Not wanting to re-ignite a heavy debate on the bird flu again but I just saw this.

My humble scientific viewpoint is that Asian bird flu not only isnt going away but this strain seems capable of human-human contact...which even at a stretch of the imagination is VERY worrying indeed and not only has implications for thailand but now may have global consequences if Thaksin doesnt get the public health ministrys act together. Enough covering up Thaksin..sort this out before its too late!

Edit: Be aware that the press is also looking for the 'hot' story of the day. Sure it is serious, but the fact remains Sars was over fed by the media. Ludicrous attempts to 'control' SARS in China covered up the reality even more.

Im as real as they come M8 and Im highlighting a need for caution and action by the thai ministry for public health. Just because people arent dying in great numbers now doesnt mean we shouldnt respect the virus. Look at what happened with SARS when the chinese didnt respect the possible consequences of that outbreak.
Im not trying to scaremonger but simply raise awareness as the BBC is. Is it not best to be educated on these matters or live in blind ignorance of them?

Don't worry, since you received a response from Mr. head-in-the-sand, I wouldn't take whatever he said with any modicum of seriousness. I for one found your post informative and thought-provoking.
Regardless of the dangers of human-chicken infection, further outbreaks of bird-flu could also have adverse effects (again) on tourism and the economy - so it is an issue of concern.

Influenza including Avian flu strain has killed more peoples than AID and TB combined. The fear is that this strain could mutate and start to spread from human to human. This is a real fear among the medical community. Again, thanks to power24 to bring the news report to people's attention.

I don't usually get involved in these arguments, but the flu is much easier to catch than AIDS, since you must exchange body fluids with someone to get AIDS or HIV. One can catch the flu (of whatever strain) by just being in the same room with someone infected.

Then yes you are right. However, medical science has upped the learning curve a little since the Black Death.
The fact that the medical world has indicated initial deaths from an original Avian source is light years ahead of waving a crucifix and burning a pile of dead bodies in the town square.

Treatment of influenza is still not very good. We can treat and stabilize more patients now, but with the ever changing mutation, we will never able to catch with the bug. But I do agree with you, that the media's of medical issue is often inconsistent. They are looking for the hot story and often forget about the truth.

Well, there's more reports on this now - with supposedly some cases that hint at cross-species transmission, as well at possibilities of human-human transmission.
While the avian flu is nothing new, it comes along every few generations with differing devastating effects, any further escalations of the avian flu developments in Thailand will have certainly debilitating effects on tourism, if not further economic developments.
While Thailand is getting more press, I'm certain that there may be similar scrutiny within China - except we're not hearing much from there.
So, the way I see it, this thread was started in a timely fashion, and is pretty much on target.
