Bros,
I’m thinking to take up a short language course in Thai when I’m in Bangkok and as I’m only going to be in the big apple for twelve days, I thought I would devote one whole week, during daytime, to grasp the basic of the language and learn rudimentary phrases.

My question is: does anybody know/recommend a school in BKK (located a nearby BST train station) that specializes in intensive short courses for falangs? Ideally with a website

Cheers

there's also one right at the Thong Lo BTS station, next to the 7-11 on the southern side sidewalk on Sukhumvit. Don't know about prices or methods or anything though.

Hey BK,
that's really helpful, cheers.

I'm going to get in touch with them soon - it's quite conveniently located, as I'll be staying in Suk, soi 11 - plus point is that the school is at walking distance from NEP.

I can put to practice what I learn at school with a BG or two; better still if they teach Isaan/Lao 5555

Cheers

Have studied at both of these schools. Wouldn't particularly recommend either one of them, but if you do study at Baan Phaasaa Thai, try to study with Jim (Yaovalak) the owner. She is a former NISA teacher and as I have copies of both schools texts, I can say the curriculum is very, very similar.

Nikko,

Months ago, you said that you were taking module 3 at UTL. Did you continue on through module 6? Do you recommend modules 3 and beyond? I took module 2 and found it to be intensive and very good. I'd like to sign up for module 3, but it covers mostly writing and reading. I'm more interested in speaking. Do you know of other schools comparable to UTL's module 2 with an emphasis on speaking, learning various sentence patterns, and teachers showing up prepared daily with lesson plans? I guess at worst, I can always take module 3 at UTL, but I wish the stingy building owner would crank up the a/c a bit. It's always stuffy inside, not to mention the jam packed elevators at lunch time.

Sputnik,

I am in module 6 now and have switched schools. The emphasis definitely changes to reading and writing from module 3 through 6 and I have not been impressed with 5 and 6-- mostly because I feel the teaching and approach have been for sh_t. By the end of 4 you know everything you need to, to read and write. But I don't feel my speaking has really improved beyond level 2 as a result of schooling-- it probably has gotten better but because I speak Thai everyday. There are at least 4 schools that are teaching what is really Union's curriculum--

Obviously,
Union and Unity, then Thai Language Achievement School (TLA) located at Silom at the Kamol Sakusol (sp?) building (set up by former Union teachers), think the website is tlaschool.com and Advance Alliance Academy (aaathai.com) located near the Chidlom BTS (set up by former Unity teachers). I really do not know of anyone else offering similar programs. I have heard mixed things about NISA. I had been hearing good things about a place called Ruan Phaasaa Thai near Asoke but they have either moved or closed. If I find someplace I'll post about it.
