The origin of the word " farang" has several possibilities the LEAST likely of which is the one you stated.
Its origin COULD have been a shortening of "farang seht" French person.
More likely the word came from the Germanic franks and the arabic word "faranji" meaning European Christian.
It is also worth noting that neighbouring countries have similiar sounding words for European looking ( not dark hair dark eyed) people.
Vietnam "pha-rang", Cambodia " barang".

MG: your elaboration didn't deal at all with the reference to Red Hair. I think that is what wagie was reacting to. Where on earth did that come from? If you got that from your GF it still wouldn't make it correct.
Her being Thai doesn't automatically grant her perfect knowledge of all things Thai. Especially with a word which originated outside her native land.

Skip,, she stated "farang " is a slang word means like ahhhhhh red hair, blue eyes. I have confirmed this several times but,,,,who knows.

Thanks for clearing that up, Mel, sounds as though she's making a nod to their 'all you farang look alike' sense of us. Which personally, I find understandable when it comes to caucasians.
Be careful what you assume about Thai's and their own countries though. Or you might find yourself nearly falling out of your chair, as I did, just last night. While dining with my well educated Thai friend- 50+, western educated, worldly read, multiple country stamps in the passport, etc. I brought up my recent trip to Koh Samui. Imagine my surprise then, when they didn't know where it was located in Thailand. Came as a big shock to say the least.
Same friend, different conversation, gave the origin of farang as a bastardization of the term 'foreign'.

Farang means white foreigner. As a non thai asian i've never been assessed a surcharge in Thailand.
I'm assuming of course,so I could be wrong but Maybe because you ( or other non thai asians can speak thai? and therefore non speaking ones will be taken advantage of. Like I said, Just a guess.

Actually my thai is pretty poor I haven't learned past the basic tourist words yet. I communicate in English nearly all the time.

I remember a "999" holder from about five years ago that was an excellent deep throater. Alas she has moved on and someone new has taken her place.
