Sorry can't help on the US side of things, but in case anyone is interested I could not play them on UK region DVD player. However I could put them in my laptop CD-ROM and copy the .dat file over to the system rename it .mpg and play it just like a normal movie file All I need now is a bigger hard drive, just how do I word the request form to the IT department, i wonder. We've got a bunch that we bought while in Thailand. Some yes, some no. Also my DVD player was altered to play all zones. That is one concern. The other is whether the DVD / VCD is recorded for PAL or NTSC format. American (zone 1) players are NTSC if I recall correctly. So you'd have to make sure that the thing played Zone 1 (NTSC) format or ALL ZONES (NTSC) format. There is no reason why a Zone 1 DVD wouldn't be in the correct format, but it's quite possible that an ALL ZONES one might not be. And Zone 3 won't work for you anyway unless your machine has been modified.

mykal: I have no problems playing VCD's bought from Hong Kong and Thailand. Unless somehow the VCD was messed up to begin with!! ha ha ha ha!!! But, you should have no problems playing them, as long as your dvd player supports vcd format. As seubeu pointed out, DVD's are another story. Unless your dvd player has been altered or you have a universal one, then you will not be able to play dvd's outside of region 1 or universal/all regions. The dvd's I bought in Thailand were region 3. Hense, they do not work in my dvd player bought in the U.S.

VCD has no regional code and is encoded using MPEG technology. Hence you should be able to play VCD bought from Thailand in American VCD player (or other players for that matter) As for DVDs there are 2 major places to buy them: 1. If you buy of major stores, like CD Warehouse Most DVDs here are region 3, so you can not play on other regional coded DVD players (unless the players have been modified to bypass regional code test) 2. If you buy them off the street(e.g. Silom road) These are hacked to have regional code 0 (that means it can be read from any DVD) One thing you have to consider when buying a DVD is what kind of Video encoding is.. Generally DVD readers in USA use NTSC (National Television System Committee) while some countries (Europe, and Thailand perhaps?) use PAL--Phase Alternation Line (European TV format) . If you are using an NTSC DVD Player to play PAL Disc, you'll not be able to view it (unless you have a converter) since it'll show as grey lines.

Let me be more specific. I have a standard DVD player bought in the states I asssume to be the zone config for the states. It did not advertise mp3 or any other kind of capability. It will however play CD's. So do you need the type of American player that will play mp3s or do you just need a normal DVD player? Mykal

Maybe I repeat some things already said: VCD In Thailand all VCDs are in NTSC, so will without any problem run on a NTSC system in the States. No regional coding as with DVDs. Visitors from most european countries are out of luck. If the VCD doesn't work or has flaws, you would have the same problem if playing it here. DVD As said, most pirated DVDs are encoded as 'ALL' zones so you should have no problems using them in USA. Look for the 'ALL' logo on the box. Also, imported original DVDs can be bought in Thailand with region 1, as most (if not all) DVD players in Thailand are delivered from the factory as 'all region'. So here it doesn't actually matter what region the DVD is in. DVDs with region 3 are usually Thai undertitled or come with a Thai soundtrack option. But again, you can't use them (region 3) in the USA unless you have a modified player. A word of warning if you buy pirated (concert) DVDs. Don't always believe the features (5.1 / DTS) on the box. Let's say you're lucky if the features are reallly included. Prices for pirated DVDs are about 150 baht in Panthip Plaza and cheaper (around 80-100 baht) on markets as Klong Thom. There are also another variety of pirated DVD called DVD-9 which are a little more expensive (200 baht) but should deliver better quality and features (5.1 / DTS) as promised. I have no experience with them .....

mykal: Not sure what your question is?? Is is playing vcd's or mp3's??? My suggestion is that you go to Best Buy, Circuit City, Good Guys or even Fry's and ask them about your dvd model and whether it can play mp3's or not. Because some dvd players can and some can not. I am sure they should be more equiped to answer that question then us. But, it's not like most of the people that work there are not "L.C.D" = Lowest Common Demoniator. ha ha ha!! Hope you find the answer to your questions.

All region DVD, that I bought in Thailand don't work in the 2 DVD players I have ,Toshiba & Pioneer. But they do play on my computer DVD player. The quality was poor. Not worth the 100 baht I paid for them.

Well, on the street, there are 2 types of DVD quality sold. One is DVD copied from not original source and the other copied from master DVD. You can ask them...."Is it Master Yet?" or in Thai "Master Rae Yang Krab?" If not master, do not buy it.
