Zanotti's is still my favorite Italian place in BKK. Good staff and great wine selection and food.

Mr Alan
3 reviews based on recent visits:

La Gritta - Soi 19, just off Sukhumvit across from Westin Hotel. Tried the lunch buffet twice. Five course meal (salad bar, soup, meat/veggies, pasta, and desert) for 295++ baht (about 348 baht total). Fairly good, especially for the price. A la carte menu for dinner (I did not try that), and open for breakfast also (American breakfast is 190++ baht).

da Lino - Soi 31 about one block south of Euro Inn, Had lunch there two times. Excellent salad and pizza, and pasta. Closed Mondays.

Govinda - Soi 22 about one block off Sukhumvit (in a plaza on west side of soi). Very good pizza, pasta, and salads. Advertised as vegetarian, but I was able to order meat toppings for my pizza right from the menu.

All 3 of these places deserve more business, especially at lunch time.

I tried Basilico tonight and wasn't too impressed. I walked by here one time and saw the chef from Limoncello inside. I assumed that he must have opened another restaurant due to the success of that place, but someone else said that he left there and went to Basilico.

I ordered a Caesar salad, the "Erotica" pizza (tomato, Italian sausage, salami, onion, capsicum, olive), and a Pepsi. The salad tasted a little off to me. The pizza was SOGGY, and I didn't care much for the toppings. In particular, the Italian sausage was bland and the onions tasted like they had been sauteed or something - they didn't go well with pizza. My Pepsi was so small that I had to order a second one. This is common in Bangkok, but it's a pet peeve of mine.

Naturally, I was comparing this place to Limoncello, which I would give the edge to (although I haven't been there in a long time). It will be a long time before I eat at Basilico again, if I ever do. My bill came to 659 baht, and I just didn't find it worth it.

I would agree with Expat's comments... the quality of both service and food at Basilico have eroded noticeably since it opened, and I don't think it was ever as good as Limoncello. The only similarity is the round copycat menus (which take first prize in the stupidest design category).

The (minority) owner is pompous and obnoxious to his Thai staff so turnover is high, which probably explains the decline.... he's also going to kill someone roaring up and down Suk 33 on his crotch rocket, because he drives it way too fast, though this may not be directly related to quality issues at his restaurant.

The place gets a lot of business, but I think this is more about location than service/food/ambience. If you do patronize the place, something like the pasta carbonara is least risky. And bring your own wine because the list is very weak. Better yet, spend 5 minutes in a taxi and eat at any of the Italian venues on Suk 31.

Sorry, chaps,
did not go through all the posts before.
Just want to make this point:
Had meals last 2 nights in ZANZIBAR, Soi 11
IMHO perfect combination of Italian and Tha menu !
Lived 3 years in Rome/Italy earlier and know something about Italian cuisine. This in ZANZIBAR was good/buono !
And the Thai girls I had with me enjoyed their food.
Not cheap - but value for money allright !

Been to Zanzibar twice and it was very mediocre...at best. Also a bit over priced for the quality of food and service. I'll stick to Zanotti's and the new venzia on Soi 11.

Jeez.... isn't anyone eating Italian?

Vito's on Sawadee (formerly San Remo) is a useful place... certainly better than it's previous incarnation. The menu is simple, leaning to pizza/pasta with the usual soups, antipastos and a couple of mains like lamb. Lunch is "set" only... good value at 190b for soup, salad bar and a choice of pasta plate. Many imported ingredients are on view, some available for puchase (olive oil) and the place is pleasant and uncomplicated with competent service. The owner is "hands on" in both the kitchen and dining room. Ambience is simple "trat" style, with a view of traffic on the Green Route.

The wine "list" is a set of shelves near the entrance where you can select a bottle, but only Italian is on offer... I don't want to sound chauvinistic but I personally like a little more geographical diversity. I had my own bottle (essential backup when dining in Bangkok) and I was not charged corkage.

The ministrone soup was forgettable, the salad "bar" (lettuce, tomatoes and onions with choice of dressings) was just ok... but the pasta was standout... I tried both fettucini and tortellini... both were homemade and well above the local standard. (The pasta plates are "mix and match" with a choice of 4-5 pasta types and the sauce of your choice). The tiramisu was also excellent.

Open for lunch (11am to 3pm) and dinner daily. Parking (limited) on the soi after 8pm... during lunch it's best to access the place by taxi. Good value and excellent pasta.
