You are younger and therefore not labelled as rich in many respects...she could well just like you and wanna know you more.

When you go visit her family bring a bottle of good whiskey for the father and a present in the 500 to 1K range for her mom. Have a budget and live within in it. I would think 5K plus the presents will cover everything.

Check her father drinks first, it's a bit of a myth in my opinion that they are all drinkers.
The family I visited first, I took a case of beer. a few blokes drank with me. Then all got up and left.
Turned out not one of her brothers or father had ever touched a drop. In fact they were avoiding the drinking and I started off on the wrong foot.

Agree with you completely - definitely should check about alcohol first. My Father in law does not drink but Mom loves my home made brew...lol I carried a few "bomber" bottles for her and her friends to enjoy...big hit - a nice malty strong red ale. Now Mom says teach her how to make beer and wine! Been thinking what a nice mango wine would taste like...

Although it may not be apparent from a lot of the posts here, there are actually Thais who are not all bad. Guarded enthusiasm may be a good way to move forward.
I have been extremely happily married to a wonderful thai girl for 8 years now, never been asked for "sick buffalo" money, never any hidden agenda.
Honest Thais with no hidden agenda do actually exist.

Hi everyone,
I started this topic a long long time ago and haven't responded for such a long time. I tried catching up tonight on all the posts from the last year but wow! so many it will take me a few days to digest it all.
However, here's an update:
My mate is still with the girl and happy although he is still living and working in the UK. However, he got back to Thailand yesterday fior 3 weeks. They now have a son together who will be one year old this month. He has also invested in more land and cows (albeit in her name) and is looking forward one day to settle in the village near Sakon Nakon.
I reckon they might just make it 'LT' (in the real sense).
I will ansa any questions as best I can, to those still interested in this topic as they come in. But let me say this, I am so relieved and pleased that so far this hasn't turned into one of the oh so often scam stories. I suspect that is because my mate is a genuine guy, and has proved this so much to his girl that she probably thanks Buddha by the hour for the life he has changed for her, her daughter (from a Thai relationship) and now their son together.
So have faith those who are fearful of this type of cross-cultural relationship, but want to try it, have courage from this good news to have a go yourselves.
