I learned what I know about Thai language with one phrase book and one CD, then used it as much as possible during my trips.
My spoken Thai is poor, but yet it is good enought for me in everyday life in area where no one speak any english.
I have been to Issan alone many time and managed with not much problems.
So even if your Thai is far from good, just dont be shy to USE it and try to learn a few more words every day.
Even if your sentences arent perfect, as long as you try people will likely bear with you and will try to help.
And its good fun when you realise suddenly that the guy you are asking directions from does not understand you because he is from Burma and does not speak any Thai !
You want a challenge? Go try to order some stuff from the traditionnal Chinese pharmacy in Yaowarat, their Thai language is simply impossible to understand!
