See below the message from CNN about a muslim-oriented attack. According to this there are 4 muslim provisnces in LOS. Incidentally I was browsing on the forum yesterday and read about LOS's most southern city, Hadyai, which seems to offer quite a lot of P4P.

It begs the question whether this form of entertainment and its establishments can be possible targets in a region influenced by muslims. Comments to Islamism in LOS anyone?:

Thai attackers kill 4, burn schools

War against terror: Southeast Asia front

BANGKOK, Thailand (AP) -- Assailants have set fire to 18 schools and stormed a military camp in southern Thailand, killing four soldiers Sunday, an official has said.

The attacks -- the most daring in months -- occurred in the early morning in various places in the Muslim-dominated province of Narathiwat bordering Malaysia, military spokesman Lt. Gen. Phalangun Krahan said.

No one was hurt in the school fires, some of which still burned eight hours later.

But attackers shot and killed four guards at a military armory in Narathiwat, Phalangun said. The Army Radio said two were shot in the head, the third had his throat slashed and the fourth was beaten.

The assailants fled with 103 assault rifles from the military camp, Phalangun said.

Army spokesman Col. Somkhuan Saengpatranet said about 30 bandits participated in the attacks, but officials have not been able to identify to which group they belong.

The army has ordered a manhunt and requested neighboring Malaysia to seal the border to prevent the group from fleeing the country, the army said.

Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra also called an emergency meeting of top security officials in Bangkok on Sunday.

An Islamic separatist movement thrived in the south for years, but faded in 1984 following an amnesty for insurgents. Violence resumed in 2001 and about 50 police and soldiers have been slain since then.

The government maintains the killings are the work of criminals rather than ideologically motivated extremists.

Police, however, recently increased the reward for information leading to the capture of separatist leaders from $7,500 to $25,000.

Narathiwat is one of the four Muslim dominated provinces of Thailand, which is predominantly Buddhist.

I'm sorry for the families of the dead. I'm also really glad I'm not on the train to Butterworth & Penang any time soon. That train gets shot at far more often than the media tells you even in the best of times.

I think the p4p down there is far more secure than any official institution, like armories and police stations. Most of the customers are Malaysian Muslims anyhow.

I wouldn't expect the guns taken to be used in an uprising anyway. More likely they're on the way to the black market for hard currency or dope.

I am shocked, I tell you, *shocked* to read of Good Muslims™ engaging in illicit sex with dirty creatures, like women... Man, if that isn't cause for a Jihad against those evil westerners, I don't know what is...

So, if this continues, how long do you think it will take for Thailand to literally kick out all of the Muslims?

Just call them drug runners and shoot them, end of problem.
More than likely Thaksin will burry his head in the sand and hope they will go away.
At the next APEC meeting he will stand up and say we had a little problem but "I" have sorted it.

Actually, they seem to have been scared of them for yearrs, they used to hide under tha banner of the 'Communists', they are not all necessarilty Muslims, that tag seems to have been more convenient in recent years, but many of them are not. They've been easy to label with the Terrorist tag, it is essentially what they are.

The South does not vote for Thaksin in any of his political forms, never has, never will. He's not trying to win their votes so he doesn't give a sh_t.

If the mood takes them they may finish them under the 'War On Terrorism' Banner.

Yikes! I'm heading to Penang the end of the month and was inquiring earlier about flying there and you mentioned the train...is it safe to travel to Penang, via air? In your opinion. Heck, the reality of it is that none of us really safe, even in our own countries.

If I remember right, back in 2001 they actually had posters out with the listings of the police department and the reward for the killing of each. Then in early 2002 they got rid of the police chief saying he was not doing an effective job at resolving the problem, then they put in a military general or something. Then they started bombing the trains and schools etc.. It has been rough in that area for years.

Yes the men come over the border from Malaysia for some enternainment. I spent the night there a couple of times when traviling down and back. There is quite a business about 200 yards from the boarder if that far.

103 Assault rifles ! I wonder which type ?

ukguy84 's comment about " I have sorted it" reminds me of an old Soviet joke:
Stalin, Kruschev and Brezhnev were riding together in a train. Suddenly the train stops. After a while and no movement from the train they look at one another. Stalin gets up and goes to the front of the train. After a time he comes back and announces to the other two,"I have shot those responsible!"
The train still does not move.
Kruschev then gets up and proceeds to the front of the train. Later he then returns to declare, " I have rehabilitated those responsible!"
The train still does not move.
After a further period of time and no movement from the train Stalin and Kruschev turn and look at Brezhnev with a look of expectation.
Brezhnev half smiles, pulls down the window blind and says, "We shall pretend the train is moving!"
A good analogy?

Thanks guys for further inputfrom those of you who actually have some experience with travelling the southern tregion about islamism in LOS. I was not aware there was any.

Further to the above there seem to be evidence that also muslims find LOS attractive for planning (and R&R?) :

Thailand: A safe haven for al Qaeda?
From Maria Ressa
CNN Jakarta Bureau Chief
Thursday, December 5, 2002 Posted: 6:20 PM EST (2320 GMT)

JIHAD IN ASIA
A CNN Special Report by Jakarta Bureau Chief Maria Ressa

SPECIAL REPORT
War against terror: Southeast Asia front

(CNN) -- Thailand may be committing the same mistake as Indonesia which long denied the presence of a terror network within its borders, an ongoing CNN investigation has found.

Evidence is mounting that the country has unwittingly been playing a role for terror network operatives in Southeast Asia, and could, at the very least be providing a safe haven for al Qaeda.

When al Qaeda operative Fathur Roman Al-Ghozi was arrested in the Philippines early this year, he was on his way to Thailand.

Based on confidential intelligence documents obtained by CNN, Al-Ghozi told his Filipino interrogators al Qaeda operatives were told to meet in Thailand to avoid a terror crackdown in neighboring Singapore and Malaysia.

Al-Ghozi never made it to that meeting, but another al Qaeda operative did -- Canadian-Kuwaiti Mohammed Mansour Jabarah.

An intelligence report from a western nation confirms Jabarah attended that meeting along with another man, Riduan Isamuddin

.

Also known as Hambali, Riduan Isamuddin is the operations chief for Jemaah Islamiya (JI), al Qaeda's network in the region. Intelligence sources tell CNN Hambali sits on al Qaeda's leadership council.

Westerners targeted
Indonesian authorities have detained and arrested several alleged JI members, some in connection to the October 12 Bali blasts, others for alleged roles in other terrorist attacks in the region. (Alleged terror suspect held)

They say investigations are unraveling the web that is JI's network in the region, its links to al Qaeda, and possible clues in the hunt for the group's leaders.

An FBI document obtained by CNN says it was in Thailand that Hambali announced a "plan to conduct small bombings in bars, cafes or nightclubs frequented by Westerners in Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines and Indonesia."

A CIA document obtained by CNN confirms that "Hambali was located in Thailand and commented that he had one ton of explosives in Indonesia."

Al Qaeda operatives, regional intelligence officials tell CNN, are working with local members in Thailand.

Denial

Thailand says it is keeping a close eye on several people in the country with suspected links to Islamic terrorists

However, Thailand denies the presence of al Qaeda within its borders.

"We have no such evidence that Thailand is the place where they have, they plan terrorism or they have any relation to terrorism," Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra told CNN.

Philippine intelligence reports obtained by CNN show numerous links between armed Muslim groups in Thailand and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), the largest Muslim separatist group in the Philippines.

The MILF ran three al Qaeda training camps, intelligence officials tell CNN, and when the Philippine military captured one of those camps, soldiers found Thai passports.

Recently, Thailand's Supreme Military Commander, Gen. Surayud Chulanont, said he is aware Muslim extremists fled to Thailand following the crackdowns in neighboring nations, but denied they had any links to the Bali bombings.

Yet, according to CNN's investigation, one of the militant groups he named, the Kumpulan Mujahidin Malaysia from Malaysia has been co-opted by al Qaeda and linked to the Bali blasts.

The problem with denial, intelligence officials say, is that -- like in Indonesia -- at worst, it allows the network to flourish.

At best, denial gives al Qaeda a safe haven.
