Glad I amused you. I don't know of any aspect of evolutionary theory which would support the idea that the vast majority of Thais are very very intelligent. After as long as I've been here I know full well that there are plenty of uneducated Thais who are very intelligent; but I knew that "educated does not equal intelligent" before I came here 20 years ago. Oh, and the name is MrJoe.

Smegma Well there goes free speech. Nobody like a smartass or being talked down to but to suggest that we restrict all topics of conversation to the facile and mundane seems to be saying 'these girls are stupid and not even worth the effort of striking up an intelligent conversation'. Intelligence is not necessarily related to education and it is up to the participants of any conversation to find their common interests and topics of conversation. If you were refering to bores in general then TG or not who want's to listen to their BS. There is another category of the many hapless souls who lack the imagination and awareness to comprehend that the average BG leaves school at 15 after a few years of learn by rote educaton and requires a more simplistic communication strategy than the girls in farangland. It takes practice. Frankly, if you're talking about TGF's then cutsie bar talk is gonna wear pretty thin pretty quick and if you're talking about BG's they're being paid for their time so what does it matter what you talk about as long as your're not abusive?

In all honesty, Smeg, I don't know anybody who would dream of talking about all this stuff with a Thai BG in the first place. You'd have to be pretty daft not to realise that a BG's education and interests don't incline her to subjects of this kind. To be frank, Thais in general (let alone BGs) would be very far from my first choice for intellectual conversation. This has nothing to do with native intelligence, obviously. In my experience, some of the BGs are certainly quick-witted, and some of their observations about men, farang manners, the P4P biz & other stuff they know about are often extremely acute. Anyway, do you prefer a BG with brains to one who's as thick as a plank? I'm not sure I care tuppence either way - intelligence comes way down the list of things (not just sex-related things) I'm looking for in a BG.

Damn! Guys, I expected after all this time you already had figured me better in regards to my humor style. I was mostly joking. But there is some truth there. One has to choose well what topic of conversations one can have with different people and when. There is no point on trying to drown all the people all the time with intellectual displays. Smart guys know when to keep their mouth shut (opps! that goes then for me - I must be dumb)

To add my bit of unintellectual observations to this rather surprising post by Smegma, I think what we are all referring to here is not basically "naturally intellectual" abilities of Thais (all people are born equal, it's their culture that shapes them thereafter) but to their unique ability to take a "practical" viewpoint. After having read through numerous posts on diverse topics on this Forum as well as on the Bangkokpost forum, I have gathered that Thais have throughout history demonstrated a unique flexibility to adapt to changing circumstances of their times, all through managing to retain their cultural identity and not letting it get overrun by marauders. It's happening even today, as the country is "overrun" by marauding sex tourists, despite which she has retained her poise and old world charm. So good, that countless among us foreigners have turned into sharp defenders of the Thai country and culture. This is unique. I have seen that Thais do bring a practical approach to their problems. How many countries can boast of this unique institution of BGs and MPs that offer comfort without making you think its that hated 'P' word. I guess it takes an equally wise human from the outside world to admire the Thai way. How many of us measure up ? "Intellectual conversations" of the type conjured by the educated, covering politics, sociology, current affairs, sports, education, hisotry, and so on all depend on how intensive and extensive our education has been. It also is shaped by our cultures. For that matter, language is shaped by culture, as English proves. In a pub, how many strangers from different cultures would meet up at the same table ? In Bangkok, you would find all the whites among themselves, the Japs among themselves, the Asians among themselves. There are surely many "intellectuals" among these different "groups" but why don't they get acquainted with each other the way people from the same cultural background would get acquainted with each other in a foreign land ? I come back to Smeg's original post. It's about having something common to discuss, not just in a common language, but with recognisable references. An American cannot wax eloquent about cottonfields back home with an Asian who reminisces fondly about the hookah his grandfather smoked. Unless both are willing and interested in getting deep into each other's strange backgrounds. How many of us measure up?
