I am extremely curious.. all this talk abt DOWRY, I start to wonder what abt western culture? anything like this? I get the impression "dowry" does not exist in western culture? Perhaps it comes later in smaller packages like "everyday expenses" or "divorce"? I understand in Thailand when a women gets divorced, she gets little or nothing at all?
Yes it seems to me just becoz u are a farang you need to pay more for the dowry. I understand that asian thinks all farang are rich duie to exchange rate, little do they know(and this apply not only to farangs) they spend money like no tommorow and live on credit terms like the institution owes them.  (survey shows that BTW, dun ask me to find that survey, thks)
So it is sad that most asian do not understand, and yes due to "face" they hike up dowry, surely a "farang" can afford that! And most relatives will go "oh" and "aahs" abt their daughter marrying a farang, in regard of the lifestyle they will lead... some twisted reality from watching too much babe-watch..

As said I have no experience with the dowry, but while surfing I have found the following "guideline", 555...! In general, the amounts according to social standing are as follows:
Bar girl, what they should get is about 20,000 to 30,000 Baht ,but they are outside this tradition as they have no social standing in the minds of the Thai
Lower-class up-country girl, 30,000 to 50,000
Middle-class girl, 50,000 to 100,000
Upper middle-class girl, 100,000 to 200,000
Upper-class girl, 200,000 plus
For a girl from a well-established Thai family, 1,000,000 and up

thats odd...i was thinking on the dowry part...the poorer the girl the higher the dowry is going to be but apparently it is not.

Well, there are no absolute rules in relationships, even from a culture/tradition perspective. When the girl is from a well to do family (of course this is relative), often not all of the dowry is kept. It's just for the ceremony. 5,000,000 on the tray, but the bride's family might just keep 100,000 or whatever is in the small change envelope.

The dowry is supposed to be a gift to thank the bride's parents for raising their daughter - which is generally cash - and practically to cover the wedding expenses. The bride's family generally takes responsibility for the wedding ceremony and traditional Thai weddings are apparently expensive. If the girl comes from a good family, i. e. honest, not necessarily rich, a good portion is usually returned to the bride and groom.

Yeh, we of the subject a bit simon - re the dowry, note the post in "NEWS" ... !! re finding a TG/wife, just wander up and down sukhumvit rd, hold a map in one hand, a few $$ in the other, so its apparent you have just arrived ... and stand back - the TGs will find you !

marrying Thais will not knowing pay
anything upfront payment, will all be
back ended!
Those that end up marrying
Thai-Chinese will be less lucky
they will get hit front and back!
