This is... well... I guess in other threads in the Language Section I have made a lot of comments against this particular system--I am speaking here about the consonants only.
Mainly because, although it is the nearest thing we have to an official system, and is the one Thai use to translate place names and their own names, with so many repetitions and invisible differences (like factorx points out, there is a big difference between your Western k and ก (gor gai, which is more like g) ), I think it is unhelpful to someone not familiar with both alphabets and pronunciations.
As for the vowels here... probably more confusing. Essentially, we can use any system we like as long as people are taught it. But since the average person doesn't understand phonetic alphabets (such as this one or this one: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/1/15/IPA_chart_2005.png ) what can be done? We have to agree on a convention. This one, or another.
Or, we can keep doing what we do. Spelling any old way we want, know, or feel, and arguing about it. But maybe that's the creative way!

Basically, what we need is a system that allows us to transcribe a Thai word using the limited set of characters that we have. The soc.culture.thai system whether or not you agree with it, gives you this ability with the basic ASCII character set, which is the lowest denominator, and that does not require special fonts nor special characters. Of course, it will take a little getting used to as with any system. But with a consistent way of communicating Thai words, we will be able to spend more time arguing on other aspects rather than on this issue. The objective here is to agree on one system, and then sticking to it.

This makes sense. In Japanese there is the Hepburn system which provides a guide for writing the tones represented by Kanji and Kana characters into the Roman alphabet. There is also the Monbushō system which is the offical system taught in Japanese schools and used in the creaton of signs and romanized documents.
The Hepburn system is usually the system used in teaching Japanese to Westerners because the relationships in it are easier for a Westerner to adopt.
It would be nice if Thai had a similar system...

I couldn't agree more. We're always getting hung up on the transliteration issue, and it confuses everyone and starts more arguments that gets away from the meaning of more interesting phrases...
Yes, CS, it's sad a more accurate system for Thai and English has not been popularized or officialized.
But actually, the more I look at the vowel system in this soc.culture.thai system, I think it would work fine if someone uses it, at least to refer to, as you suggest. Why not? It's the vowels' sounds that usually give us so much trouble (so many of them in both languages), so this would be a good page to refer to when the question comes up!

And I could set up a reference page on this site to make easier to lookup, perhaps adding it as a menu item on the top of the page or in the posting mode. I could also have recordings done for each of the vowels, so that the newbies can hear each of the vowels pronounced by a Thai native speaker.

Nicfrenchy,,I didn't think you where saying anyone was wrong, I was merelystating my preferred option for the word.
The most common is definately Kung but I've been running into the Goong spelling more often lately.
