BigDUSA
Be very afraid of eating food from street vendor. I'm speaking now as sergeant BiGDUSA, US Army. I was in the army for 9 years for 4 years I was a food sanitation inspector. I have been to LOS 11 times and I have come down with the shit's and I'm carefull where I eat. I eat at the major hotel's and at McDonalds, Burger KIng, KFC. These places have high standards as far as the food they buy ie; refrigeration, clean water they make sure their people wash their hands after using the WC. As a short term tourist I don't want to waste 3 to 5 days dealing with food poisoning. I love Thai food but I only eat it at the hotel.

I eat yogurt for 7 days before I leave and during my trip. The bacteria in yogurt is good bacteria and it replaces all the bad in your intestinal tract, helps prevent the shit's.

Class dismissed.      8 days but whose counting

nokna
my favourite places to eat are the street vendors.
i think they are wonderful.

yes i do get an upset stomach and get the shits, but i can't think of anywhere i have been in the worls where i have'nt suffered from this complaint.
i must be too delicate.
but it only lasts a couple of days and only means i go to the toilet 3-4 times a day.

but i would put this down to the local tap water more then the food.

Bigin
I got the shits once only on one visit. It was pretty bad, and was morning of the last day when it started. So the airplane ride was rough to say the least. I've eaten at the stalls, things you would probably puke just looking at. But I to have been around the world and always had the "travel sickness" on my trips. It goes away, try going to the phillippines and eat, WHEEEWWW!!! I'm from Louisiana, so the sight of wierd food does'nt bother me, but if there's a wierd or bad taste, then Bigin dont eat it. Do not depend on the smell, ever smell Kimoshi(spel.)

I've been there twice and I never once got the trots either time, and I've EATEN INSECTS. I agree with Jedi Nokna that it probably has more to do with the water then the food which is why I only drank bottled water while I was there and even used it to brush my teeth ( And that includes the ones soaking in a glass all night ). Peace

Both times I was in the Hospital for food poisioning was from eating pork from a street vender. Watch the pork and make sure they cook it really well and it should be okay.

I get the shits wherever I go... must be change in climate or whatever. Anyway, on a trip to LOS I ate for days at street-vendors in BKK with no problems. Moved onto Pattaya to a 4 star hotel. Came back late one night to the hotel, oredered a burger from room-service, stopped eating it when I noticed it was quite undercooked. But it was too late... within hours I was throwing up and shitting something awful. Ended up in hospital in Pattaya cause I was getting severly dehydrated.

Anyway, the funny part came after I got better. MY S.O reckoned I shouldn't eat any more Thai stuff, that I should stick to the western stuff my system is used to. (which was silly as it was a burger in a 4* hotel that had made me sick) Anyway we did as he suggested.

So we find a restaurant of another 4 star hotel in Pattaya and go there for lunch. He orders a burger. I order chicken and rice. I'm sitting watching him take a bite of his burger and notice there is a slug type thing in the meat of his burger... and it's still moving!!!!!!!! ewwwwwwww

Needless to say after that we came to the conclusion that whether it's street vendors or expensive hotels... there's good & bad in both categories.

If you get the really bad shits... just drink plenty of sugary liquid (coke at room temp, shaken to remove the bubbles is fine... and if really bad replace lost salt too).

A litre of boiled water, left to cool to room temp, with 8 teaspoons of sugar and one teaspoon of salt is also good. Or prepared ORS sachets (oral rehydration salts??).

Anywayyyyyy, I love eating at street vendors.

Turist
I will try to think before I eat.  I will bring lots of yogurt pills and perhaps do as BigDUSA said before I leave my home! And then I will hope for the best!!

the street vendors offer some of the most delicious local Thai food.

however, i still make certain precautions, that is ensure the food is stirred fried, soup based or cooked instantly. i always avoid the pre-cooked, raw seafood, curry or food cooked with coconut milk, and of course bottles drinks only, unless its my whisky or JD.

 regards,
 chrisboy

Hi Turist,

It seems I started a small riot about the food. All very well ofcourse, because now you know alot more than you have ever thought of asking.
If you go to Pattaya I can recommend the foodcourt in the Royal Plaza Garden. It's the best (cleanest) foodcourt I've seen in Thailand. Let me explain the concept foodcourt to you, as it is something we europeans have never seen.
Every shoppingmall / bigstore in thailand has a foodcourt. just like we have restaurants in our shoppingmalls and stores. The big difference is that in thailand it is (like the shoppingmalls) a streetvendor collection. It's not a big restaurant that caters to 100's or 1.000's of people. No, it's a big collection of small kitchens that cater to small groups of people. Every stall has it's own specialty and that is what you can get, sometimes nothing more. So you have stalls (or booths) for starters, for drinks, for meals and for deserts. So you can combine your own (eclectic) meal, with things from all over thailand.
It's a bit more expencive than the streetvendors, but cheaper than a restaurant. You can eat a good meal for 100 - 200 Baht.
So why the Royal??? Well it has only plusses I think.
It's clean and big, so you have a great choice (from wienerschnitzel to every part of thailand with its specialties). It's located in the midle of the action. And best of all it is part of the action. If you see a girl (or 2 or 3) sitting, walk straight up to her and start negotiating. They are all (99%) freelancers. Don't try this in Bangkok or other parts of the country unless you can recognize a bargirl blindfolded from 1000 meters distance.
I'm always having a great time, eating behind a respectable touristfamily who don't have clue about what is happening around them. They think they are eating in a shoppingmall, but they are eating in a whorehouse.
So I guess foodcourts are the middleground in this (ongoing) discussion. It's cheap. it's varied and it's (relatively) clean. Bon apetit!
