I wanted to update prices at Toscana... pizza & pastas range about Bt 200 - 300. Was there the other night and 5 outa 7 tables on the ground floor were filled with Italian clients. Chef's name is Luca Marchetti.
Some people would suggest if the natives enjoy the cuisine of a restaurant, it must be decent.

Not really.....it could be that the natives are friends of the owner and by the way, most of the Italians here in BKK are from a low social extradition (talking of class system) and they are used to pasta & tuna 24x7 back in Italy.....
You'll find few Italians here in LOS that are really educated in Italian cusine and guess what, most of'em eat in Italian restaurant just to get a break from the local food, not because they really love the taste of the food......
Let's also not forget that 90% of the Italia restaurants are run by former taxi drivers, factory workers, office clerk and so on....the realy chefs are less than a dozen (besides the ones working in the 5 stars hotels).

oh no, not the class system again 
Personally I find nothing wrong with 'country' food. It's usually more wholesome (correct me if I'm wrong), and less expensive compared to restaurants in the cities, in any country I go to.
(and no, I am not a cheap charlie  )

I am surprised you did not mention one other issue concerning cuisine - north vs. south!

The Italians that frequent Toscana are obviously friends of the owner, and spend most of their time crashing in and out through the front door (desparately in need of repair ) so they can smoke outside. I recommend sitting upstairs....

A short report on Antonio's near Silom Seafood market Suk SOi 31...
Nice atmosphere and attenttive service. Menu has many of the usual items and they also have pizza. Tried excellent salmon carpacio. Very tasty not fishy with a good amount of capers and lemon. Then had Osso Bucco which was a mixed bag - meat was done very nicely but the sauce was not very flavorful. Mashed potatoes on the side were amazingly lacking of flavor.
Owner, Antonio, is from Oz and I believe is related to owner of Scuzzi.
Very nice place and would try again but not for the Osso Buco. A bit pricey compared to others in the neighborhood. Everything seemed to be BT 350 +.

I tried it and didnt think it was too bad either (a bit intimate).
However, I have never been able to persuade myself to go back after this rather damning indictment from our resident Italian food expert.

For the sake of keeping your intimate informants intact, before I try the new restaurant, are there certain ground rules on who could be 'intimately contacted' or not? Don't want (a) crash and burn if I can avoid it or (b) step on a brother's front yard!
