People who learn Thai at AUA swear by it. I guess after enduring it ... there is no other way. They say that after 800 hours you will speak very well. I think anything you invest 800 hours you must do decently well. Problem with AUA is that students do not talk. But just sit and listen to conversation betwen the Thai teachers. They say this is the natural way to learn -like children do. I do not dispute that it may be the best method. But it must be also the most boring one. Anyone has gone to AUA.

I would not recommend somchart. I signed up last sept for 40 hours for 8,000 baht, the owner definately told me I could complete this within two years. At the time I only had 12 hours meaning to take some more at new year. I asked the owner about the need to book for the new year but she said not busy then so no need . However they were so busy in early Jan that they could not get me in until the last couple of days I was there. Here we are coming up to another trip so I thought I would email her this time to book, she tells me my time has run out as it was for a year. Very expensive lessons for me. She tells me that from the start of this year she has changed it to must complete the hours within six months, but I know some people who seem to think they were told 12 months. I would avoid this place. teachers are good but the owner is not-peter

How the hell you can pick up thai by just listening to 2 teachers speak about crap for 2 hours, what the hell do they talk about, the stupid arse sitting in front of them paying 300baht and hour to listen to them call him a stupid arse for 800 hours. The way I figure, I have listened to my missus talk for, lets say 2 hours a day, for ... that makes 4017 hours and I still don't know crap.

I think the easiest and fastest (any also more enjoyable way!) way to learn Thai is to stay in Thailand for 6 months to 2 years with a live-in THai girlfriend who doesn't even know a word of English at all. This way you pick up Thai pretty fast. Ask BK !

Yes, Pussylover69, wise words ... I am fluent in Thai speech but have never ever used a book or went to school. Reading and writing I learned of course with the help of a book. Getting around in Thai language took me around 6 months by being among Thai people (Thai style apartment/ restaurants / non english speaking TGF). After nine years, still learning ...... every day! Some of my friends stay here for 4-6 years but speak spartan Thai because they are with Enlgish speaking friends/ co workers and live in apartments filled with English speaking persons. But also, some people pick up faster than others ... I don't think there is a best method ... it all depends on your talents and attitude ....

NMax My thoughts as well but according to HS in another thread.. "Currently, at AUA main branch, Ratchadamri (which is the only AUA Thai program in BKK), they are using the Advanced Language Growth (ALG) method, as distinct from the old J. Marvin Brown books/tapes. In ALG, the idea is that to speak without a foreign accent, you must listen (for a LONG time) and NOT try to speak Thai. Their levels AT 1-10 consist of about 200 hours each of mainly listening, and interacting with a 2 person team of teachers. After about level 5, some reading and writing are introduced, but you are STILL discouraged from speaking Thai. This is at about the 1000 hour point, or 6 months of full time study. As you can see, this is quite a committment, although it is only about 92 baht per hour. Sitting through 8 hours of dialog per day is, for me, challenging in terms of staying awake. Even the teachers find it difficult to expect students to refrain from speaking Thai for a year in BKK, and in practice, the 'rules' are bent quite a bit. Also, at last survey, Levels AT 5-10 were a combined class (guess why!), and not well attended. Still, if you have a chance to chat with David Long, the program administrator, you will find that he speaks Thai in a manner indistinguishable from a native Thai. Such proficiency is the supposed reward for following ALG. I find that 2-3 hours a day, as is convenient, are sufficient to get some benefit. The flexibility of AUA is its best asset, and they have classes 12 hours a day M-F, and a few hours on Saturday as well. Since we're on this forum, it might not hurt to mention that a significant benefit of attending AUA is social: Babes galore! The English curriculum accounts for 95% of the school's attendance, and there are zillions of Thai and Japanese cuties studying. Japanese account for a large percentage of the Thai classes as well. " I think because there are many Thai & Japanese cuties studying there, may make this program work;) Just stop at Starbucks first. On second thought, sounds like a good place to open a Starbucks right next to AUA.

One more thing, Does anyone know what they are talking about at AUA? For all I know they could just be sitting up there belittling the entire class and getting paid for it. "Look at these morons paying us per hour to talk about them" 555 all the way to the bank
