Supaporn - In general, a good idea but sometimes the pricing is a bit strange and one may find one brand or type of product cheaper here than in the US, or other places for that matter and sometimes actually more expensive.  The important thing is to know what you want and have a price list from back home so comparisons can be made.

Multi-lingual manuals, even for products sold in regular shops are becoming more and more popular with Sony and Casio seeming to lead the trend.  But again, it can be spotty.  But I have yet to have a problem of asking to see the manual and being refused.  If they have a display model, there is a manual and a box that goes with it somewhere in the shop.

But, one thing that can't be beat is that one can find the latest cutting edge products that aren't available anywhere else yet.  Unfortunately some of those cutting edge products possibly will end up on the side of the cut that gets thrown away 6 months later.  ;)

That having been said, if anyone here is interested in a particular product, PM me and I'll look around and see what prices are here, both the SMRP that is usually printed on the product container somewhere, which is what one would pay at the airport, as well as what the actual prices available in most retail shops are.

bommarang,
yes, i've found that newly released products are way more expensive in thailand than the US and Japan. but the older/2nd generation models may be cheaper.
knock-offs are cheap, but are usually copies from older electronics.

When I was in Singapore, things seemed much much cheaper than in the US.

But then again your questions was not about Singapore was it??? 5555555

Actually it's just an FYI on Singapore 13 years ago. I don't know how it is now. BUT in a very short time I will be able to tell you about the prices between the 3. US, Singapore, and LOS as I live in 1 and will be visiting the other 2.

On my last trip I bought a Vivitar digicam at Pantip for as little as Baht 2250. I don't know how this price compares with other countries. Yes, it's an original in company pack and is producing terrific pictures

Smegma,

good recommendation...cathay photo...they give you a good good price and the range of stuffs are wide BUT here is a tip.....if you have a local - asian looking friend in singapore get him to follow you to this place.

cathay photo gives a good discount but depending on who you are. i've come across this...a 'farang' was buying a camera bag and the shop guy gives him a 20-30% discount...i was surprised about this caz the previous day i bought the same bag for 50% discount! honestly speaking students producing their student cards gets more as what i was told. bummer!

i do not know if this really applies but just for safe reason...get someone to help.

Smegma, how long ago did you get your Nikon F5? how much was it back then? just want to cross check with the prices that i have now. the last time i checked the AF-S lenses were kind of pricier in Singapore than it is in Malaysia...same goes for the high-end camera bodies.

you're a nikon user?

cheers man!

It was 3 years ago, and it came to slightly over US1.9k, close to 2k, but I do not remember exactly now if closer to 1.9 or closer to 2.

By email, a friend with an Asian sounding name and I, we both got the same prices. Though you are 100% right about the price differences for farangs if just walking into the shop.

Delta, where are prices now for the F5?

BTW, my old lenses that I use with my 20 year old F3 are sharper than the new autofocus ones that I have for the F5. I just hate that.

Smegma,

i'm checking on the prices right now...will let you know once i have gotten it...and will make a cross check with Malaysian prices as well.

tell me about it! old lenses are somewhat better than the new ones...i still personally think...built quality as well as optics. due to one reason...older lenses are made with glass and not the new hybrid glasses (special plastic and glass moulded)

sadly to speak...i had to give up some of my prime lenses...due to some unavoidable circumstance. i just hope that wherever 'she' is now, 'she' is well taken care of. *sigh...sniff sniff*

Delta...
Yeah it kind of went FAR FAR away from the original intent. Partially my fault, I am a car buff.

We were both wrong about the horsepower of the Porsche. It has just over 600 not 500 horses.

But I yanked this off a performance testers website.

The 911 Carrera GT .
From a standing start, it reaches 124 mph in just 9.8 seconds en route to a top track speed of more than 184 mph.

To achieve that performance, a powerful V10 engine - developing 608 hp (SAE) - to an unladen weight of just 3,045 lbs.

Hi Guys,

I'm planning on a long holiday in June/July and have decided to shoot a lot of photos digitally (for the first time. I usually shoot film).

I only have so much storage capacity with me and I don't plan on bringing my laptop... so...

Does anyone know if I might be allowed to connect my camera to an internet café machine to upload the pictures to my server or does certain photo shops (as is the case where I come from) simply offer to burn your stuff on a CD directly from the Smart Media or whatever you show up with ?

Thanks.

DryBorg
