This sure does not look good and getting worse. Its a huge disaster - worse than the recent floods the US East Coast and Midwest had. I do not know why it does not get more attention from the media here in the USA. It is comparable to the New Orleanes disaster for sure. For live webcam to see Suk (from Landmark) : http://www.landmarkbangkok.com/liveview.html if you see water on Suk here you should not go to your trip.... Other thai live webcams: http://webcamthailand.blogspot.com/ Looks like we will have to cancel the trip this year though I will wait until the last day to do so - still hoping of course. Ap.-

That is because most Americans really do not care what happens outside of their country unless it directly affects them (Eurozone Crisis) or is a ' cause célèbre' (Libya) ...

I doubt this disaster is getting much media coverage anywhere else for that matter. All I can ferret out is from the online community. You are right, Apollo, this is an unprecedented disaster and I wonder if even the Thai authorities saw it that way even 15 days back. The Australian deluge of 2010 comes to mind. If that sort of flood hits Bangkok it will truly be a biblical disaster. My worry is people sitting in Bangkok, looking at the dry streets and wondering what all the fuss is about. Do they imagine that a colossal monster is straining towards them and bunds and levees and barriers can give way any time? Bangkok has canals running right through it and sitting here thousands of miles away I am getting the shivers. I hope my fears are proved utterly unfounded and our favourite destination escapes. If Bangkok does escape, the people will have to pressurise their government to put in place long term measures to mitigate future repeats of such an event. The pity is, of course, that if Bangkok does escape the flood's fury there is going to be no way the sanguine people will realise what they escaped. Aren't governments the same everywhere ?

You are right Kaymanx it seems the thai gov and other agencies and city do not yet get the level of this disaster. While local Thai media may have conflicting reports, the disaster already happened even without flooding Bangkok itself. All around it, people whom work in Bangkok and live outside as its cheaper, their life got affected. The after flood issues, will hit all people there. This is not a tourist destination to go to and keep sanuk while so many got hurt. Yes, food can come back from the unaffected south, and top hotels will do their best to keep going, but this wont be solved quickly for sure. Cannot understand indeed the authorities. Looking at 2 meters only barriers? Common, get there a 5 meter at least. They have money for fancy projects but not to protect all this property and lives as they know it. And mind you, this is still focused on Bangkok center only. What about all those lives around it, the homes and businesses that already are gone? No barrier can help there. The USA too was not prepared for the Cat 5 Katrina in N.O. they designed all barriers for level 3 only... and we are talking about much heigher barriers there than what Thai authorities negotiate now, e.g. raising things by 20 centimeters... or thinking sandbags can replace heavy equipment made strong barriers.... How much suffering is way above the immagination. Why would we travel there as tourists (yes of course we can donate and want to help) in a time like this when almost everyone you will meet has someone or something affected by this? Ap.-

Actually CNN International (both Web and Cable) is having quite a bit of coverage (two stories today) : http://edition.cnn.com I also noticed this week that the Weather Channel has shown some footage of flooding in Ayutthaya. However that being said the live coverage of the trial of Michael Jackson's Doctor was probably getting more attention...
