Yep thats right. And is the easiest way to spot a quality shirt Small detail that speaks volumes. So if you go to the trouble of buying a tailored shirt insist on this. In the UK (Jermyn St and Saville Row) you wouldnt need to, but here you must.

Walking into a tailor.. how do I choose material? Most of my dress shirts come from Banana Republic, Brooks Brothers with a couple of Thomas Pink shirts thrown into the mix (those I KNOW are of high-quality)...

Well its up to your preference. If you like easy-iron then why not stick to a poly-cotton mix. If you, like me prefer classic cotton you generally have a choice on density. Obviously choose depending on the climate. Egyptian cotton suffices for me for lightwight shirts.

checking the Thomas Pink website - they show shirts available labeled 170's-referring to the yarn count; I'm guessing this is cotton? I'm curious as to how this numerical designation aligns with suits labeled as 100's, 120's, etc. when they are made of wool/cashmere? Charles Tyrwhitt by comparison offers "superfine 180's" and "sea island 140's" and refers to them as a twill (also cotton?). Some shirts are poplin, two-fold cotton, cotton/wool blends... uhhh - seems like I need a degree in textiles... Would tailors in BKK carry these fabrics? or are we talking about considerably lower quality? If they do, would the cost be considerably different from their normal fabrics? (<1000baht/shirt?) One tailor I spoke with who seemed semi-legit was Jackies on Soi 8 Sukhumvit. Anyone try them before?

Bigdawg, OK - Here's your start towards your "degree in Textiles". The "super" 100's or 120's or 170's refers to the fibre fineness and not the yarn count. You can have the same count of yarn ( say 2/48NM ) made from 90's fibre and another yarn of the same count made of 120's fibre - But the feel and drape of the fabric with the finer fibre would be far superior ( and also more expensive ). Cotton yarn is designated in "English Count" or Ne whereas Wool / Cashmere count is designated in "Metric Count" or NM. Metric Count x.59 will give you the equivalent English count.

Charles Tyrwhitt...now there's a fine shirt maker. (pron like 'Spirit') The numerical designation for yarn is indeed similar to the suit designation. Please check out this link http://www.ravistailor.com/customtailor/ Had a few shirts from this guy also, absolutely no problems and they know their stuff......good info on yarn counts......

I have been very satisfied with the shirts I had made here: http://www.tajmahalclothiers.com/ I had ten long sleeve, and ten short sleeve made. The selection of 100% cotton fabrics was very nice, the service top nothc, and the quality of the resultant shirts very satisfying. Plus, they are right next to Nana - convenient Harry Edit in: I have just tested the URL above by clicking on it, and it takes you to the correct web-site. Try it, or cut and paste the URL.

Harry (hzink) I'm very much interested in the tailors you used for your shirts, however, the link you posted doesn't work. Perhaps you mispelled it? Thanks in anticipation for posting the correct link or name of the establishment. Greek

Taj Mahal clothiers is the correct name, there current business card doesn't list a web site. I had 4 shirts made this last trip, and am very satisfied with their work. Had an oportunity to talk with the owner. Was totally caught by supprise. He started as one of the tailors outside the air base in ubom I was at during the war, then he went to udorn when that base closed. This many years later, he is in business with an international clientel, travels to europe for fittings 3 times a year, and both his sons have shops. He had a very quality selection on materials, and does excellent work. I highly recommend him.
