bucket 3.  Then you get it.  Hey, at least they don't have to write a SOP for this.

Hi Blattsucker,
Each to their own! Tourists, Expats, Thais, all enjoy the Thai food from stalls to shop house cafes (upmarket stall basically) through to the indoor restaurants. One of the most vibrant parts of the Thai experience is the food. If you don't want it don't eat it don't! But don't write it off or scare people until they have seen it for themselves, my earlier post in this thread said
"Eat the local food in the shop houses (just make sure your ready with antibiotics if your system ainít up to it). "
and
"(after the shop house meal and your delicate European guts this may be essential!!!)"

Itís also worth noting that a great many mass poisonings of tourists happens in 4 and 5 star hotel buffets within western countries!!

Main thing is that Turist is well informed now from all (excellent) points of view and can make up his own mind when he gets there.

So peace brother

Well, I agree with both people on the food issue. When I first came here I was forced to eat from the carts and small shops due to funding. I spent alot of time shitting my brains out, and two trips to the hospital for severe food posioning.

But now, after 2 years of eating it, I have developed some resistance to the bacteria I guess? A slight case of "burning atomic water shit" happens maybe 1 or 2 times per week. This is also typical for Thai people.

You can eat for 100 baht per day, but be prepared to shit alot and vomit also. If you spend about 500 baht per day on food I think you will be safe.

Thai food is some of the most delicious food I have ever eaten in all my travels. I recommend that you try at least some of it, but make sure it is at a nice clean resteraunt.

One good rule to go by when picking a resteraunt to eat at (My Thai wifes father told me this). If there are alot of Thai people eating there it means that it is good food and clean. If there are not alot of people eating there it is probably because the food is bad and/or it will make you sick. I have gone by this rule while eating alone and haven't had any problems.

Thx again!!

- From reading your many posts I have no doubt that the food issue is subject to individual health and the level of bacterial immunity given by the social standarts of one's home country. I think that my system can't defeat that many bacterias so I have to be cautious when choosing a place to eat. But as you said, I'll just have to use my common sense when choosing a place to eat (and anything else for that matter). I wouldn't like to have any problems with my delicate European gut, so spending more on food is preferable (but not 100% safe)!

Also, I have a new budget!  125.000 THB (~4.500 /day).  (I have found a hotel in BKK I like at a rate of 250 - 450 which I share with my friend (rend an extra room when we bring TG home if needed).  I am also going to Pattaya and Kohsamui (and lots of other places, perhaps).  This has to be enough!

BigDUSA, Thank you for your kind offer, and it is most likely that I will take you up on it.
