Yes, that map. But I fear the "predicted" flow of water suggested in the map could pan out a lot worse if the pressure builds up. Then you could have water spreading fast over the banks of the canals and flooding in every which way.
From a tourist's POV, I am thinking : the canal next to Central World overflowing and sending the flood across Chit Lom, Phloen Chit, Nana, Asoke, and a long stretch of Sukhumvit Road. Across Ratchadamri, Silom... back the other way through Pratunam, Petchburi. These are the areas that could experience extensive misery, not only for unprepared tourists but the locals whose livelihood is earned from thousands of small businesses in these popular touristy areas.
There would be no lobby left in most hotels, and therefore no coffee shops, no breakfast, no food. Already Madfrog says, no water. NEP, Cowboy, Patpong, all of Suk and its lively sois and sub sois could turn into a disaster zone, specially when you think of all those creatures that live in Bangkok's gutters coming up to greet you.
What would this do to the hundreds of massage shops, pubs, restaurants, and shops that characterise Bangkok ? How long would they take to come out of this disaster ?

Tops Supermarket at the basement of Robinson (Sukhumvit Road) was fine. There were a few items that were out of stock, that's all.
Apollo, it should be over by November... don't be in the hurry to cancel your trip. Give it a few more days to pan out before deciding.

And imagine how happy the thai will be to have an opportunity to scam the unprepared tourist, selling him a tiny bottle of dirty water for 500 baht...
In normal conditions the Thai try hard to scam us, but remember the Tsunami...you defenetely do NOT want to be in a disaster zone in Thailand...some thai wont think twice before to take your gold tooth using a crowbar (and no I dont mean on your dead body...)

The next few weeks are critical, especially end of Oct with the high water tide. Even if by mid Nov the rain will stop, it will take more than just 2 weeks to get back to routine if the Suk/Silom/Ploenchit areas get flooded, and the major hotels' lobby get contaminated with flood water. We had floods in the USA.. takes quite a while to get back and rebuild. Here they worry about mold and such, and simply rebuild houses that got wet in floods. While such houses are made of wood material mostly, vs. what most Thai buildings are made of, the first few weeks after a major flood as above wont be pretty, maybe not as bad as Madfrog predicts but yes quite bad.
But sure will do all I can as always to support the economy there... Thai bhat may get cheaper even given the economy set back, and the race to get money will be even harder in Thailand. Not good to take advantage of bad luck of others but getting there to support economy is at least we can do if not donate etc.

One of the problems will be that the flooded areas have no place to drain, so you will have "lakes" all around the city waiting for someone with a large pump to empty the :lake"
At the high temperatures of BKK the "lakes" will get pretty nasty quick,
I have already had a couple emails from girls saying that their houses were flooded, I am sure there will be more to come,
When are they opening up the waterways to let them flow ?

While this may discourage visitors, it is better to remember that forewarned is forearmed. I had plans of a November trip myself, but I am filled with dread though I am sure that the flood itself will have gone by then. Some of the biggest dangers come in the aftermath, for example, diseases like gastroenteritis, cholera outbreak, etc. While this may sound alarmist it is best to think about it and plan accordingly, if you are there in the midst of it all.
Imagining the hotel lobby, or the homes of people, flooded is one thing, but what the flood has deposited there will be revealed only after the waters recede. Then we will see metre-high layers of muck and sludge and dead creatures. That is nerve wracking, believe me. If you have a Thai GirlFriend, prepare now to help her cope with the post-flood trauma. Ironically enough, you will have to believe all her tales of dead buffaloes.
How the Thai population is going to come through all this is of great concern. Then the lingering effects on the travel industry in the form of devastated hotels and shopping malls and bars and restaurants and of course livelihoods.
Last year was terrible with the red shirts' "Occupy Bangkok." The Central World worked fast to pick itself up and get back into action and now the floods could well ruin it again. Nature has its own devastation to inflict on humans without humans stupidly adding to their own woes through quarrels and wars, but then this is the way of the world.
Getting into Thailand to help the economy is a noble mission indeed which I imagine all BTF bros will plan on in good time. But we must first let Nature's fury run its course before we begin our repentant missions to rebuild lives and, in the process, reclaim our Thai paradise.

Whatever happens, never underestimate the industriousness and resiliousness of the Thai people. They'll simply put on a bigger smile, roll their sleeves up and get stuck in to restore everything to normal in next to no time.
There'll be nothing like the fiasco at New Orleans, that's for sure. There are plenty of unaffected areas that brothers could visit to help the recovery but don't count on Bangkok being out of bounds for a lengthy time.

Panic grips eastern Bangkok - Fears confirmed of massive amounts of water on the way

Panic gripped residents in eastern Bangkok yesterday after an official announcement confirmed fears that a massive volume of floodwater will be heading their way.
Despite having already taken precautions, yesterday's announcement left many fearing their preparations would not be enough to protect their property from the coming flood.
The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) issued a warning on Wednesday to people in seven districts in eastern Bangkok _ Sai Mai, Klong Sam Wa, Kannayao, Min Buri, Lat Krabang, Bang Khen and Nong Chok _ to take their belongings to higher ground and prepare for possible evacuation.
Shortly after that announcement, roads leading to Watcharapon, Rarm Intra and Kannayao districts were packed with traffic.
Residents in Kannayao and Bang Khen districts rushed to protect their homes after Bangkok Governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra issued a second warning yesterday to people in three tambons of two more districts, Don Muang and Laksi to move belongings to higher floors.
Many people living in these districts had already started making preparations after Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra also announced on Wednesday the scale of the flooding was at crisis level and the government had decided to use the eastern part of the city to drain floodwaters from the northern outskirts.
The BMA's second announcement raised their fears further.
Not only were they moving belongings to high ground yesterday but many people were also trying their best to protect their homes.
Adchara Ongsuwan, 50, said she had no choice but to use anything close at hand, such as rocks and bricks, to build a floodwall to try and prevent water pouring into her house.
Her home is in Chonlada village in Lat Krabang district, one of the seven areas under flood alert.
"I had to take a day off work to prepare for the coming floodwater," she said.
Her housing estate is next to Khlong Huatakhae canal and its entrance is already covered by floodwater.
"Even though I don't think my floodwall will prevent water entering my house, I think building it is better than doing nothing," she said.
She does not feel resentful that the floodwater is being diverted through Lat Krabang to save the city centre. Her house is simply located close to canals and so in the water's path, she said.
Ekkarat Klomkasem, 30, said he keeps inspecting the water level in Khlong Hok Wa and Khlong Phraya Suren canals every day.
With his house in Sai Mai district, he started building a one-metre high dyke around his place and moved his belongings to safer places a month ago.
"I can't be sure that the dyke will keep the run-off out. But I have already done what I can to prevent the flood," he said.
Pornchanit Rachsamee, 52, had already resigned herself to the possibility that her house in Bang Khen would be flooded soon.
"If the whole of Nava Nakorn Industrial Estate can be submerged, Bang Khen will be no exception," she said.
The best she could do under the circumstances is to prepare for anything including evacuation. "I have planned a route and place to go if an evacuation is needed since all my family members are children and women," she said.
Many residents around Rarm Intra Kilometre 8 did not go to work yesterday and instead were making frantic efforts to protect their houses.
Many were even building one-metre high concrete walls in front of their houses and shops.
Sandbags were selling like hot cakes with many people waiting patiently in long lines to buy them.
There were many signs on Liab Klong Song Road bearing the message "sandbags sold here".
"I think wider areas of Bangkok will be flooded and if I see the water level rising, I'll leave for a safer place or maybe go to the provinces," said one resident.

I have no doubt in the resilience of the Thai people to make it through yet another catastrophe.
What I think is criminal, on the other hand, is the Thai government doing absolutely NOTHING, year after year, about perfectly preventable and manageable natural events - which result, every time, in not just untold human costs, but heavy economic losses impacting Thailand directly (how many foreign factories are now shut down, and how many might consider a move to Vietnam or elsewhere, for example?).
In the meantime, the Thai govt (both present and prior administrations) sits on their thumbs and spins, busy doling out LM violations, and bending over backwards to bring Holy Thaksin back.
Seriously disgusting.
