Thanks to the fast and generous assistance already provided, I would like to try asking a couple of questions that should help with the pre-arrival type planning.

First, chances are this will be my only trip to Thailand, simply because I live in East Coast U.S., which makes the plane ticket cost over 1000 dollars (BEST price I have found so far is 1200, on Qatar). I am not rich, I am doing a bucket list type thing, a fantasy trip only affordable because of an unexpected and somewhat small inheritance (not enough for a car or a house, enough for a big fun trip and then a tv...). As such, should I plan a 2 week stay, or a 3 week? Is there enough to do for a single guy to enjoy THREE weeks in a foreign country, or would I go postal and end up in jail if I stayed that long?

Second, I have applied for a passport but probably won't get it until mid to late December. So, question is, should I fly to Bangkok in January or February (or later?). The Fodors website actually advises against going during January, something about holidays. Any advice?

Third, I already need to buy a complete new set of clothes. Does it make sense to fly to Bangkok with barely anything, and buy my clothes there? And if so, do they have big men's clothes, since I know the asian folks do way better keeping their weight down, so they don't have a lot of big people buying clothes... I am talking about casual shirts like polo shirt, khaki pants, etc.

Thanks for any reply to this post. khop Kuhn mah khrap.

Definitely buy casual clothes off the street, negotiate prices.

I'd advise at least 3 weeks, or however long you can afford. For example, I've been here over 7 years. The Thais make it simple, if you can pay then you can stay.

Must Dos:

In Bangkok

Poseidon Model Lounge
Nana Plaza: Rainbow 4, Rainbow 1, Rainbow 3
Soi Cowboy: Baccara, Sharks, Tilac

In Pattaya,

Walking Street:

Angel-Witch
Baccara
Happy
Airport
Iron Club
Babydolls

Soi 6: An afternoon stroll

Soi LK Metro: Devils Den

The real problem, I fear, is going to be your having to accept that this will be your only trip (as things stand). Do pay serious heed to the legions of posts here about falling in love and those teary-eyed farewells at the airport. Let me warn you in all seriousness that Thai girls are the world's biggest thieves. They steal your heart in broad daylight from right under your nose, ha ha. So watch it.

I was struck by what you said in your other thread about not getting a hug before talking to girls in your home state. Given this reality Thailand is paradise because, like that famous One Night in Bangkok song, the devil is walking right next to you : a perfect stranger with a sexy tight body could hug you in the middle of Sukhumvit at 2 am. Yes, they steal your heart at dead of night too.

Since you are travelling half way round the world I suggest you stretch your trip for as long as you can. The Visa thread on this forum could throw light on what you would require. As for timing, if you wait out the holiday season, Feb / March is good.

Shopping is che-e-e-e-e-ap and of surprisingly good quality, specially the clothes. Oversize clothes are available in most malls. A sales girl in one of the malls once joked with me that even Thais are bloating in size because of a profusion of fast food and that's why oversized clothes are seen everywhere.

I have to disagree with a poster here who suggested buying clothes from street vendors. My experience is they are a rip-off. Good quality clothing, and very cheap at that, is to be had inside malls like Platinum, MBK, Big C, even Robinson.

go 3 weeks, and go in February.

I have always found the weather, and prices, to be ideal - earlier, and you are hitting left-over high-season.

Around February you should be getting great prices (talk to SaucyTime about bookings) and the weather is just about perfect.

Oh, and all of KaymanX's warning's stand.

Cheap clothes, to last you for the trip, but not much longer, can be had from street stalls if you bargain well. My first trip, I had a gym bag full of stuff, and came back with a suitcase.

Ideally, you don't need more than 5-7 days worth of underwear and socks (if you wear sneakers), 2 swim suits, some polo shirts - and, at most one pair of slacks or clean jeans, and 2 button-down shirts.

Mr. Massage - there's way more than 3 weeks of stuff to do in Thailand.

You should check out BKK - lots of tourist sites to see as well as the girls. And Pattaya - check out those gals thaiaficionado mentioned. Phuket is great too - beaches or sailing or various activities + a different bar scene from BKK. I also enjoyed Koh Samui - more chill. Chiang Mai is beautiful, so you should take at least a few days to go there - you can find girls or bring one.

Even asians go to BKK to go shopping. Buy there. My father from the US only buys clothes in asia - he gets them all tailor made every 3-5 years.

Used to be, but not much difference any more. As a big dude you'll probably have much more choice is the States, probably cheaper as well.

The quality of clothes from market stalls is very poor, the look and fit even worse...

From US to this side of the world, you need at least 3 weeks to enjoy.

Yes, you can find cheap or decent price of clothes from street vendors/market stalls (but you have to know how to bargain..)...even at MBK you have to bargain. When you go into the malls here, the price is the same in US or more expensive than US. When they have a big sale, then may be you pay about the same in US.

If you want to shop here then you need few days for that. For first timer, of course you will need to find where to go to shop like where MBK...then you will get lost in MBK for the rest of the day...

Big C and Tesco Lotus are like Walmarts.

Does not matter now that it get into Winter here....I wear short and t-shirt/polo shirt here all year long....so dont pack Winter clothes.

A lot of people go here to take care their medical needs too like annual checkup and see dentist...

Enjoy your trip.........you will want to come back again and again after this trip...

Seriously guys, thank you all for the replies. Lots on the forum, and I have an additional person being very kind in mail as well. I appreciate it greatly.

You all have convinced me, so the trip is now a full 3 week trip. If you have reasons to strongly encourage me to cut down to 2 weeks, go ahead and state why, but unless such reason comes to my attention, 3 weeks is now what I am pursuing purchasing airfare and such at.

While the response to the Jan or Feb question isn't so strong, I think I am in agreement with those who suggest February, so I am going to shoot for that. I know I want to be there NOW, but, I also want to get there and feel like I have done due diligence in trying to arrange as cheap and planned a trip as I can get. So, February, three weeks.

I am now pretty much only stuck with the clothes thing. If you read the advice, it's rather mixed. For one thing, I have NO experience with haggling other than my car, and that experience ended with me getting raped, drawn, and quartered. So, that has me concerned. But, MBK has a great website (in English too!), and wow, I don't even like shopping and yet I want to go there. Haha. Then again, I wear size 48 pants and 3XL shirts (American size, DANG if I know what that would translate to in other nation's sizes, probably to "Yo Mama is So Fat" jokes). I guess with the trip not likely to occur until February, I have plenty of time to ponder over this. But, if anyone happens to read this AND go to Bangkok before then, I would have BIG heart moments for you if you happen to check and see if any body is selling those size clothes. 8^)

Since I am staying for three weeks, should I be looking into getting a serviced apartment? I THINK that means I'd be paying for a week more than I stay (one month rent, right?), but would it still be cheaper than 20 nights of a hotel? And, Daffyduck recommended I speak to SaucyTim, and if Mr. Saucy would mail me, I'd love to chat with you about the hotel/apartment, but I don't want to impose upon you if you're not here.

And last, TVN brought up something that I was pondering about... I have no dental insurance, so I have been less than wonderful in maintaining my teeth. I brush, floss, mouthwash, etc., but the actual "see the dentist every 6 months" doesn't happen. Is getting dental procedures in Bangkok a good idea, or since I will be (desperately) enjoying the company of working girls, is that a bad idea from an STD stand point? Many reviews on this site has mentioned girls coming up and face-f***ing your mouths with theirs (and I am not exactly disgusted by that thought), so dental procedures AND that? Hummmmm.

Sorry if I am overly "needy" in my posts, but I assure you I am greatly enjoying and thinking about the replies I am getting. I am probably going to enjoy the preparation of the trip almost as much as the trip itself. Unless I get a GFE-TG, in which case, Daaaaaaaaaymn.

And once again, learning my new phrase, khop khup mah khrap.
