CJ, Would you please elaborate on your statement about ATM cards being unsafe. I understand about c.c. fraud and understand how they do it. But, I don't understand how they can f*ck with my ATM card (even if it's stollen) if they don't have my p.i.n number. Or don't they even need my card for this manner of fraud you are talking about? I think I'll go back to carrying travellers checks. I don't mind t.c's, I just hate carrying my passport around with me so I tend to cash them in the hotel and lose a small amount of money with hotels not offering the best exchange rate (which kinda irks me a bit)... but, compared to what I could lose on my c.c. or a.t.m card - we're talking peanuts. I think I'll opt for t.c's and lose that couple baht extra in the hotel. All this technology nowadays... and... it's bloody hopeless!

if your ATM card is also a Debit card, you are f_cked. It can be used the same as a credit card, but it draws cash not credit and the process to get this money back from the credit card is a lot more difficult than when a credit card is being used (your money vs. their money).

i've only used my C/C when booking a hotel in BKK and for flights to BKK,no probs. take enough money to last a few days and then use my ATM to get money when i need it. again no problems. hate T/C's.

I just realized i omitted an important word in my post that made it senseless! Should be: to get this money back from the credit card COMPANY is a lot more difficult than when a credit card is being used (your money vs. their money). i would suggest never using a debit card in BKK. credit cards and ATM cards are fine, but you CAN get into trouble with counterfieting. i really don't think you can do much about it. as i've said, the only time it happened to me was at the 5-star landmark, not in any of the questionable places i've used a card. cash is always king if you don't mind carrying it around..

zzzZ The only things I can use my a.t.m card for is: - sticking in the a.t.m machine and getting cash out & - when paying in a shop or restaurant that has those small hand held machines that swipe my card, I enter my p.i.n number and the money is instantly debited from my bank account. Does that make my a.t.m card a "debit card"??? My a.t.m card is just from my local bank... my c.c. is Visa. I won't carry cash... if I decide against my a.t.m card then I'll carry travellers checks.

I don't think so.. a debit card can be used anywhere you can use mastercard. it actually looks the same. for example, my ATM card is both debit and ATM. So I only use it in the ATM machine, never to pay at a hotel or a restaurant, for example..

ok, then I think my a.t.m card isn't a debit card. I certainly can never use it without entering my p.i.n into a machine. I should be safe with my a.t.m card then.

X, If you can use your card to get cash from the ATM machines AND make purchases, your card is an ATM/debit card. As mentioned by zzzZ and CJ, a debit card has significantly higher risk than a credit card. ÝFor example: ÝIf someone stole your credit card and charged $10,000 to it, depending on the card and/or bank, you may only be responsible for a small amount of the $10,000 (kinda like a deductable in an insurance claim.) ÝHowever, if it's a debit card, that $10,000 comes straight out of your account, it's 100% your money. ÝThe money lost due to these fraudulent charges are almost never recovered. ÝDepending on your bank, you may have to take 100% of the lost. Also, remember that you can dispute a charge made on your credit card by notifying your credit card company in writing and they will withhold and/or chargeback the amount from the merchant until the dispute is resolved. Ý Some of these gangs, particularly in SEA, are very sophisticated and they can rig the machines at the shops (if the shop or an employee of the shop is crooked) to record you PIN and other infomation on the magnetic strip on the back of the card. ÝThey will not need to possess your card to make duplicate cards and these fraudulent cards look just like the real one, including the hologram image on some of the cards. I have been in the banking industry for over 10 years and I do not use debit cards. ÝI always make sure that my ATM card is only an ATM card and I have never owned a debit card.

MM3, Thanks for the explanation of what a debit card is. Yes I can make purchases in shops with my a.t.m card, so it must afterall be a debit/atm card. I don't think we have any other type of atm card here. I had honestly never heard of the scam where rogue shops rigged up their machines to 'steal' the p.i.n number. I always figured I was safer with my a.t.m card then with my credit card. Obviously not. I'm leaving the cards at home and taking travellers checks.
