You’ve been out most of the night, toured the bars and the a-go-go and you realize its time to choose your commodity.
You look around wondering if there is any good ones left but deep down you know there even if they are less than perfect you will choose one anyway. You feel the need. You contemplate not having a commodity tonight – but hell this is Thailand. So many – so little time.
You allow your eyes to rove around being careful not to meet any commodities eye unless you feel committed to take one before you are ready
There you spotted it – yes nice – not too old – looks like it’s been around for a while but still everything is where it’s supposed to be.
You smile to yourself – relishing the upcoming negotiations with your commodity. You have heard wild stories about newbies paying crazy prices and also the stories of the old hands that have got there commodity for such a small price it is almost unbelievable. But still they say that the commodity was happy and always greets them like a long lost relative when they see them again.
But no “a fair days work for a fair days pay” is your motto. For sure it’s going be cheaper than back home and more than likely a lot more exciting.
You have a price in mind. One that you feel is not exploiting the commodity but one that you can talk about later and not get the shake of the head form the old hands and mutterings of “driving the price up” and anyway you can always lie about the price.
You approach your commodity and strike up the conversation. You are looking for the friendly face and eyes.
As you expect the price quoted is too high and you smile and continue to talk to the commodity. Friendly and easy – you have time and there is always other commodities around – in fact you can see several now at least as good as the one you are talking to.
That’s one of the great things about Thailand you can walk away from one commodity and straight to another with no problem as long as the first commodity does not loose face.
The negotiations are going well. The commodity has stopped trying to quote you “the standard rate” and is now listening to you. You make some suggestions on the services to be provided and how long the commodity will be needed for. Even make vague promises that the commodity may well be needed in the future
The commodity crumbles and you have your price you want and everyone is smiling.
Good --- time to use the commodity
First all the bullshit – What’s your name – where you come from – how many time in Thailand ect ect. By now you are used to them and answer them automatically with the pre prepared story in you mind. Enough of a story so the commodity does not feel you are a newbie but not so far fetched that you can be caught out in the future.
At last the service starts that you are after
Slow to start but sometimes quickening to the point that you feel may be no return but no your commodity is skilled and knows when to back off. You relax and start to enjoy. Hell your commodity knows what they are doing.
You think about the background of the commodity as it tells you about its family in the north and about its brothers and sister. The commodity tell you that it is only doing this work so others of its family don’t have to and one day wants to get out of the game.
Where is this leading you wonder, looking for cash, explaining the reasons for the job or what. Your sceptical but can’t help feeling a little bit sorry despite your artificially hardened heart.
As the service nears the end you realise that you quite like this this commodity. Thoughts turn to getting a phone number to use the commodity again, perhaps hiring the commodity for a day or 2 to be at your beck and call. No that’s silly there are so many commodities around – you can choose any. But this is nice, your comfortable – feel safe and in friendly hands. What guarantee will you have that the next commodity will be able to supply you with the same things so quickly.
You decide to wait until the next time you need a commodity, see where you are and if there is nothing better give the commodity a call.
But wait if you ask for the commodities phone number that saying you like the commodity and that means you should give a tip.
Tip, Tip what to tip. Too small and you will earn the scorn of the commodity even though you know many do not and only pay the agreed price (but then again perhaps this is why the commodity was available tonight) Tip to much and you will be seen as a easy mark a sucker to be hounded and exploited in the future when ever the commodity sees you again. You know where the commodity hangs out and you like the place, don’t really want to move to another location.
Tip, tip. One good thing about a tip is it gets you out of problems with the old hands – The next time you see the old hinds they will ask you about the price and the service. You can give them the price that you paid and if you get a bad look you can also say “but a gave a big tip” and be accepted back into the fold once more.
You decide that a tip is appropriate just as the service is ending (maybe not the best time to consider this you think to yourself later).
Your feeling good, safe and satisfied with none of the horror stories about other commodities actions happening to you.
You reach for the wallet and pay the agreed price and then pull out another note in the semi darkness – oh no its to big a note – too late the commodity has noticed it. No way out now or both you and your commodity will loose face.
You pass it over and the commodity leaves with a smile.
Wait – Phone number – you forgot the commodities phone number – no problem – you know where to find the commodity again.
Time for sleep and reflection on one of the best Taxi rides and drivers you have come across in Thailand. What a great commodity
