TL,

Thanks. So I don't use the lemon itself, only the peel and zest. Got it. Thanks much.

Probably have to do something with the 24 peeled lemons. Too many to throw away...

Well this is just my point about LIMONCELLO at soi 11.
Went there last year and was not overly impressed. It is said that their food and pizzas are so great - and at those prices they sure should be. But it is really mediocre and nothing for the manager to very proud of. If my place I would immdiately improve things.

Today I decided to give them a 2nd chance and it will not happen again. For me it is off the list forever. If a restaurant irritates and annoys you - then of course you should not honor them and their high prices with your business.

Service: Staff is running around everywhere. I counted to at least 20 people and probably there are more. Ridiculous considering how small it is. But it is as usual in Thailand - bad management. Instead of having trained and skilled staff you have a lot of people that really dont know shit about the job. In this country a waiter does not seem to be a job. To be a good waiter and service both the customer and the owner is not something you learn in 10 minutes. It actually takes a while to pick up and generally it is non-existant here. They are not waiters - they are tray carriers. They take the plate from the kitchen and place it on your table with no comment or "bon appetit" or whatever.

At Limoncello they really dont give a f*** about you. Take the order, deliver it to the kitchen and then put in front of you when ready. No personality, no question if you want something extra, no nothing really. They dont even bother to pour from the wine bottle you ordered. I have had better service at the beach!

But of course this is the managements fault! Number of staff means nothing - it is how the perform that counts. And these folks dont.

Food? Well - I like italian. But I am not impressed with the ones in LOS. Ridiculously overpriced all of them and I wonder why?! This place is nothing but a 1-star in Europe. It is not all bad - but it is not good either. I took a soup and it was ok but absolutely nothing more. Could have been an opened tin. They even charged for the additional bread that usually in other places come for free at the table! Such small things really puts my mood down! Because it just shows that you are just a "buy-pay-piss off" customer to them!

The pizza which were supposed to be their best was a joke. Tasteless and had cheese etc floating all over. Looked terrible and I only ate half. Fortunately I eat pizza very seldom - but when I do I want something good. They charged 390 b plus service and vat for this crap - and not only is it a joke - it is even more expensive then back home!

Since service is a pc of s...t at this place you are not asked if you want a cup of coffee or such details. I asked for the check and gave no tip. Promising myself I will never ever return.

I dont like when operators seem to be spoiled with good business and just forget who they are there for: THE CUSTOMER!

This is a eatery factory. No soul, no service, no interest. Go there if you dont care - otherwise in my opinion it is one of the places for ever taken off the list! Just as the shitplace Contrazi next to them.

Gosh, I agree about Limoncello but I have had some good meals, with good service and good wine at Contrazi. Perhaps I am not as discerning as you.

No recession at Gianni. Was there last Friday night and each time a table cleared, another group was seated to take their place. As stated previously, one of the top Italian places in BKK, IMO.

Had a spicy spaghetti with garlic and olive oil which was superb to start. Then had the special slow cooked beef ribs. Meat was excellent and more than enough for one person.

It is not cheap but the quality of food is worth it.

my absolute favourite italien restaurant, which prepares a real authentic ital. cuisine is still "La Opera" at Sukh. soi 39, for years now. The Antipasti buffet is marvelous with Vitello tonnato, carpaccio, fritatta, gamberi and plus much more for a full plate they does charge reasonable, IIRR, of 190 (?) or 290 (?) THB. For a couple of bucks more you get a "all you can eat". As a starter you`ll get from the house a tasty warm bread with two small bowls of Bruschetta & Aioli. Exccellent the "Ossobuco" even you don`t need a knife for the meat, it`s so soft to cleave it by fork. Fantastic the homemade Ravioli filled with duck lever and served with truffle oil or butter, cant remember excactly. For a starter or Antipasti b., main course and a glas of wine (after that I`m always to stucked for dessert) you have to expect to pay arround 1100 - 1400 THB.

... I agree with you about L'Opera... long, a Bangkok tradition in Italian cuisine, and one of the earliest vanguards of farang cuisine.

... you might know that the founder and former owner of L'Opera is Rossano Gennari, a culinary institution in Bangkok... he sold the place some 3-4 years ago, and sought retirement down in Jomtien... the consummate restauranteur, in the old European fashion, he was unhappy in retirement and returned to Bangkok to open Rossano's.

... no non-compete by the new buyers of L'Opera... a bad mistake, as many of L'Opera's faithful now dine at Rossano's.

... if you like L'Opera, you will love Rossano's... traditional Tuscan fare, presented in an authentically reproduced country home... an established wine list, developed over many years with the local importers... light and airy... high ceilings, lots of sunlight... service seldom missteps... moderate price points... all directed under the steadfast presence of the veteran Italian restauranteur, there every day.

... Rossanno's... 167 Sukhumvit Soi 21 (about 300-400 meters up from Sukhumvit on side soi 3, and then about 50 meters into soi 3 off of Asoke)... 02.260.1861.

In fact, the biggest improvement at L'Opera in 20 years was the departure of Signore Rossano... who had become complacent, mostly absent and exceedingly average... coasting on history, as it were. While never great, L'Opera is now very predictable and does an altogether serviceable job of providing no surprises Italian-in-Bangkok fare.

Rossano's current incarnation off Suk 19 is an exercise in egotism... a great deal of money dedicated to creating a faux Italian atmosphere with deli case full of imported cold cuts for show, confused service and tired formula "Italian" as only cynical old timers can do it. For my money there are 15-20 better Italian options in the Suk corridor.

... DF... have you a "DF's Top 10 List" you might share?. maybe differentiating the traditional from the contemporary?

... but first... about your review on Rossano's... "Signore Rossano... who had become complacent, mostly absent and exceedingly average... an exercise in egotism... confused service and tired formula "Italian" as only cynical old timers can do it"

... eee-yow, DF!... a bit harsh... perhaps overly so?. and way personal... he cooks food, DF... jeez, did this guy flick a big Italian booger in your risotto, or what?

... criticize a menu, okay, but I've yet to suffer the foul, bitter taste of a pasta served by a "cynical old timer" out of an "egotistical" kitchen... God forbid when THAT day arrives!... I will then join you!

... by the restaurant reviews posted widely on the Internet, and the consistent traffic Rossano's attracts, I don't think I am stretching at all by endorsing Rossano's.

... there must be SOME reason this "cynical old timer" successfully created, owned and operated two highly popular Italian restaurants over 20+ years... as you point out, there are a lot of VERY good Italian restaurants in this market... a LOT!... and this sector of the market is unforgiving of crap restauranteurs.

... ummm, maybe you know something about this Rossano guy that we don't... throw down, man, let's hear it... and pleeeease, God please, don't out him as a pathological Italian booger flicker!... oh, jeez, I don't think I could handle that, as I've dined on risotto a gazillion times at his restaurants over the years!

(... seriously though, DF, I am truly interested in your list of Italian restaurants)
