First, the unplugging idea is a good idea, especially during lightening stores. A bolt can hit one of the lines way down the road and blow the electronics out for miles. Utilities here are high. Electric is more expensive than USA. Land line phones the same or more. Cable/Sat TV the same as USA. Water is cheap. I average the following: Electric 5 > 6 K THB Phone 5K THB (Thai wife, explains that) Water 250 THB (Water yard & 8 showers day) UBC 1600 THB On the electric, running refrig, washer/dryer 3 air cons so VJ 6> 12 K THB must have his place like an igloo. You must watch out as some apt/condo will get the bill and mark it up with farang pricing.

Should have shown my math... My bill for electric is usally ~2500 a month for TV and PC on almost all day, and A/C on 9 hours a day to cool a small studio. It's common for a 2BR apartment to have 2 A/C units so a factor of x5 applies if both are run 24 hours a day (like in a hotel room as per the original post) plus a fudge factor for leaving multiple incandescent bulbs going all day. A/C units have a particularly noticeable loss of efficiency if not well maintained, i.e. leaking coolant or a dirty heat exchanger. Maintenance in rental properties in Thailand tends to be rare.

I paid between 10k to 14k for my 3 bedroom appartment. Living alone (maid came everyday but didn't stay overnight). I switched off the air condition when I was not there.

Either I got effcient air cons or you guys are getting screwed. I am running 2-3 most of the day & night and my electric bills are between 5> 6K. I think the condo/apt mark-up may be a factor here. I am direct billed by the Thai electric company.

Thanks Guys, I've heard of the ripp-offs by inflated rates and inaccurate meters. Some so bad that utility costs can exceed the monthy rent. Can anyone recommend apartments or condos where tenants are billed directly by the utility.

I thought I was getting screwed... until I figured it was the pumps for the pool. And my maid did use the washing and drying machines every single day. She didn'tlike to accumulate dirty clothes. Running the pool pumps was about 50% of the bill. Thus in reality, for comparison purposes I should have said 5 to 7k.

Yes, it does have its own private pool. As all units in that building do. There was also the very big communal pool... but when I had parties... we always preferred my unit's own private pool. A few brothers attended those glorious parties with the girls from you know where...... Yurune... sorry we were not such good friends then and I ddint invite you
