Having a local bank account is a real plus. As it is not easy to do this in Bkk, I thought some of you might be interested in opening an account in another country with Bangkok Bank.. It is a little work, but would be well worth it. url to find branches is Bangkok Bank Branch Locator they only have a branch in NYC in the States, but you could probably do everything by mail. I don't know if they will let you keep an account in Baht in the USA, but once you have a relationship with them it should help pave the way for more in the USA.. I like BB as it is big and strong. If you like another bank, look up their website and see if they have international branches .. most big banks do ..

Tried Bangkok Bank, did not like there style. I have an account with Thai Farmers Bank in BKK been using them for 2 years. so far no problems, so I guess it is just a preference on which bank to use.

Hi all, Just saw the postings concerning banks. Have opened several accounts with Bank of Asia. In my experience an extremely well run bank, 'western style' due to Dutch ownership of ABN-AMRO group. Feel always a preferred customer when I arrive, welcomed by the branch manager at entrance. Only appear twice a year to do all necessary buisness and bring rather large amounts of cash without any problems. Some things might take a bit longer, but always pleasant. Can really recommend this bank to all of you. BKK

What is so difficult about opening a bank account in Bangkok? For a while there the BOT had a reg saying that one must have a work permit, but, I was told this has been dispensed with. I have previously had accounts at Bangkok Bank Ltd. and at Thai Farmers Bank. Presently have personal savings account at Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi, which is a very unfriendly place, and I do not recommend it. Plus company accounts elsewhere, and my wife banks at Bangkok Bank. I have good friends in management at Bank of Asia and we plan to set up our corporate e-commerce merchant account there (few banks in Thailand offer this.) Hong Kong & Shanghai Bank is also very good; it is especially good if you set up an offshore corporation and then open an account in HK. Zero tax and essentially impenetrable confidentiality.

CJ, when I moved to Thailand in September, 2000 I was required (by Siam Commercial Bank) to provide my work visa AND a letter from my company stating my annual income. Could just be there rule, or an old rule. I needed to have an account with Siam so that I could get direct deposit of payroll.

Hong Kong & Shanghai Bank, like all non-Thai banks, is not allowed to have branch offices, just one head office in the Kingdom. However they are plugged into the ATM nets. And HKSB has Hexagon online banking worldwide. This is NOT Internet based. Nor is it free, or even cheap. It costs a few hundred US dollars a MONTH. But it is highly secure and if you need it, you can afford it. You dial a local access number and with a username and password you enter the Hexagon system, in the HSBC computer network, and can move your money around. For details, see the HKSB website or call their office and request details. I am not presently a user but I plan to be. BTW, HKSB is not headquartered in HK any more although they are still the largest bank in HK. They are headquaretered in the Carribean, BVI or Bahamas I think, maybe Bermuda. They got out years ago. Their old nickname is of course the Honkers and Shankers.

I believe the Bank of Thailand reg about WP was in effect in 2000, but Sukhumvit Charlie told me he opened a couple of bank accounts since then to hide his filthy lucre and no one asked for a WP. It was/is a silly reg. How about retired people? Can't have a WP if you are on a retirement visa right? So retired people can't open a bank account? Silly shit. As to the requirement for a employer's letter stating salary, more silly shit. The Labor Ministry already has that information as part of the WP application process. In fact there is a minimum that you must declare whether you are actually receiving such a salary or not, presently I believe this is 50,000 baht a month. And tax is due on this amount even if it is fictitious. As I am the head of the office I get to write and sign a lot of such letters on my own behalf. More silly shit, but this is Thailand.

Having made a trip to Thailand, I started to research methods of sending money to both friends and a school that I intend to enroll in. After speaking to my local postal clerk and bank, I was advised to use Western Union or Moneygram. For packages DHL or Fedex both of which charge a rate way above what the post office charges. One suggestion was to open a minium balance new bank account with issuance of ATM card. Send the card to the person you want to send money to by a secure means, ie, Fedex, only activate the card when you know it's in the recepients hands and deposit into the account what you want to be withdrawn by your recepient. ATM's are prevelant is larger cities and the person can only receive cash (in Baht) if there is a balance. You get a statement showing withdrawals indicating that the money arrived. This one time set-up then makes it easier to send money on an on going basis. Another tip if you have to send cash is to include either thin cardboard in the envelope and mark "Do Not Bend - Photographs" in both English and Thai script if possible. Be sure to seal the corners of the envelope flap to prevent viewing of the inside using a soda straw. I have been sending money to Brazil on a regular basis for five years and have never lost a letter. However on two earlier occasions when I sent money merely in a folded sheet of paper with the corners open, the never arrived. I am sure there are other ways, but hope this helps. GOOD LUCK!
