Thai food is great and it well deserves the 3rd place in the world,

uh?!? You really mean it or it's mostly a diplomatic move?? I could go on eating mediterranean food day in and day out. And so many mediteranean countries thai's already get quite below the third spot...

Anyway a lots of good info in that place... doubt I'll ever get the time to check out all those spots. thanks for the effort!

About spanish food read somewhre that "La Rioja" opened again in Lang suan but stayed some time in the area and haven't noticed it. Is it still on ? Any other spanish only restaurant in BKK???

ThaidUp,

Thanks for the tip. Funny, never actually been in the Grand Majestic, as I tend to approach Annie's from the Soi 4 side, do the dirty deed, and skidaddle back to Soi 4. Didn't know they did Italian. When back in town, will have to try it, and if not too lazy, mozy down to Pendolasco too, and do a comparison test.

- Balls

Balls... I've done both: Sacz on the ground floor of Grand Majestic is about 100 meters from Annie's, so from the convenience perspective it can't be beat... but personally I would make the extra effort and hike 5 minutes down Soi 2 to Pendalasco. (Note that they run a tuk tuk shuttle to/from Sukhumvit, on call). The food is unremarkable at both venues, but I prefer the cozier easygoing ambience at Pendalasco to the formal, stuffy, high-ceilinged scene at Sacz.... Pen also has outdoor seating for those occasions when weather permits. Pen sticks with the basics (pizza, pastas, a few mains) and does an adequate job, with reasonable value for money, while Sacz aspires to higher end cuisine, and falls much short of the mark. Both have very weak wine lists, so be sure to bring your own unless you intend to drink beer with your meal.

Mr Dave
Again last night went to Duilio's for pizza - Sukhumvit soi 49.
It was okay - but I'm no longer as enthusiastic as after my previous experience there.

Again ordered the contadina salad - warm compote of greenbeans, carrots, potatoes, green peas and tomatoes, sprinkled in herb olive oil.
I normally don't like salads, but this is delicious.
That contadina salad, a bowl of soup and some bread would make a delicious meal.

Again ordered pizza #13 - with salami, ricotta cheese and spinach.
The crust was baked to perfection - light and crispy.
The salami was very, very, thin, and there was little of it.
The ricotta and spinach were also put on with a stingy hand.
Next time I'll select something else.

And we ordeered pasta ala carbonnara: spaghetti with a sauce of cream, parmesan and bacon.
It was un-remarkable and I wouldn't be ordering that again.

I like eating at Duilio's.
The atmosphere is relaxed and almost "homey".
The food arrives quickly.
However, the service was not of the stame standard as previously.
During our entire meal last night, our water glasses were never refilled.
And when it came time to ask for the "check-bin" I had to look around and wait and wait to find a waitress - even though we were the only customers in the outdoor room.
Not a huge problem - after all, this is Thailand - but, still, I'd like a bit more attention.

So, while Duilio's has slipped a few points in my book, I will certainly be going back.

This latest post more accurately describes the service that I have had at Duilio's. Doubtless has something to do with whether the boss is on the premises... but I have experienced only average (classic third world) service at this venue...

Well based upon the following review, not so nice. Calling the police on a bad review now that is poor taste. In a city buggling with Italian places, I think I will give this a pass.

The only restaurant on Sukhumvit Soi 2, this Italian eatery sits a 5 minute walk down the soi. A typical converted house, the interior is decorated with upscale furnishings with nice table settings and table covers with an outside dining area for those wishing to smoke. They have a location in Italy and another in Saigon so we assumed the food would be good.

The restaurant offers 5 set lunch menus, the first is a selection of different pizzas for 240 baht that comes with a soft drink or local beer but the pizzas only cost 175 baht at normal price, so there's not much savings for lunch especially when you compare this to deals like "Duilio's" on Sukhumvit Soi 49 that offers your choice of 36 different pizzas for 99 baht for lunch and the pizza is better.

My date started off with a Pepsi at 65 baht (can't charge much more for a can of Pepsi) while I chose a glass of the house red wine at 130 baht from the choice of 20 red Italian wines & about 8 whites. If you're looking for New World Wine then you're out of luck.

Our meal began with appetizers; my date chose "Prosciutto e Melone", a dish of fair quality Parma Ham accompanied with melon at 350 baht that was not ripe enough to have any taste. I chose the "Bresaola della Valtellina", thinly sliced imported air-dried beef. Unfortunately, even with sprinkled virgin olive oil and a few twist of black pepper the dish was not worth 400 baht so we decided to try a soup and ordered the "Minestrone Pendolasco" but things didn't get any better as the broth was more like water than a good Minestrone. Ok, we were ready to try our main courses to see if our luck could change. We chose the "Filetto al pepe verde"...accompanied by vegetables. The beef was tender but the peppercorn sauce tasted quite plain and at 730 baht it should be very tasty. Next up was the "Zigoiner con patate fritte", which is a Pendolasco special so we assumed it would be exceptional. This dish offers thin sliced marinated beef twisted around a wooden dowel then roasted in the oven. The beef is then eaten similar to corn-on-the-cob. The concept is fun & quite different but luckily it also comes with french fries because there just isn't enough meat to fill the average person or to justify charging 690 baht for the dish. For dessert I had "Lemon Sorbet with VoBKa" and she had the "Titanic", Fiordilatte ice cream with espresso coffee. The restaurant looks lovely as does the food when it arrives, I just wish the food was quality enough to be worth the money they charge.

Just A Note: We were contacted by one of the Pendolasco's owners shortly after our review of their restaurant appeared on our website, about a month before a Bangkok local magazine had given them an extremely poor restaurant review. He demanded that all of the negative comments about Pendolasco's be removed from our website and he threatened to do whatever it takes to remove them, including paying off the local police. Apparently, he kept his word, since one our ex-staff was contacted numerous times by a policeman regarding the situation, obviously a result of him receiving a pay-off to put the pressure on us. Our company has never been bullied by a restaurant owner and because he chose to threaten us in such a manner, we have temporarily left his restaurant pages on-line. We recommend that his efforts be geared more toward making improvements to his restaurant for the benefit of his customers than threatening magazines and free-lance journalist.

Gianni's - Soi Ton Son fabulous dinner again last night for 7 people including some of the usual BTF suspects... TU, FB, Kv. We had Gianni make whatever he pleased and we were all very pleased. 5 assorted appetizers including insalda caprese, pork with tuna sauce, smoked salmon mille fueille, parma ham.

5 pasta dishes followed including risotto, twisted pasta with lamb ragout, linquini with fish and garlic, mostaciolli pomodoro, and a neat little lasgna. We really had plenty of food and couldn't go for dessert but went for the grappa instead!

Two bottles of and very pleasant red that Gianni had chosen and we were rocking.

IMO, it is the top Italian eatery in LOS.
