Some update on the situation in BKK?
Had a terrible time finding a nice place to dine yesterday, looked in a taxi for "Mes Amis" but still no clear idea where it is? anyone here??
Later on after a depressing walk in Suk 33 (still no idea what special you guys see about the ladies there- same suspicious meat as in Cowboy or Nana- mostly kills the mood to eat there - all western restaurants are looking rather crappy anyway- am I missing something?? ) We took a cab to "Le Moulin de Sommail" hoping to see a bunch of drunken french expats and decent food... A desert... they didn't even bother to turn on the water on the glass wall... only one table was occupied and no owner in sight... anybody knows what went so wrong recently with that place??
Suspect owner was on holliday or too drunk and nobody else can manage the place...didn't see him in "Le Lys" either, which was full... basically no help for our stomach... scared to head to indigo coz of traffic jams and ended up in a half decent looking italian restaurant in LangSuan that hardly tasted that much... might be named Airway... dunno...
So what's the deal today in BKK's french restaurants??
Heard a couple of names I forgot but can't see so many french moving here if we can't dine and wine properly - although for the wine it seems a real tough issue... V9 only a tiny light at the end of the tunnel...

There's always Le Normandie in the Oriental Hotel if you've got the baht. Strictly coat and tie dress code for dinner, but there's a lunch special at around 1000 with more relaxed dress requirements. Best French Restaurant in Asia.
Otherwise, I'd recommend Auberge Dab in the Mercury Tower, near the Intercontinental Hotel. Also have a fixed price lunch special. Nice atmosphere, good service, excellent food. I like the guy who's only job is to sweep the bread crumbs off your table. Talk about specialized labor!

Le Normandie is fantastic, but you have to be comfortable with that sort of dining experience. They aren't tolerant of informal dress or behavior. If you can afford it and don't mind dressing for dinner, then you'll be rewarded with exquisite food.
But for a bistro-type experience in Bangkok, the choosing is rather meager. Any suggestions?

Aie!! Thanks for reminding me about the 1000baht lunch menu in Le Normandie, already read about it a couple of years ago but had completely forgotten... was in The Oriental before yesterday for lunch, couldn't get a table in the seafood buffet and outside was too hot so we crossed over to the Peninsula buffet... quite nice as usual but Normandie didn't even cross my head. On the next trip's program for sure! Seems a bit over the top about the dress code for the evening, we don't even have those rules in paris AFAIK.
Otherwise about the bistrot style places Evil, the closest might be "Le Bouchon" in Patpong 2, has a bunch of inconditionnal followers but I'm not one of them. You might give it a try especialy if you enjoy Patpong's atmosphere, you can eat on small tables or right on the bar for decent prices and OK to soso food.
One place is amazing, "Le Lys" on Lang suan, soi 3 I think, they have a petanque field and french expats come play and drink every friday evening. You can really forget you're in downtown Bangkok and it might be going on on saturday evening as well. Funny mix of expats as well, from very different horizons, they organize barbecues as well, juct check directly with them. Might be the most boring place on earth though if you're not french
Otherwise other than bistrot types you can enjoy french restaurants where you can get food -not wine obviously- for roughly the same price than in good parisian brasseries, but more space and better service in BKK. Ambience is usually relaxed. Indigo and Le Moulin de Sommail have been those I hit pretty regulary during the last year or so.
V9 in Silom Sofitel is leaning towards fusion but still many french dishes and weekly arrivage of french oysters. This plus perhaps the best deal on wine in restaurants in BKK.
I didn't know le Salat (Soi 23) served french food as well, actually had a rather nice experience there and we did hit it on NYE but only the upstairs tables were available, and the setting there is on the cheap side.
Anyway I'm flying back tonight to Paris and will have more than enough opportunities to enjoy french food during the next few weeks... feel like crying and getting the hell back to the Aldo's terrace enjoy their meditteranean food with actually a mediterranean weather while back there it's freezing : (

It was 1000++ or even a tad less, but it might have been more expensive before as I vaguely remember more choice. Anyway a very fair deal. Could feed myself with various seafood and the few prepared dishes were definetely aroy. Inside was full but if you don't mind the 15-30m walk the terrace is very nice, good view on the river area and fresh wind. Will definetely be back there

My favourite French restaurant is Le Banyan on Soi 8 (quite far down on the left). It is a small intimate place in a traditional Thai house complete with its own gardens and car park, run by a couple of French guys, Michel & Bruno. Menu and wine list is impressive, and the price is reasonable (Bt 4,000 for three course a la carte meal for two with cocktails, wine and liqueurs). Service is impeccable, but recommend you make a reservation (02253-5556).
Good place to take your wife/girlfriend, but not for BGs.

I would say it is Viet, not French. It is on soi 23. Yes, I have eaten there.
Of course, all Viet restaurants have some French influence since the French imperialists occupied and brutalized Vietnamese from about 1850 until they were defeated in 1954 at Dien Bien Phu. During the preceeding 100 years, millions of Viets were brutalized and/or murdered, so the they soon learned to adapt the French ways just to survive.

"auberge dab" is superbe IMHO.
crepes&co is lovely, but not really french.
my absolute fav is still "au trou normand" in hk.
how is "philippe's" these days??
there is one at the end of suk doi 8 which is nice. forgot the name, though.
"le bouchon" on patpong 2 is nice too, however the one in phuket is better, me thinks.
