The China Myth is the next Internet Bubble only bigger. I be willing to forecast that half of the companies moving to China now will be out of there in less than two years with less of their Ass.

Interesting statement from nearly a year ago. I agree, but think it will take more than 2 years for the bubble to burst.

While China certainly has a lot of potential, it is mainly their own stupidity, their government's stupidity, and their inability to innovate that will do them in.

Recent new developmnet - China and Chinese companies have decided to develop all of their own technical standards, including for DVD encoding, electrical protocols, etc... Which would essentially isolate their country from the rest of the world - which I consider to be a good thing.

They claim it is to avoid paying licensing fees to foreign companies, but it's really an issue of misplaced pride.

Furthermore, while China is certainly pretty good in manufacturing items they are given specifications for, they entirely lack any and all innovation and inventiveness. Not surprisng, since their culture and their gov't frowns upon that.

This, along with plenty of other problems, will keep China in the backwater, by their own choosing. Yet, 'internet gold rush' indeed, and it will take roughly 5 years for many industries and companies to learn expensive lessons.

hoo, hoo, hold your horses harry.

at first you are right. 86% of all consumer goods are today produced in the greater pearl river delta.

they lack innovation and inventivness?? not anymore. been to china lately?? I rather say, they are overflowing.

their culture frowns upon that?? oh boy, did you ever check what the chinese invented in their documented 3 to 4'000 years?? I agree that emperors and later the government did put a tight lid over their people, but not in recent years.

I agree though that the bubble will burst, if china continues to grow as rapid as they did.

beijing olympics will not help.

Well, we certainly agree on the bubble bursting, and that's when the getting will be good I see China as too fragile a nest to put a lot of eggs into, as it can all change at the whim of a rather unreliable government. One thing I have noticed about the Chinese, is that while they are drive to certain goals, there is very little, if any, follow-up once the goal has been achieved. This seems to be quality shared by Thai culture as well, particularly the government.

This, to me, is not the basis of any sort of good investment - and while goods can certainly be manufactured for less over there than anywhere else, I do not see the massive windfall of '1 billion consumers' that the 'blind-from-greed' west is seeing. Quite the contrary - the goal seems to be to extract as much money from the west based on exploiting our greed, and NOT consuming anything in return.

The efforts at reducing dependencies on foreign patents and licenses are a first step in that direction - and while it will isolate China, it will also make sure that Chinese consumers only buy Chinese products (which is the goal).

It wil just take our 'captains of industry' a few years to figure that out.

The Chinese have invented and innovated a LOT in the past 3-4,000 years, but that was before communism. The present government, even while trying to be openly open-minded to privatization and private enterprise, is a far cry from having created a culture that values true creative thinking, innovation, and imaginative creativity. Sure, they build a lot, and sure, there's lots of manufacturing, but I really haven't seen anything truly creative come out of China.

I'd love to learn that I am wrong, so if you have any examples, please share them - but bear in mind, their space program (the best place to start being innovative) is essentially still based on 50 year old Soyuz technology.

back to the original topic,,,

easy enough to stay on an easy subject with BG/TG if you talk primarily about one thing

Let's talk about sex, baby
Let's talk about you and me
Let's talk about all the good things
And the bad things that may be
Let's talk about sex

Agree here it's not nice to talk down to anyone who hasn't stepped on your toes.

Lot's of imput on this thread.

Intelligent or not?

My experience.....spent a week or so with a 28 year old bg who told me she left school at age of 14. Seemed bright to me. 4'9", I called her Mighty Mouse. Bundle of energy and didn't like people to slow her down when we were walking. Had dinner one night at a nice small restaurant several blocks north of the Big C. Pretty much middle of the block from Beach Road. Anyway, as I said, I thought she was bright. So during our meal I asked her if she knew what centrifical (sp?) force is. As she looked at me she simply moved a small piece of carrot slowly from the center of her plate to the edge of it. f***, without using any words, I can't imagine how a person could convey the concept any better. I'll never forget it.

Leads me to believe it's best not to underestimate others. On the other hand, should we follow Will Rogers advice when he said never underestimate the ignorance of the aveage person.

Goddamn, now I'm really confused.

Maybe she'd decided not to eat that bit of carrot.

Cheers

I can't think of anything ruder than horny men who have to be all brainy and intelligent with their TGs. As my father used to say, if you can't say anything mundane to your girls, don't say anything at all or they may stop sleeping with you. He was right: It's not so nice to be smarter than the poor little things.

Why did you have to say all that stuff about that book you're reading? Would it have been so hard to keep your love of literature to yourself? When you display your intelligence to the Issan girls you're talking to, you're really just telling them that you don't have enough respect for them to keep your smarts to yourself.

Reeling off a list of your favorite jazz artists may make you a good parrot, but it doesn't make you a good lover. Good farang men hold their tongues, knowing they could hurt Issan girl's feelings if they show knowledge their sex partner doesn't have.

I'm sorry to have to set you straight, but most Thai girls don't speak because they want to be educational. They speak because they want to be nice. They have an interest in interacting with men in a non-confrontational manner that doesn't make them feel like dummies.

In other words, they just want to be friendly. What's friendly about bringing up some article about the Mideast crisis you read in The New York Times? Not much, that's for certain. No, it's friendlier to say unchallenging things about the time you ate, and let the girls feel like they know as much as you do.

There's more to life than being well-informed and cultured. There's good graces, good manners, and good old-fashioned horse sense -especially when it comes to knowing when to talk and when to keep your mouth shut. And, let me tell you, you may know something about astronomy, but you could certainly stand to learn a thing or two about politeness in a Thai environment.

Do you think Thai girls want to hear your views on abstract art or the First Amendment? No one wants to hear things they don't already know, because that just makes them feel dumb.

I don't think it's your goal to try to make the girls feel stupid, but you seem to have this fixation with sharing your intelligence with them. That doesn't make any sense to me. Do you know how you sound when you do that? When you say something like "I'm a big Kubrick fan," what the girl hear is, "Look at me! I know things!" And nobody likes to hear that.

I don't know why you want to come off all smart and well-read, anyway. Sure, with your head full of facts, you may seem to have the world at your feet, but if you keep it up, you'll soon have no one to share it with. Smart people are the loneliest people in the world. They don't have anyone to talk to except other smart people, and who wants to join a conversation between two smart people? No one I know.

So, if you want to keep the girlfriends you have and maybe even make some new ones, try being a little less of a know-it-all and a little more of a know-it-some. I mean, would it really kill you to think the capital of Malaysia is Kuala Lumpur? It could only help. Trust me.

Smegito,

Is this true of all farang nationalities or just 'Gringos' ?

If I am watching TV with a TG and a news item comes up and they show interest I will ask them what they think?

With World events my ex-wife (ex-BG & expert on food especially when I paid) always had the comment "IMF !" She used to surprise me sometimes at her grasp of news in Thailand and abroad. She read the Thai popular papers. I don't always think we give them credit for knowing other things than the currency exchange rates ?

If I read your posting again I bet the problem is the 'Way' the farang brings up a subject rather than the subject itself. Statistically Thai girls should be blessed with the same quota of intelligence as any other nation?

They may not have had the educational opportunities - they still have the brains - or not !
