Wolfman,

There are 2 sets of criteria for a phone:

1) Style
2) Function

If Style is your driving force, then Nokia, the smaller (and more expensive) the better.

If Function rules your world, then the cheapest NEW phone (around 3500 baht, with included minutes) is the hot tip.

In 2001, I bought a DPrompt package with Alcatel 300 phone: all plastic, and not very stylish, but rock solid, and small enough to fit in a shirt pocket.  It has, IMO, GREAT software (user interface), and it just seemed intuitive and simple.

Succumbing to the need for 'features', when I returned home I bought a Sony-Ericsson T200 World Phone, which I can use here in the US, as well as in Thailand.  It has graphics and all kinds of features, ALL OF WHICH ARE HARD TO USE.  Sure, I can use the same phone here and in LOS, but I will probably go back to my Alcatel ugly-phone in Thailand, because it is SO comfortable and well thought-out.

So try a few phones, decide what your criteria are, and choose from there.

Do most phones now come standard with "predictive text" input for typing sms messages (so you can just type the first couple of letters and phone will fill out rest)?  I like my ancient ericsson t28s, but that's the one feature I miss.  How about voice dial (just say the name); couldn't live without that.

I'm a dinosaur and for me a phone has one use only and that's to make phone calls preferably ones where you can actually hear and the other person can hear you. Weight and battery life also matter but beyond that any phone will do. I just don't need my phone to give me face or take pictures or play music.

If there are any Ericsson freaks out there I always see t28 and t29 models secondhand in MBK for very cheap. Last generation Nokia too.

Beware on new phones. I spotted some counterfeits while I was there last time. Take out the battery and look at the printed label under it on the body of the phone. If the printing is smudged or looks blocky or if the label is peeling then it's probably bunk. Also look at the battery contacts on the unit. If they've started corroding it's fake most of the time.

I concur with VJ.

Have this Sony/Ericcson T66, the smallest and lightest phone around. Not because I like to show off with it, has no color display, no polyphonic tunes, no Java games, etc. It is small and light, and has good quality transmission. That's what I need in a phone.

I hope its user interface is better than my T200 - which is also small and light...
