This is not correct. No "eye" sound in Pattaya, I see this mistake a lot. Somehow people hear it that way, not sure why. Put-tuh-ya is more like it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xyGKBlaXCFw Yeah, you're right (see above YouTube link, from the Belgian singer). Online pronounciation "aids" by badly pronouncing Farangs don't make it much easier, do they: http://www.howjsay.com/index.php?word=pattaya Seems that "PAT TAY YAR" is a close approximation... ... but as I said "(I'm trying for closeness and differences of pronounciation - we could split hairs over details here) " Really, what matters is that it is NOT pronounced as most of the illiterates mispronounce it : "Patt-yah"

I have made several attempts at learning Thai from books for the past ten years of my travels to LOS but I am besieged with a poor memory which has made it near impossible for me. I have not progressed beyond remembering numbers and a handful of Thai words and phrases. I have never tried one-on-one lessons from a Thai teacher as my trips are always short. I like BK's post regarding teachers who teach one-on-one on Skype. Thinking of giving it a try. Has anyone tried any of them?

Looks like that youtube video was deleted. Government to demand takedown of sex-trade spoof The government plans to ask YouTube to remove a video poking fun at the Thai sex industry. The clip is a parody of a commercial for the Rosetta Stone language learning software. The spoof was shown last weekend on Saturday Night Live, a US weekly satire show. In the video, foreigners show interest in learning phrases like "How much?", "Is that for the whole night?" or "How can I take off your clothes?" in Thai. Culture Minister Sonthaya Khunploem said Monday the Culture Watch Centre is working with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to remove the video. The government will also tell the US Embassy the spoof is tarnishing Thailand's image and will ask it to explain this to Saturday Night Live's producer, he said. The parody has drawn many negative responses from both Thais and foreigners. Most Thai internet users were not impressed with the video, saying the joke is too harsh and not at all funny.
