I know that some of this has been covered and have read many posts, which have been helpful, but I would like some definitive answers...I feel kind of lame because I have never been out of the country except for trips to Tiajuana, Mexico... What should one do before he goes on a trip like BKK. 1. Passport 2. Shots come into mind but is there anything else that I really need to do... Thanks for your advice in advance...

Some things to take with maybe... I always have more than 1 credit card just in case one has any issue. I have always called up the credit card companies too, to let them know in advance that I was traveling to the LOS so they didn't get suspicious and put them on hold or anything while I was there. But then again, many members prefer travelers checks instead of plastic. You also might want to take some imodium AD with you, but you should know that having already been to Mexico. Bring your own condoms, because the Thai condoms aren't the best in terms of comfort. And a photocopy of your passport wouldn't hurt.

Good Ideas I will bring immodium although I have a really strong intestinal track... Maybe, from all of the Tobasco I've injested... I never thought about Traveler checks (total newbie)... I am beginning a list so this is helpful. I am expecting to be in BKK in the fall (I know down the road aways, but it gives me something to look foward to) when I plan to have my business sold and have money to play and live like a rock star for awhile... Also, What would you say the average stay is? I am planning on 15 days including travel...

15 days is fine to get your feet wet in BKK. There is no reason to use travelers checks. Worst case scenario you can always send money to yourself online via western union. Plenty of ATMs, Banks, Etc, everywhere in BKK, probably more then your hometown. No crazy shots required unless you go out into the jungle. You can buy most everything in thailand, but it is always good to take some Western condoms with you.

After 15 days, you probably won't want to leave. On-entry visa stamp is good for 30 days. Clothes off the street are dirt cheap, so don't bring much and buy stuff here, you can get an large extra suitcase for 800 baht to take all the stuff home you've bought. Get a bottle of good Scotch at the Duty Free Shop, and some cologne. In the main tourist areas, you can get everything else you need. Plenty of Tequila available in the bars.

Some suggestions FWIW, * Pasport & Photocopy * Medication - divide between hand luggage & suitcase - prescription & photocopy. * Padlock your luggage. Remove name tags before entertaining BGs. * Consider Hep B shot - I don't think anythong else is necessary unless trekking. * Minimal clothing, shoes - buy up big; but plenty of underpants. * Condoms, & Lube if you like. * get a local sim card for phone. *Make a schedule (which you won't stick to, but make one anyway) scheduling where you plan to go, and what you want to do. Get an idea how much it will cost. * Then; have enough money for Sanuk - tragic to run out * If you get a crook gut, consider a jab from a local doctor (hotel can arrange) rather than muck around with tablets. I've got a tough intestinal tract too, but copped it twice now. The jab had me fixed in a day, the tablets took nearly three..thus limiting Sanuk. * Have an 'out story' for clingy BG if you want to see them again eg: I go Pattaya two days - you can always cancel. Have a big one (and leave my girl alone - shes the pretty one with the long black hair, dark eyes & killer body. You will know her from the "hello, welcome hansum man" line she uses LOL) Hit the ground running! Cheers, Liam

Yeah Hep A and Hep B shots. They are fairly easy to get and prevent you from getting those infections. Hep B is in a large number of Asian's. It is a 3 shot cycle over a 6 month span so start now and by fall you will be good to go. Travelers checks are a thing of the past. You practically fall over ATM's every few feet.

If you don't have a passport, start on that immediately since it takes awhile (unless you pay an expidite fee). Make several copies of your passport and store in different places (wallet, luggage, etc). After you arrive, make some copies of the page with your entry visa stamp. Despite what some have said, travelers checks are definitely the way to go. Many banks will sell you travelers checks without a fee. Some credit cards will also let you get them without a fee. TC's get a better base exchange rate than cash, and after the check cashing fee, the net exchange rate is about the same as cash. Get them in $100 or $500 checks since there a small fee per check. Cash them in the big banks along Sukhumvit, but cash only one of them at the airport upon arrival to pay your taxi and first night fun (airport TC fees are higher). TC's are very cheap (or free) insurance against theft or loss. If you check any luggage on the plane, then it helps to indicate the destination hotel on your luggage tag in case they loose it. Leave plenty of room inside your luggage for knit shirts you will buy on the street, and only bring a few shirts with you. But bring all the other clothes you need with you. Make sure your hotel has an in-room safe, but never leave everything in the safe (carry one credit card with you when you leave the room). If you stay in BKK, I think the shots and mosquito repellent are not really needed. If you get mildly sick, go to a pharmacy and ask for advice (I recommend Boots). Some small and medium size hotels may try to charge you a 5% fee for paying by credit card, so get it in writing if you don't want to pay the surcharge, or bring enough TC's to cover the bill. Bring your own condoms, especially if you need a larger size. Read the threads on how to get a taxi at the airport. It helps if you bring a map of the hotel in Thai for taxi driver, which you can often get at the hotel web site. Always carry a taxi card with your hotel address on it (you can often get these at the front desk). When you are walking along Sukhumivt late at night, there may be tall attractive "women" with lots of makeup and big breasts (plastic) who approach you. Do not look at them. Keep on walking and pretend you don't see them. They are katoeys. Bring some decent athletic or walking shoes with you, since walking along some of the broken sidewalks is akin to hiking on a mountain trail. Learn how to travel on the BTS Skytrain and Subway on your first day, but you will still be doing a lot of walking in BKK where ever you go.

Hep A, and B, Thyphoid, diptheria/tetness, are the shots recommended. Travelers checks are still in. The best rates for changing money are $500 denomination travelers checks. I use my atm mostly, then a few $500 denomination travelers checks, some new $100 bills, and I'm covered. You're going to have so much fun, you can't even imagine.

ThaidUp is correct add in the hep A but it can be done in less then 3 shots and 6 months now. To be safe I take 3 debit cards, 2 credit cards and some cash. Don't bother with travelers checks to many ATM's including me To be safe before you leave photocopy all your cards front and back. Black out the photocopies of the back of the cards that show your signature and the three digit code upper right of your credit cards. On the back of the cards is often the number you need to call if lost. So if you loose them or they are stolen "who you going to call?" Best to have a copy of the numbers to call. Leave a copy at home with someone you can trust. If you really want to go the distance do as I do. I take two wallets, one gets left in the safe with most of my stuff. The second I take with me with just cash/photocopy of my passport/one bank card and some cash for the night. Wallet stays in my front pocket, if possible in a pocket with a zipper. You should be fine if you fallow the advice of the above posts. bimmher PS Remember to have fun
