I was in BKK recently, and had a couple of suits and some shirts made by "Modi Milan" in New Petchburi Rd. I thought that the overall deal, and also the clothes were excellent - I would be glad to hear other opinions, as I'm going back to BKK again shortly.

My two satang: Whatever you do, avoid the one-day packages. Be insistent on what you what in terms of fit and style, and make them get it right even if you have to keep going back for fittings and alterations. Walk in with a good idea of exactly what it is you want, so you don't end up just staring at fabrics and overbuying because everything is so unbelievably inexpensive. Get two pair of trousers with your suits, because the jackets last longer than the pants. Get at least one solid grey suit, because you can also wear the trousers with almost any blazer/sport coat. It's very hard to find good shirtmakers here. I used to go to a small shop on Soi Nana, but they were so inconsistent and started doing really crap work. Best bet is to get a really good shirt from Tyrwhitt or similar, then take it to Perry's to copy. And again, be very insistent that they get the details right. Perry's will cost more than other places, but worth it. Raja's is best is you are relatively trim and tall. Much like Bobby himself. They are great marketers --you arrive and are greated warmly, given a drink, Bobby remembers some small detail about you from last time he saw you, then you have to cool your heels for a half hour til they get back to you. What do you do in the meantime to occupy yourself? Of course, you look over the fabrics. So you end up ordering more than originally intended. They have their whole routine down quite well, particularly as Bobby has an amazing memory for people, but if like me you are more round than long, look elsewhere. I bought four suits from them, and I never wear them because they're absolute, 100% crap; cheap material (my mistake), the fit is lousy, and they don't hold up. I think they are much better marketers than tailors, though obviously others feel differently. YMMV. One option for inexpensive suits, though perhaps not the best material, is A. Song on Charoen Krung 38 near the Oriental. Not to be confused with similarly named shops owned by others in his family nearby. Not the best quality fabrics, and he just kind of stands there mumbling and makes you do all the work (like many a TBG!), but the one thing he does do well is get the fit right, even if it takes you several fittings. There's also a small shop on the side of the Shangri-La, Alex's, where they have some nicer fabrics including Loro Piana, though they are not cheap at all - quoted me THB 50K for Loro Piana.....I'm still laughing. The guys there are a bit full of themselves, I don't particulary enjoy dealing with them but they make a pretty good suit. They take about a month to finish a suit because they are very finicky on making the jackets just so, and claim to have their own guy who is very good instead of using the same sweatshops as every rip-off shop in town. If your body is difficult to fit, you don't mind the wait and can get them to give you a decent price, you might want to go here or somewhere similar for one or two "special" suits, and someplace like A. Song for three or four "everyday" suits to finish out the wardrobe. Nickerman's in the basement of the Landmark Hotel is another shop to try for everyday suits, they're usually pretty responsive to what you want in terms of fit. Again, not the highest quality fabrics.

In addition I can recommend a tailor named Thai Square Fashion located in Rama 1 Road, Pratumwan. I have been there in January 2002. At that time I stayed in a really expensive hotel (booked trough travel agent in Europe) at Silom Road. I asked the receptionist lady (a lady, not a girl!) for the direction to one of the tailors that advertise package deals in the Thai Air inflight magazine; as she couldnt figure that one out, she proposed to call some tailor she knew to pick me up. First I was a bit vary and scared, but everything went well (maybe because of the hotels's reputation?). They took me there and we agreed upon 2 suits (each having two pairs of trousers) and four shirts for about 15,000 Baht. I went there for fitting one more time and shortly before my departure a messenger brought the clothes to my hotel. The material is fine and the quality is perfect as well. In December 2003 I had then a quick visit at Needles King in Sukhumvit, but unfortunately the material is poor, the sewing so-so - cannot recommend that one. In October 2004 I went back to Thai Square Fashion and found out that the guy in charge was bargaining pretty hard and I got a lot less than I got 3 years earlier (I noticed one of the service staff, a burmese boy, was still working there). Still material and quality is fine and from the type of customer I met there it seems its a bit more upscale. The place is clean, spacious and well organized. Unfortunately their website is down for a long time by now. You can walk there from MBK and Jim Thompsons House is not too far away.

I used Raja's right near NEP. Bobby was a nice guy and so far happy with the suite and shirts. Time will tell how they last. Only prob I had was I lost a bit of weight in Cambo while sick. Went back and the pants were to big, the question was take them in or did I expect to gain the weight back. Took the middle road a little taken in. bimmher

Another good option to get custom tailors clothes done, is at the Ambassador Hotel, The name of the shop is BEST TAILORS. Its been the only existing tailor shop in that alley (the one right opposite DICKENS PUB) for 15 years. All the rest have moved to other locations. THe prices are fair enough. For example, got different shirts made....The ones from Egyptian cotton cost 1000 baht, 65%, 25% Cotton Mixed with MacroFabric costs 500-600 baht, depending on volume, and Also the Fabrics for the Suiting material is really appropriate. Some of their materials are sure - that no other tailor shop around sukhumvit has it. But thats very rare. He asked me to recommend some of the guests whom require shirt, pant or suits....A very interesting place to check it out. Ask for the Boss name Mr. Al...he's been working in the tailoring field for around 30 years, very experienced friendly chap who used to work for the Utapao Base during the old days.

I would like to continue my comment given above: One of my workmates was in Koh Samui for a fortnight in January (his first trip, only holiday). He came back reporting on his great deal - 550 Euro for 1 coat, 3 suites and 8 shirts made to measure. Last he week he reported that he had to arrange (expensive) alterations on the suites by a local tailor. Then I had a closer look on his shirts: The embroidered monogram makes it look unique, wristbands and collar are too soft, a very simple button panel and at all the workmanship seems poorish. So when I came home that day I had a look at those shirts made by Thai Sqaure Fashion (Rama I Rd) and those by Needle King (Sukhumvit, back in 2003 there was a special offer for 4 Shirts for 1800 Baht). Needle King: - The material inside the wristbands and collar starts crumpling and crinkling - The buttons are rather loosely sewed on - The collars and the material of two of them shows signs of abrasion from washing and ironing Thai Square Fashion - No signs of material fatigue from washing or ironing - Double button panel - The buttons match a little bit with the colour of the shirt (e.g. the buttons of the blue shirt are a tiny little bit blueish; the yellow and the grey one do not have same coloured buttons) - Better fit at all So my anger about the higher price was blown away. Like always in life - better quality is more expensive and the given advice to stay away from the package deals gains truth once more.
