Yes Australia, even pre BSE Australia was still exporting some
30 times per head of population more than the United states of Arrogance.
Not bad for the second driest continent of earth!!!
What I said is that current 85% market share is not based on any percieved preference for the taste of Australian beef over US beef.

"30 times per head of population?" WTF does that mean? Are you exporting heads of cattle or heads of people?

Actually, with the low value of the US dollar, US beef would probably be number 1 by a large margin if it were not for the 2003 - 2006 Japanese ban on US beef.

Anyway, this thread about what tastes best, not about how much cattle grazing land each country has. US beef tastes great and is less filling.

Mr Alan, per head of population statistic is merely to get things into perspective,,,,,ahhh Australia small population, America Big. Sorry that is difficult for you.

Gee, I thought you said we where t alking QUALITY but now you talk price,,,ROFLMAO. Please make up your Yanky doodle dandy mind.

Even pre the Americans being caught trying to poison the general population (BSE), Australia still had a greater share of the Japanese market, quality, quality, quality.

Mr Alan,,,now you bring in amount of grazing land,,, WTF has that got to do with it??? I'll admit the USA has MANY times more arable land.

US beef is over rated, over priced and struggling to compete.

expatchuck, EXACTLY what I recently am led to think would have been the better alternative, KONITCHY WAH.

Jumpinjack, I had no idea how excellent the USA was at producing Priks until I started writing here.YES indeed the US seems to have that market cornered.

I have been to 43 countries (facebook helped me figure that out), and I have had beef in most of them (some places like Nepal, I definitively decided not to after seeing the slaughter process). I have had beef in all the countries discussed in this thread.

I have friends also who are in the beef business and with them I have learned som e interesting things.

From what I have tasted and what I have learned from my friends, the things that most help make beef different between major producing countries is what the cattle is fed, and the cut. Feed is easy to understand it will affect taste, but I was surprised about the cut. These friends I mentioned above once gave me several pieces to taste from the same animal (one of theirs), but cut differently (of course some cut like tenderloin are the same everywherw).

Now, when it comes to my personal taste, and thinking about what one can have at a steak restaurant, the beef I like the best is the one I have eaten in Argentina. I have also bought beef at Argentinian butcher shops in the USA that was as good as the one in Argentina -I have no clue if it was imported (I doubt it) or if it was just USA beef, cut the Argentinian way; those who have gone to Argentina or can buy at an Argentinian butchery will know what I mean when I say "vacio" cut.

One thing about Argentinian beef that helps it a lot with taste, is that cattle there grazes what in other countries would be an expensive diet additive.

Second, I would put beef from the USA and closely following Spain.

Now, best bet when traveling are USA style steakhouses. Why? They are all over the world and it is safe to assume that you will get a good steak at any USA style restaurant. Beef at the JW Marriott in Bangkok is similar to the one at Mortonīs in Singapore and so on.

Australian beef? Yes, ok.... but....

So, although I would say I like Argentinian beef better, I end up choosing more often USA beef (or at least USA style beef over Argentinian style beef) as it is easier to find.

Admittedly I have used incorrect wording, as it IS a fact Japan declared war. But perhaps someone, an inquistive person may wonder WHY???
Why? Because the Japanese aggression against China, Korea, Philippines, and other SEA nations where they plundered and raped their way through these countries. In response, the US cut off oil exports to Japan (back when the US was an oil exporting nation). It was US oil, and the US had right to sell it to whomever they please.

If the US did not cut off oil to Japan and they continued their aggression, your mother would have been a "comfort" lady for the Japanese army, as was the fate of millions of other Asian women. Maybe that is why the Australians were such close allies to the US in WWII.

From Beef to allies to thai girls. Mel, take a deep breath the Aussies and the US were and are friends and allies. Thank God for that, the world was in great peril about 60+ years ago and the US was among the main reasons that the Japanese did not occupy your cattlefields.

Regardless, both are great countries with great beef, fat women and are great BECAUSE they make decisions based on national interests first.

No point in arguing with Mel anymore as he waffles more than a politician. He quotes logic in one post and by using this logic he then makes the arguement that Aussie beef is the best because it is the preferred choice by McDonald's. Who said Mel doesn't have a sense of humor?

Mel's love of the Japanese may come from them providing the Wagyu cows to Austrialia in the first place. There is no such beef as Kobe beef, it derives this nickname because it ships from Kobe Japan. It is actually from Wagyu cows.

Now one would think since Aussies raise Wagyu cows they would be able to make a smiliar product as the Japanese produced Tajima beef (aka. Kobe Beef).

Well it could have been done until the Aussie's found out that it reguired feeding the cows a steady diet of beer. They found it impossible to divert any of the beer supplies from the bars to the farms.

Luckily we don't have that problem in the USA and are able to breed and raise Japanese cows in grand old Texas.

Yes, I would like to try it, but I think almost impossible to find in Thailand. The one Argentinean restaurant went out of business here. I would also wonder if the beef that Thailand imported from Argentina would be of good quality.

Do you know of any places that serve Argentinean beef in Thailand?
