DF,

Thanks for the tip on Des Artistes... I can't stand Bella... why they get the turnover they do, is beyond me.

I also agree with your idea of going with standards to measure up a place. I often use risotto as a measuring stick in Italian restaurants. It is a dish that is easy to make fair or bad but is not so simple to make really good.

i would vote for le bouchon patpong 2 for an unpretentious bistro. meal is 'very good for the price'...& location is 'very handy'. you will need reservation esp. for early evening (opens 7:00). about 3,000 for two with reasonable wine.
for cheap lunch try Vanilla in Paragon, great crepes, even if it is S&P really. surprisingly better than the over-priced thai-hi-so-wanna-be around it.

Beaulieu is really really good. Lunch is a bargain. Terrific wine list. Shitty location.

IMO, Le Beaulieu is still tops. Had a friend from Provence in town several times and he rated the bouilabaise the best he ever had!!

Tried Phillipe but was underwhelmed.

The Big One
I just got back from a stay at Asoke Residence and had a very enjoyable lunch at Le Beaulieu. The weekday three-course set lunch at Baht 495 was magnificent -- and an absolute steal at that price! Very good wine list with a decent choice by the glass. Will be back for sure!

Yes it's about that price for lunch in Normandie, and you get small portions of well prepared dishes with top notch service. Book if you want to make sure to get a table, especially by the river's window. Great deal.

If you are really price concious watch out for the extras, a single one of them or a glass of decent wine can easily double your bill.

Stopped in Le Beaulieu for lunch in the Asoke Residence, which is actually on Soi 19, about a 10 minute walk from Sukhumvit. Quiche Loraine, Beef Lasagne, Chocolate Mousse for desert, with coffee, a bottle of mineral water, and a glass of wine. Check bin came to 960 baht.

Food and wine were really good, service and value fair, ambiance nothing special. I'll definitely dine here again, but still miss Auberge Dab on Ploenchit.
