Did you learn by mimicking the speakers, did you learn to read and write (in Thai script) first? or did you use transliteration instead?

Here are some ideas for you...

I actually picked up a book - tape combo, but after the first chapter I went for the 'live' approach.

When I heard that the average Thai conversation exists of not more than 1,000 words, I started to learn and in about six months was able to have a decent long conversation in different subjects.

Then I picked up a book and learned to read and write.

A combination of living in local Bangkok areas and only Thai speaking live-ins enabled me to learn Thai without books or school attendance.

Started with a Thai family I lived with in California, but that was nothing compared to what I learned when I picked up a book & learned to write it. Then I moved to LOS & BANG, I was knee deep in the hoopla. If people didn't understand my lack of tone I'd write it down & they would be shocked that I could read & write but wasn't such a good speaker.
After about 4 years I was fluent enough to have Thais believe I was Thai on the telephone.

Learning to read...and, ideally, right, is essential.

Any idiot who claims speaking Thai is "simple" clearly hasn't learned it beyond a few "talking monkey" phrases that are always sure to get praise from Thais.

To say that any human language is less complex and capable of subtlety than any other is so incredibly racist, not to mention ignorant. Humans are humans, and all languages are equally complex if real, expressive, subtle communication is to take place.

Learning to read teaches you how words are *really* pronounced, which is essential if you intend to not come off as a hick buffoon. Make no mistake--Thais who speak various dialects with "shortcut pronunciations" KNOW what the real word is and can talk the correct way (read: according to the writing system) whenever they need to. If you can't speak the correct way (i.e. if you can't read), then you're always at the level of a pre-schooler...both in reality and in the Thais' eyes.

Well, I am one to claim to speak Thai and my skills are not limited to 'talking monkey' phrases.

But then again, I know the difference between 'right' and 'write' in any other language.

I claim it's simple because I think the sentence structure is simple and so are the words. It helps that I speak Vietnamese fluently for the tones though I can't read and write well. While it does help to be able to read, I'm much beyond monkey phrases for praise I can assure you that. You can speak a language well if you are immersed in it and practice a lot. That's why illiterate people can be effective communicators. Being able to read and write is not essential to speaking.
