Jetseti I agree with you. The strength of the baht has confused me for some time. Lets put it this way, if the UK, or any other western country for that matter, woke up one morning to find the military had taken over and the Prime Minister was in exile, the currency would drop off the scale! This is exactly what happened in Thailand and what happens to the currency, it goes up! F***ing mental!

Some historical rates £ v THB can be found here: http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/exrate/thailand.htm You will see from those stats that it's not that long since the THB was relatively stronger against the GBP - 38 to the GBP in 1994/95. Presumably at that time the THB still had its price set by reference to the dollar (Wanderingsam's post refers). You could probably also explain the position by comparing relative interest rates in the UK, US and LOS. In the UK there is currently an expectation, generally, that rates may go higher and that is keeping the value of the GBP high relative to some other currencies. Perhaps LOS is offering inflated interest rates, relative to other countries, and that is helping to keep the THB strong? It might be an interesting exercise (for someone) to make a comparison of interest rates in the UK, USA and LOS over the last few years and see how that comparison stacks up against the historic exchange rates.

Thai Baht still running strong; as demand for interest and with risk it strong worldwide. 2 yrs 40 baht now 30 baht US dollar. 1000 baht loss per $100, and heck of lot more if buying car or condo or business ventures; 100k plus ! CountryWide Financial mortgage house in the US taking the dump after too risky loans are being defaulted on, along with the risky mortgage backed security hedge funds worldwide not having enough cash flows. Here we go again; Real Estate boom bust with overblown overspeculated world regions. 7 years US lead vs world lags. 1980s saving and loans, Japan crisis 90's, Thailand 97 crash. Correction of interest and principles; watch out for the movin on uppers ! cause resell gonna be a bitch !...... AKA Thai Condos ! hold em ! California leading the world as to overspeculated real estate, bubble gonna get em ! move your hard earned money, pensions funds etc

Shredded,, Thai interest rates have been cut 4 times this year,,, I believe they are now set around 4%,, that is low except compared to japan. Australia now is around 7% and on the rise. I think what we have seen over the last 12-18 months is an over-due correction,, the Baht was way to weak and the US$ way too high. Personally I'm happy getting 28 Baht to the AUD. It was not long ago the AUD was 49cents US,,, now 84 after peaking around 88. It takes time for investment mooves into differenbt countries to take effect, that is happening and the baht will weaken a little over the next 6 months. Mel

It already seems to be - a week or so ago there were 30B to the US$, 60B to the UK£, now there are 31.5 and 63 respectively, according to XE.com. Though maybe that's the baht being volatile, or a short term reaction to the (possibly) short term sub prime US lending panic that's rocked the global financial markets this last week. Who knows? Not me. But here's hoping.

There are a lot of different reasons why a currency changes its value, but one of the main reasons has to do with government intervention in the currency markets. Some governments want a lower currency in order increase exports (which increases jobs at home) and try to manipulate their currency value by having their central bank buy US Dollars and sell their own currency (such as baht). The Thai government (through the central bank) has done this for years. Most likely the current government, either becasuse it has chosen not to, or becasue it does not have the economic ability to do so, is not buying as many US Dollars (and selling baht) as the previous government. So this is one example where a weaker government and/or a weaker economy may have less ability to keep their currency value artificially low. Keep in mind that the value of a currency is not merely based on "percieved value", rather it is based on supply and demand, which can sometimes be artificially manipulated by government run central banks, especially for a thinly traded currency like the baht. Of course there are other reasons for changes in the supply and demand of a currency, such as rapid changes in the amount of foreign investment, etc (which as already mentioned by others is often affected by local interest rates and/or investment oppurtunities in local equity markets). If the level of foreign investment changes, this affects the amount of capital conversion from one currency to another, which changes the supply/demand curve of the currency.

Good econ viewpoints! As worldwide and the US, credit card, mortgage, business debts to many financial institution types have skyrocketed during this last economic expansion; bigger houses, 2nd homes, bigger SUVs, more more more has created riskier type loans to those that have trouble paying them back with thier working incomes. Living Large ! Hollywood celebrity style! Keeping Up with the Jones's! Marketers promote all this! Some folks with high debt to incomes need to fall into the cracks, banks shoulda put a stop to the over greedy and press for chap 11,13 bankruptcys! Last USA Today poll about mortgage debt from econ class, indicated folks making over $250k yearly took on several mortages; summer, winter, working homes; 3 total with risky ARM loans called in 2-4 years were by volume the largest pool with risky debt. This puts a damper on the many that try to borrow when needed even for single home or equity 2nd loan. As capitalism goes, let it fall! Saving and Loans crisis took a few down ! Nothing new under the sun here! markets expand and contract where the biggest income spreads goes; real estate, hedge funds, forex, etf, 401ks, bonds, etc. USA consumes alot but the Income to Debt ratios are getting smaller daily; bros at work alll think they can live large and not save a dime for the future, paycheck to paycheck to payment to another payment for the summerplace and Lexus suv. Watch the 2nd 3rd 4th condo buying bros! and let alone sponserships! Heck the word "mortgage" Google the definition and youll will see how the banks got us tied. Nothing is sure but Death and Taxes, and along the way Mortgages from the banks and bad stocks marketed by the Brokers aka bookies in suits, and you honeys divorce suit!?! nuff said ! me have to be cheap charlie ! 30 baht to the buck!
