Saturday or Sunday: try the chatuchak market (skytrain to mo chit, then follow the crowd), it's a great all day event. Other days I saw Wat Arun, The Grand Palace, Wat Po (get yourself a great message while here)...go to MBK to people watch and pick up an item or 2. Found Monk's Bowl village, down to 1 small alley now and bought a traditionally crafted alms bowl. Have a suit or 2 made, and maybe some shirts. Get a foot massage, manicure, facial (I recommend May massage on Suk Soi 22). See the large Golden Buddha in Chinatown, and eat some great food while there; 2 bucks US for lunch.
Hang around a park and watch some high school students play that vreally cool version of volleyball where you only use your feet (what is that game called, anyway). Bring a camera and take photos. One of my faves, leave your htoel, walk in a direcyion you have not taken before, and see what the day brings. Found a pretty good restaurant that way.
It is difficult to find yourself bored in Bangkok, there is so much available to you.

Watched some guys playing a game with their feet in PP Cambodia, 8-10 of them formed a wide circle and kicked a feathered ball around (something like a badmington shuttlecock) no one knew if the ball was coming their way it was great to watch for half an hour or so and rest from the sight seeing. The best match was played on a raised stage like a band stand these boys were acrobats, never saw one fall off.
Like you I love to explore the back alleys, look into the tiny workshops and see whats being made, sit down and share some tea with the workers. Though I don't smoke carrying a pack to share works wonders, I often come away with a little gift, a great momento of the trip.
